Portland Pirates 4, Connecticut Whale 3 (SO)

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, March 5, 2013 - The Portland Pirates made their final appearance at the XL Center for the 2012-2013 regular season Tuesday night, beating the Connecticut Whale 4-3 in a shootout after giving up a late game-tying goal to the Whale’s Brandon Segal. Chris Kreider scored in the first and second periods to keep Connecticut alive after a shaky start.

Head coach Ken Gernander said after the game, “The first (period) wasn’t what it should have been and we lost a point on Portland in the standings, but the team took it upon themselves to right the ship. There was a lot of penalty trouble in the first, enough said there. Kreider is coming, he’s finding his game. (Brandon) Segal, all our big goals, he’s involved and it’s good to see Nick Palmieri contribute on a big one too. Six teams are separated by nine points; all points are critical.”

At 5:59 of the first period, Sean Collins took an interference minor right in front of the scorekeeper’s bo...

Around the Farm: Whale blow 3-0 lead in loss to Portland

Portland Pirates 4, Connecticut Whale 3
Portland, ME, December 31, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale let a 3-0 second-period lead slip away Monday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center, finishing 2012 with a 4-3 loss to the Portland Pirates.
Jordan Szwarz and Ethan Werek scored third-period goals for Portland, after Mathieu Brodeur and Chris Summers tallied in the final 1:20 of the second period to cut the Pirates’ deficit to 3-2.
Werek also had an assist for Portland, and former Whale Chad Johnson made 32 saves for the Pirates. Brandon Segal, Micheal Haley and Tommy Grant scored for the Whale.
The Whale scored the first period’s only goal at 12:37 in a four-on-four situation. After the Pirates had won a draw, Segal knocked Portland defenseman David Rundblad down in the right-wing corner and fed the puck to Marek Hrivik. Johnson stopped Hrivik’s point-blank shot, but Segal, who had headed to the front of the net, shot the rebound underneath Johnson’s right pad and in.

Portland Pirates 2, Connecticut Whale 1

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, November 16, 2012 - Alexandre Bolduc and Chris Brown scored third-period goals for the Portland Pirates Friday night against the Connecticut Whale, and former Whale Chad Johnson made 29 saves, in a 2-1 Portland victory at the XL Center.

Brandon Segal scored the only Whale goal, with only 36 seconds left in the third period, and Johnson’s former stablemate Cam Talbot had 31 saves in the Connecticut net.

It was busy night for the officials, with the Whale having nine power plays and Portland three, but neither team could capitalize on a man advantage.

Play was one-sided early in Portland’s favor, as all the rubber was being fired Talbot’s way.

Even an interference minor to Brown lead to little Whale offense, as Connecticut produced just one shot on the advantage and seemed unable to find the net in the early goings of the first period.

Marek Hrivik was sent off for holding, and moments after the minor expired Portland cranked a sh...

Nashville Heads Home Down 2-0

Nashville Predators 3 vs Phoenix Coyotes 5: Coyotes Lead Series, 2-0Well, the Nashville Predators are going back to Nashville with their tales between their legs. On Wednesday, Game 3 is an absolute must-win if they want to have any chance of coming back. Given that there is a very small chance being down 3-0, the Predators could come back.Tonight, the Predators were absolutely lazy on the puck. They were also very poor defensively, leaving Pekka Rinne out to dry on many of those goals. Barry Trotz fixed the face-off problem, now a new problem has come up, laziness and poor defense. Trotz should skate them like Herb Brooks did to the 1980 US Miracle team. Sunday night's play was a complete disgrace. There is really too many problems with this Predators team right now. I bet if you look at the numerous other Preds blogs, there will be something different.

After a tough loss to the Coyotes Friday night, they were able to take the 1-0 lead in the series. The Pekka Rinne v.s. Mike Smith show didn't go on as planned in Game 1.
Connecticut loses to Portland, mirroring Rangers 4-1 defeat

Portland Pirates 4, Connecticut Whale 1
By Daniel Grosso
Hartford, CT, March 23, 2012 – The Whale were defeated by the Portland Pirates, 4-1, Friday night at the XL Center. Portland winger Brett Sterling netted the winning goal, while goaltender Peter Mannino kept Connecticut guessing all night, saving 29 of 30 shots faced.
Whale goaltender Chad Johnson’s line wasn’t as strong as he has grown accustomed to this last month. Johnson surrendered four goals on 27 Portland shots.
“I feel good, I feel like I’m in good position all the time making good saves and then [the puck] just doesn’t go where you want,” Johnson said. “I try to make a save and put it in a good spot and there’s a guy right there.”
The Whale fell victim to poor puck bounces on the evening, as Portland’s goals were all products of rebounds, turnovers and deflections.

Portland Pirates 4, Connecticut Whale 1

By Daniel Grosso
Hartford, CT, March 23, 2012 - The Whale were defeated by the Portland Pirates, 4-1, Friday night at the XL Center.
“Sometimes when bounces don’t go your way you got to find a way to get through that,” Captain Wade Redden said. “Tonight we didn’t do enough good things to get the win.”

Whale Lose Again, No End In Sight

Portland Pirates 4, Connecticut Whale 2
Portland, ME, January 18, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale’s losing streak stretched to seven games Wednesday night, as they lost a 4-2 decision to the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Connecticut (19-15-2-4, 44 pts.) did maintain first place in the Northeast Division despite the loss, remaining two points ahead of the Albany Devils, who lost 5-4 at home to the Norfolk Admirals.
Four different Pirates scored in the victory for Portland, Andy Miele had two assists, and Justin Pogge made 22 saves. Erik Christensen and Scott Tanski scored the Whale goals, and Kris Newbury assisted on both.
The Whale appeared to get a break only 1:51 into the first period when Alexandre Bolduc, playing his first game of the season after missing Portland’s first 39 games due to injury, got a four-minute butt-ending penalty. Not only did Connecticut not score on the long man-advantage, but they gave up a freak shorthanded goal at 5:23.
