UK's Smith out with injured ankle

Kentucky sophomore quarterback Maxwell Smith is out indefinitely with a torn left ankle ligament that will require surgery.

Smith injured his ankle on the second play of Saturday night's 38-17 loss to South Carolina. He had missed the previous game at Florida with a separated shoulder.

Wildcats coach Joker Phillips said Monday that he will seek a medical hardship for Smith if he cannot return this season.

The Wildcats (1-4, 0-2 Southeastern Conference) will rotate freshmen Jalen Whitlow and Patrick Towles for Saturday's SEC game against No. 20 Mississippi State (4-0, 1-0).

Whitlow relieved Smith and was 12 of 23 passing for 114 yards, running for a touchdown as Kentucky led 17-7 at halftime. He was intercepted twice and sacked six times as the Gamecocks rallied with 31 unanswered points.

Kentucky QB Smith has separated throwing shoulder

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky quarterback Maxwell Smith expects to play with a separated shoulder Saturday night against No. 6 South Carolina.

The sophomore missed Saturday's 38-0 rout at No. 11 Florida with what was described as a bruised right shoulder. Smith was injured during a 32-31 loss to Western Kentucky on Sept. 15.

He threw on Tuesday and practiced handoffs on Wednesday, switching the practice schedule coach Joker Phillips had announced Monday.

Smith told reporters about the shoulder separation after Wednesday's practice and says he's still in pain.

The quarterback says the shoulder is "doing pretty good." Smith says he was going to practice just Wednesday, but decided to throw Tuesday and Thursday.

He hopes to "be ready to go Saturday" when Kentucky (1-3, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) plays at South Carolina (4-0, 1-0).

Kentucky open with 32-14 loss to No. 25 Louisville

Kentucky has a quarterback in Maxwell Smith. That defensive line seen as a strength coming into this season? Well, the Wildcats have plenty of work to do.

Smith threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns Sunday, but the Wildcats couldn't get off the field defensively as No. 25 Louisville beat Kentucky 32-14 in the season opener in taking the Governor's Cup for a second straight year.

The Wildcats allowed Louisville four touchdown drives of 71 yards or longer, including a 99-yarder to open the game.

''We got some things to work on, but we're better than that,'' Kentucky coach Joker Phillips said. ''We have to make Kentucky better before we think about Kent State.''

Kentucky didn't do much offensively to help rest the defense either.

The Wildcats finished with 373 yards total offense with Smith throwing passes to 11 different receivers and finishing with a stinger in his right, throwing elbow he had wrapped in ice after the game. But they stayed on the field only

Kentucky QB Maxwell Smith wears helmet-cam during practice (Video)

Kentucky Wildcats quarterback Maxwell Smith wore a helmet cam during a recent preseason practice session, and the school recently posted some of the video to Youtube.

The video was primarily taken during 7-on-7 drills from a practice where the players wore only helmets and shoulder pads, but seeing the plays unfold from the quarterback's vantage point was extremely cool to watch.

WBN NightCap Maxwell Smith Edition

Excuse Me Sir, Could You Pass the Crow? So Joker Phillips and Kentucky fell to Mississippi State 28-16 last night, putting bowl eligibility into serious doubt. However, the Kentucky spectators are more excited following this game than they have been all season. Reason being that Morgan Newton went down with an early ankle injury and true freshmen Maxwell Smith came in performed admirably. Smith finished the night 26-33 passing for 174 yards with no turnovers. The Kentucky offense was humming along for it’s best FBS performance of the season. So it’s only fair that I eat a little crow, having expressed numerous times that Newton was our best chance to win games. But in my defense, prior to last night Smith was 10-19 passing for 50 yards, 2 INTs, 2 fumbles, & -30 yards rushing. So there wasn’t a lot of evidence that he was ready to help this year. Well last night Maxwell showed he could stay poised and deliver the ball to an open receiver most of the time. He showed a kna
