Sky is the limit for Chicago, Delle Donne

In seven disappointing seasons, the Chicago Sky has never reached the WNBA playoffs or even posted a winning record.

But the addition of No. 2 draft pick Elena Delle Donne could be a game changer that helps the Sky finally turn the tide.

Della Donne, an 6-foot, 5-inch All-American from Delaware, brings a scoring touch and versatility for a Sky team that has talent but has lacked consistency.

''I think she's definitely key when you think about her talent, her skill set and her size,'' said Pokey Chatman, the team's third-year coach and general manager. ''Then you talk about the deficiencies we had and she definitely addresses that. And (she's) a player who can swing to multiple positions.''

The Sky are coming off a second straight 14-20 season. After winning seven of their first eight games, they dropped 15 of the next 17 and slipped out of playoff contention.

Delle Donne averaged 26 points and 8.5 rebounds a game, leading Delaware to its first NCAA Sweet 16 app

Fever going after 2nd straight WNBA championship

Tamika Catchings grew accustomed to hearing the annual question.

Can you win a championship?

The ring was the only thing missing from a sterling resume that included three gold medals, five defensive MVPs, seven All-Star appearances and the league's 2011 MVP Award. So when she walked into Bankers Life Fieldhouse last week, Catchings was all smiles. Winning a championship can do that.

''It's a relief,'' the WNBA Finals MVP said. ''Just a lot lifted off your shoulders. All that pressure. Not even pressure, but that feeling of - you already know before you come in, you're already in your mind kind of preparing an answer to the question. `OK, what am I going to say because I know they're going to ask me is this the year?' You try to figure out different ways to say it.''

The question now is whether the Fever can repeat as champs. The Fever open the regular season Friday at San Antonio.

Epiphanny Prince scored 17 points and Courtney Vandersloot added 15 to lead the Chicago Sky to an 85-74 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday night.

Sylvia Fowles, who played sparingly in a loss to Indiana on Saturday due to a leg injury, finished with 14 points and nine rebounds to help the Sky (10-16) win for just the second time in 13 games and pull into a tie with New York for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Swin Cash and Shay Murphy added 13 points and Tamera Young scored 11.

Kristi Toliver had 19 points and Alana Beard added 16 for the Sparks (19-8), who fell three games behind first-place Minnesota in the Western Conference. Candice Parker, who grew up in nearby Naperville, Ill., had 15 points and nine rebounds, and rookie Nneka Ogwumike scored 11 points.

Prince hit a 3-pointer with 1:31 remaining to extend the Sky's lead to 77-66. She made three 3s as Chicago finished 7 for 16 (44 percent) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (32 for 64) from the field overall

Parker, Fowles and Charles potent post trio

Geno Auriemma's eyes light up talking about the talented and versatile post players at his disposal for the Olympics.

Candace Parker, Sylvia Fowles and Tina Charles have dominated the WNBA in the first half of the season, all putting up MVP numbers. Each brings a unique skill set that makes them difficult to guard individually. Together they become a matchup nightmare.

Whether it's the 6-foot-4 Parker's ability to take players off the dribble, the 6-4 Charles' mid-range jumper, or 6-6 Fowles' powerful post moves - they all are multifaceted.

''They are so dynamic in what they can do which makes them so versatile,'' Auriemma said Saturday following a basketball clinic for military families. ''What sets us apart from the rest of the world is that other countries may have one, maybe two really good post players, but we have three to go along with incredibly talented guards.''

Auriemma could potentially play the trio together, which would create matchup probl

Mystics-Sky Preview

The Chicago Sky have never made the playoffs in their six-year history, but if Sylvia Fowles continues her strong play, this may be the year that drought ends.

Coming off another impressive performance, Fowles will try to help the Sky win their eighth straight over the visiting Washington Mystics on Friday night.

In 2011, Fowles had a career year, - averaging 20.0 points and 10.2 rebounds. She was named WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and was a reserve on the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

Still, Chicago missed the playoffs again, finishing fifth in the conference at 14-20.

However, led by Fowles, the Sky (2-1) are off to a promising start, picking up their second road victory Wednesday with a 77-63 win at San Antonio. Fowles finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double, and Epiphanny Prince added 22 points and five steals.

Chicago took advantage of a smaller Silver Stars lineup, getting the ball frequently inside to Fowles, who went 10 of 13 and had four offensive rebounds.

Sylvia Fowles had 23 points and 12 rebounds and helped key a 29-8 first-half run in the Chicago Sky's 69-57 victory over the Washington Mystics on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Epiphanny Prince scored 13 of her 16 points in the first half, and Swin Cash added 14 points in her first game for the Sky.

Crystal Langhorne led the Mystics with 16 points. Monique Currie, who missed all but four games last season because of a knee injury, added 14 points.

Chicago led by 15 points in the first half and 38-25 at halftime, but Washington opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run and pulled to 52-45 on Jasmine Thomas' basket late in the third quarter. The Mystics would get no closer as the Sky opened the fourth quarter on a 14-5 run, capped by Cash's second 3-pointer.

Dating to last season, the Mystics have lost five straight games and 14 of 15.

Both teams struggled to maintain possession. The Mystics committed 23 turnovers - 16 in the first half - that led to 25 points for the Sky. Ch
