When the 600 molded a champion

I am sure everybody knows the story of 1985 in Charlotte and how my driver, Darrell Waltrip, tracked down Harry Gant and passed him to win the very first Winston All-Star Race which is known today as the Sprint All-Star Race.

Now back then, they ran the first Winston All-Star Race, believe it or not, on Saturday late afternoon after the Busch Series race (now obviously known as the Nationwide Series race). Yet even after a Busch Series race and most of the All-Star Race, we still had not yet hit the big news -- and the controversy. That came after Darrell's engine blew up as he crossed the start/finish line to win the race.

Looking back, I really think all that controversy has overshadowed what happened the next day for the running of the Coca-Cola 600. You see, Darrell Waltrip won that race to complete the sweep, but the story behind the story is Darrell almost didn't even run the race because our team owner Junior Johnson was mad at NASCAR.

It all started during postrace inspection after the All-

NASCAR: Michael Waltrip Returns to Drivers Seat at Talladega

Michael Waltrip may not be NASCAR's best-known owner driver (that honor goes to three-time champ Tony Stewart). But he still manages to get in the spotlight regularly, thanks to an outgoing personality and a willingness to sacrifice dignity for the worthy cause of making interesting commercials for his sponsors. On Sunday, he will make his second Sprint Cup start of the season at Talladega Superspeedway.
A two-time Daytona 500 champion, Waltrip received help for this weekend's race at Talladega from nine-year-old Emery Beavis of Dyerbury, TN, who designed the No.55 Toyota’s paint scheme. Beavis won the grand-prize in the Aaron’s “2012 Color Your Way to Talladega” contest. She and three guests will attend the Aaron’s Dream Weekend in Talladega to watch Waltrip drive her design in Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
Sunday marks Waltrip’s 52nd Cup Series start on the 2.66-mile Alabama track. Waltrip finished ninth in last fall’s race at Talladega and owns a w...

Quotes

Best Memory of Talladega: “As a kid, in 1981, I remember going to Talladega sitting in the grandstands watching my brother (Darrell Waltrip) race. On the final lap Darrell came off turn four racing Terry Labonte for the win. Out of nowhere, Ron Bouchard shot past them and won the race right at the finish line. That was probably one of the coolest races I had ever seen, except that my brother did...

Waltrip returns to race he's won twice

Michael Waltrip will once more be racing at Daytona International Speedway.

Hillman Racing and sponsor Aaron's, Inc., will put two-time Daytona 500 champ Waltrip behind the wheel of the No. 40 Toyota in the Feb. 26 NASCAR Sprint Cup season opener.

Waltrip will be attempting to make his 75th start at the track in one of NASCAR's top three national touring series, the most of any driver.

"Aaron's really does make your dreams come true," Waltrip said. "When I was a kid thinking about racing in Daytona I never dreamed I would start more NASCAR races there than anyone. That's amazing."

Waltrip credits several factors for his success at the track.

"You have to have a great sponsor to race and Aaron's has been a great sponsor for a long time," Waltrip said. "I appreciate what the folks at Hillman Racing, including Joe Falk, are putting together. Hopefully my experience at Daytona will help them get out of the gate strong with their new team."

Waltrip recalls journey of joy to Hall

As with most things, Darrell Waltrip's love of racing started simply.

As a little boy, he'd travel to his local short track with his grandmother to take in the action. She was a diehard fan, one who loved her favorite and reviled all others. Sitting in those stands showed Waltrip a lot about fans -- information that would come in handy in years to come.

Then his eyes caught sight of a go-kart as he traveled his father's Pepsi-Cola route in the summer. When he finally got a chance to drive the gleaming machine, Waltrip felt like a new person. Something altered in that boy a little that day.

What had been a love for racing, one that already had led him to proclaim his plans to be a race-car driver someday, blossomed into an obsession.

Soon, Waltrip commanded a go-kart of his own. Racing and winning sparked a new fire in the Owensboro, Ky., native, a fire that would blaze for the rest of the life.

That would lead him track to track, race to race, first across the South, then across the country a

Waltrip headlines NASCAR's 3rd Hall of Fame class

Darrell Waltrip has made a living from running his mouth, with a trash-talking style that helped him become a NASCAR superstar and led to a second career as a television analyst.

Now the three-time champion is headed into NASCAR's Hall of Fame.

And he's at a loss for words.

Waltrip says he's struggled through 10 versions of a prepared speech for Friday night's induction ceremony. He finally gave up and plans to wing it.

Waltrip is the headliner of the five-member class. He'll be inducted with Cale Yarborough, crew chief Dale Inman, modified driver Richie Evans and NASCAR pioneer Glenn Wood.

It's the third class for NASCAR's Hall, and many believed Waltrip's polarizing personality caused voters to overlook him last year.

Darrell Waltrip loses his freaking mind in V8 Supercar at Bathurst

This is some fun video: Darrell Waltrip, who's allegedly a three-time NASCAR champion but you couldn't prove it here, riding at Bathurst as part of the Bathurst 1000 in Australia. He was on board as a commentator, and oh my heavens, the commentating that was going on here! If you're not a DW fan, this will annoy you but also delight you. Just watch it.
[Hat tip to Rick Tallman and highflyjet for sending along this one.]
