A Camp Letter to Scott Linehan

Dear Coach Linehan,
Well, wheels went up on the charter flight to Wisconsin today, and it is off to another year of summer camp. I know all of us back in St. Louis hope that the change in scenery does the trick; I know a lot of us are disappointed that we won't get the chance to visit you all at camp this summer. I just wanted to write to remind you of a few things you may have forgotten.
Don't treat Steven Jackson with kid gloves:
I know it will be tempting to limit the work seen in the pre-season by #39, but I must remind you that while this protection keeps him healthy going in to the season, it does not fully prepare him for the riggers the season to come will bring. Even the Chargers LT is learning that he may have to play more (as in some) this pre-season to get ready, and you should really think about doing the same thing with SJ. Last year I think his lack of preparation contributed to his difficulties, so maybe it is time to try a different approach. By no means over work him, but a few knocks in the preseason could do him some good.
Make sure everyone on offense gets a chance:
Last season we were told how lucky we were to have gotten offensive weapons like Randy McMichael and Drew Bennett. Now granted, Bennett was hurt for a lot of the year, but now he is coming in healthy and as a freshly minted starter. Don't forget him or McMichael in the weeks to come. Both can be tremendous threats in the red zone, an area that was frustrating at times last year. In order to b effective again, this Rams offense needs to diversify, utilize the weapons you have. And trust Al Saunders, the guy knows a thing or two about running productive offensive units.
Try to find all 5 starters on the o-line ASAP:
One of the biggest challenges to the Rams offense last year was the lack of a consistent blocking core. A lot of that was beyond your control, the injury bug bit hard. But it will be important to pick a group quickly so that they can jell as a unit, as a Rams line hasn't done for a while. Let them get used to playing together, we have some young players with good upsides, lets get them used to lining up next to each other so as to start building good chemistry, I'm sure Marc Bulger would thank you. And while we are on the subject:
Reconnect:
I know last season is behind us, but who could forget the tension that emerged between you and some of your star players. At times Bulger, Tory Holt, and Steven Jackson all expressed their displeasure with the way things were going. Now is your chance to win them all over again. Show them that things are changing; show them a new offense that they can get excited about. If you want to come back to camp next year, you are going to have to make everyone up there come together, it is time for some younger players to step up as real leaders, find some.
We are all excited to hear how things are going up there, write back soon.
Sincerely,
Josh
P.S
I know we are all pumped to see what the new guys can do, Let's hope Donnie Avery can get in soon to be that speedster you and Coach Saunders wanted so badly, the sooner he get's in to the offense, the better!

How will the Rams offense perform in 2008?

One of the most difficult questions to answer as the 2008 NFL season approaches is what will happen with the St. Louis Rams this season? The Rams ranked in the top half of the league in yards of offense for eight straight years until last year when they fell to 24th. Find out what our thoughts are on this offense and what we project for Marc Bulger, Steven Jackson, Torry Holt and Drew Bennett this season.

Fantasy Football Quarterbacks - Second Tier

With training camp approaching, I figured what better time to take a look at the QBs around the league.

We profiled the Big Dogs, now it's time to look at the guys who the other half of your league will be starting.

Second Tier
These aren't the flashy picks that you can walk away from your draft with your head held high because you got one of the game's best gunslingers. That's not to say you can't be proud of you team because you opted to wait until you got better value for your QB slot. In most leagues the QBs will score the most points. That's just the way it is. What's more important than actual points though is point differential. If you get a QB that averages 18 points per week, he's only 2 points per week worse than a 20 point guy. Now if by choosing that 18 point QB (instead of the 20 point QB) you get a Running Back that averages 12 points (instead of an 8 point RB you'd get if you opted for the 20 point QB) then you'd be ahead two points per week. Before I have to break into long division, let's steer away from the mathematics and move onto who the Second Tier QBs are.

Matt Hasselbeck - Matt reminds me a lot of Trent Green from a few years ago. He puts up solid numbers every year, but is never considered a "must-have" QB. He's averaged nearly 24 TD passes per year to 13 INTs the past five years. He's also averaged over 3400 yards during that stretch. His best year came last year when he tossed nearly 4000 yards and 28 TDs (both career highs). With Shaun Alexander out of the picture, I can see Seattle remaining a pass first team.

Marc Bulger - Last year Bulger was a Big Dog. This year he becomes on of the best QB values. The Rams were just a mess last year. Injuries to Bulger and Steven Jackson kept St. Louis from ever getting in a rhythm. I can see them bouncing back in a big way. The beauty of picking Bulger is, even if he misses, you won't be in that bad of shape. I'd probably try and grab another second tier or the best of the third tier QBs shortly after selecting Bulger just to be safe.

Donovan McNabb - McNabb has Big Dog talent, but annual health concerns make drafting the former Syracuse star a risky proposition. He's only played in 75% (48 of 64) of the Eagles' game the past four seasons and 68.75% (33 of 48) the past three. As big of a name as he's been in fantasy circles, he's never reached the 4000 yard plateau and has only suprassed 25 TDs once. Personally, I'm not high on him.

David Garrard - He grew up right before our eyes last year. That run vs. Pittsburgh was an instant classic. He showed great poise last year and an ability to avoid the big mistake. If you're in a league that penalizes for INTs, David's whopping 3 didn't cause much of a dent in your tally.

Eli Manning - A guy who's far too familiar with INTs is Eli Manning. He's thrown 55 in his past three seasons (18.3 per year). However, he's also tossed 71 TDs (23.7 per) in that span while averaging close to 3450 yards per year. Oh, and he won that little game they call the Super Bowl. Manning should be much more relaxed next year now that he's A) stepped out of his brother's shadow and B) given himself some breathing room from New York fans and media.

Philip Rivers - I didn't like the way Rivers mocked and ridiculed Jay Cutler last year, but he has produced back-to-back solid seasons. He's averaged 3270 yards, 21.5 TDs, and 12 INTs while completing over 60% of his passes. He has some great weapons in LT and Antonio Gates, and having a whole offseason to work with Chris Chambers should pay dividends.

Jay Cutler - Speaking of Cutler, he has the potential of having a pretty solid year for the Broncos. The departure of Javon Walker won't be too hard to overcome because of the limited role he played last year. A few things will need to fall in place for Cutler to be counted on for your fantasy team. Brandon Marshall will need to be healthy (mentally and physically) first and foremost. Second, he'll need to get some production out of Darrell Jackson, Keary Colbert, and Brandon Stokley.

Site Has Hasselbeck as a Fantasy Bust in 08

Fantasy site KFFL.com has released their lists of "busts" in the fantasy world for 2008, and on the list is Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck. Here is their breakdown on the Hawks QB:
Hasselbeck's favorite wide receiver, Bobby Engram, 35, is not happy with his contract and is holding out. Wideout Deion Branch (knee) is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and may not be ready for Week 1. Seattle has several young receivers - Ben Obomanu, Logan Payne and Courtney Taylor - who may not be ready to step up. The tight end position could take an early hit with rookie tight end John Carlson as the expected starter. Finally, they have a new backfield after cutting former MVP Shaun Alexander, which could lead to instability. In some drafts this year, Hasselbeck, who was just getting Super Bowl tickets two seasons ago, is going ahead of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. Each of these players could be better selections than Hasselbeck's fifth-round average draft position and be had later in your draft. Hasselbeck is still a weak No. 1 quarterback, and tickets to watch him and the Hawks maybe have a tough 2008 will be easy to come by.
Speaking of grabbing tickets, Seahawks Gab is officially endorsing RazorGator as our recommended resource to grab great seats for all Seattle Seahawks games this season. Get great Seattle Seahawks Tickets through, Razorgator, which can be counted on for over 30 years of service providing Hard-To-Get NFL tickets, Super Bowl tickets and more. There's plenty of reasons why we here at Seahawks Gab have decided to endorse them as the Official Ticket Broker of Seahawks Gab, and now check them out to find out. If you need Seahawks tickets, you can trust RazorGator every time to provide exactly what your looking for.

Rams QBs: All Time

This week, Pro Football Reference published three articles rating QBs for all time. They showed the worst regular season QBs of all time, the best regular season QBs of all time and the best playoff QBs of all time. They ranked the QBs for both career and single season.
First the good news, no St. Louis Rams appeared on the worst QBs list! The Worst QBs:
The QB that appeared on the list for the St. Louis Rams, unsurprisingly, is the fan-favorite: Kurt Warner. Kurt's 1999 season is the 8th best of all time, according to the list. Also, his 2001 season ranks 32nd all time. They also rank Kurt the best QB of each of those two seasons, which is not surprising.
On the strength of these two seasons, Kurt is then ranked as the 18th best QB of all time. Best QBs:
They also rank the playoff QB performances for all-time. Kurt Warner is present as well on this list. He ranks 8th all time for his 1999 playoff run. Warner also ranks 4th all-time for his performance against the Titans in the Super Bowl after the 1999 season. Playoff QBs:
The moral of the story is that we were all spoiled from 1999-2001 with great offensive and QB play. Let's hope Marc Bulger can get himself on the list in 2008 and beyond.

Fantasy Football Notes - St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams suffered through a rough 2007 season as they went 3-13, including a miserable 1-5 in their division. But, unlike most crappy teams, they have a very valid excuse as they suffered through a slew of injuries. Star running back, Steven Jackson, was out with a torn groin muscle for 4 weeks. Quarterback, Marc Bulger, missed 4 weeks with a long-list of nagging injuries. Wide receiver, Torry Holt, started all 16 games, but was clearly affected by his bum knee. Offensive tackle, Orlando Pace, played in just one game, and return specialist, Dante Hall, who played in only 7 games due to a high-ankle sprain, was also missed.

If the Rams can avoid the injury bug to key players, it would not surprise the Bruno Boys to see the team compete for the NFC West title and produce many fantasy football studs in 2008. That is a big if though as Holt, Pace and Bulger are not getting any younger, Hall is just a smidgen of what he used to be with the Chiefs, and Steven Jackson's injury involves a muscle that men just clearly do not enjoy having hurt!

Fbkid's fantasy football top ten quarterbacks

As the NFL becomes more pass oriented, good quarterback play is even more important in fantasy football. If you wait too late to get one during the draft, your team could be in trouble when the season starts as you wouldn't have a consistent player at a position that should get you at least 150 yards and a touchdown a week. Then you would be stuck playing the waiver wire deciding if Brodie Croyle against the Chargers is a better play then Rex Grossman against the Packers. The ten players on this list should all be taken within the first six rounds of the draft and if you don't try and get one of them, your team will be at a big disadvantage by the time the season starts.

1. Tom Brady Patriots: Brady had the best season for a quarterback ever last year as he threw for 50 touchdowns. This year, Brady has all of his weapons returning and should put up very good numbers. But don't get to excited, this year the Patriots will try and find more balance in the running game and teams will be focusing on stopping Brady. If you draft him expecting a repeat performance of last year, you will be disappointed. Expect around 4500 yards and 35 touchdowns.

2. Peyton Manning Colts: If you don't get Brady in your draft, don't be upset if you end up with Manning. Manning is consistent and will always get you 4000 plus yards with 30 touchdowns. Since Manning isn't a first round pick, you can grab a top tier running back in the first round and then Manning in the second. Brady may have the better stats this year, but Manning is sure to make fantasy owners happy considering how tough the AFC South is, he might need to play full games in weeks 16 and 17 which is huge come playoff time. Expect around 4300 yards and 32 touchdowns.

3. Tony Romo Cowboys: Romo showed in his first full season as a starter that he is one of the elite fantasy quarterbacks. He threw 36 touchdowns last year and now with a full year of learning Jason Garrett's offense, Romo should see even more success. The only thing that is concerning is the interception totals as he had 19 last year. But if Romo throws for 4000 yards and 30 touchdowns, fantasy owners won't mind. Expect around 4100 yards and 29 touchdowns.

4. Drew Brees Saints: Brees struggled in the beginning of the year but found his stride in the end as he ended up throwing for 4423 yards and 28 touchdowns. Some are concerned about the 18 interceptions he threw last year. But those kinds of numbers occur when you attempt 652 passes. Brees is one of the most consistent quarterbacks in fantasy football and is a great value in the 3rd or 4th round. Expect around 4300 yards and 27 touchdowns.

5. Ben Roethlisberger Steelers: It's hard to have a better year coming off a season with a career high 32 touchdowns, but Roethlisberger could do just that. Big Ben now has a full year of learning Mike Tomlin's pass oriented offense and with the addition of the 6'4 Limas Sweed, Roethlisberger could throw for even more touchdowns. The only problem is that with the poor offensive line, Big Ben could take a pounding over the course of the year and his stats could start declining in the later part of the season. Expect around 3700 yards and 31 touchdowns.

6. Matt Hasselbeck Seahawks: Hasselbeck is the perfect quarterback for the West Coast offense and should have another great year under Mike Holmgren. Hasselbeck is one of the best values in fantasy football as he always gets you 25 touchdowns and isn't usually picked until the 7th or 8th round. Expect around 3700 yards and 26 touchdowns.

7. Carson Palmer Bengals: With Palmer's abilities and his weapons around him, he is usually a top 5 fantasy quarterback, but when your two main targets want more money that could be trouble. Both Chad Johnson and T.J Houshmandzadeh are both in contract disputes and if they sit out training camp, it could hurt their great chemistry with Palmer. Both Johnson and Houshmandazadeh should be playing week one for the Bengals. But things could get really ugly in Cincy quickly and Palmer's fantasy owners won't be too happy. Expect around 4000 yards and 25 touchdowns.

8. Derek Anderson Browns: Anderson has all the weapons around him to succeed in his first full year as a starter. It will be hard for him to have as good a season as last year, but it can be done. If Anderson cuts down on the interceptions and has as good a season as everyone expects, he should be a top 5 fantasy quarterback next year. Expect around 3900 yards and 27 touchdowns.

9. Jay Cutler Broncos: Cutler has loads of potential and only showed glimpses of it last year as he threw 20 touchdowns. He should breakout in his 2nd year as a starter and he and Brandon Marshall should make fantasy owners happy for years to come. Cutler could be a great value this year as he should be picked around the 8th or 9th round but is one of the top options for a keeper league as he is just starting to show what he can do and he is only 25 years old. Expect around 3600 yards and 24 touchdowns.

10. Marc Bulger Rams: Bulger had a rough year last year but part of that was due to the fact that the Rams offensive line was in shambles. Now the Rams have brought in Al Saunders as offensive coordinator and he made Trent Green one of the best fantasy quarterbacks a few years back. Don't be surprised with the addition of a healthy Steven Jackson, if Saunders can do it with Bulger. Expect around 3400 yards and 22 touchdowns.
