By the Numbers: Analyzing Northwestern’s Win Over Syracuse

Each Sunday, we’ll analyze Northwestern’s game “by the numbers,” picking out the five most important statistics from the game. Here’s the week one installment.
by Kevin Trahan (@k_trahan) Inside Northwestern.com

4: Combined rushing yards for Treyvon Green and Mike Trumpy
This spring, Northwestern figured it had finally found a solid running game outside of its quarterback, thanks to Treyvon Green and Mike Trumpy. Trumpy was returning from an ACL tear the following season and Green looked much improved after an up-and-down freshman year. However, it was Venric Mark who took over starting duties in fall camp, and Mark had 82 yards in his debut.
Mark is a versatile player who gives NU excellent speed on the edge, but he can’t move the pile and will struggle to run up the middle with this year’s offensive line. Fitzgerald clearly wants to find a power running game, but that can’t happen unless Green or Trumpy steps up. Green had 8 yards, while Trumpy had minus-four. That’s amazing c...

Green expected to be ready for Northwestern opener

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald says running back Treyvon Green is doing well and is expected to be ready for the season opener after a scare at practice last week.

Fitzgerald told reporters Monday at practice in Kenosha, Wis., that Green should be available to play against Syracuse on Sept. 1. That's a big relief considering the scene that unfolded on Friday.

Green took a hit to the chest and stayed down as medical staff tended to him. After about 10 minutes, players and media were cleared from Northwestern's indoor practice facility before Green was taken to the hospital.

Green played in all 13 games and ran for 362 yards as a true freshman last season.

Northwestern RB Treyvon Green injured at practice

Northwestern running back Treyvon Green was released from the hospital after absorbing a hit to the chest and being taken from the field in an ambulance Friday.

The sophomore went down on what looked to be a clean hit by defensive back Ibraheim Campbell and remained on the field while medical staff tended to him. After about 10 minutes, players and media were cleared from the indoor practice facility before Green was taken to the hospital.

Evanston Hospital public relations associate Kelli Spencer said he was treated and released from the facility. The exact nature of the injury was unclear, although school spokesman Paul Kennedy said Green had movement in all four limbs.

It wasn't clear how much time he will miss.

Coach Pat Fitzgerald, who went to the hospital with Green, said in a statement all tests results were negative and that a full recovery was expected.

''I would like to thank our entire athletic training staff for their quick response and care in this situation,'' he added.

Northwestern Wildcats: 2011 Exit Survey

Northwestern came into this year riding a three season bowl streak but had seen their record decline for the past two seasons. On paper, this looked like a chance for the Wildcats to break through in the Big Ten. In the first year of divisional play, Northwestern got a favorable schedule that did not include traditional Big Ten powers Ohio State or Wisconsin. Northwestern would also get three of their toughest games (Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State) at home. Unfortunately for Northwestern, they lost every one of those home games and also lost to Iowa, Illinois and Army as they dropped five straight games after starting 2-0. Northwestern also lost their bowl game so they finished 6-7 on the year which would mean that Northwestern's record had now declined for three straight seasons. We caught up with the Northwestern blog Lake The Posts to get their take on the 2011 season and get a quick look into 2012.

Wildcats hope for bowl bid after loss to MSU

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald felt the pain for his departing seniors as they walked off Ryan Field for a final time. A drizzly day became even more dismal after a 31-17 loss to No. 11 Michigan State in the regular-season finale, a defeat that left the Wildcats hoping for a bowl bid with a 6-6 record.

''We'll have those guys and their families to the house tonight, but I won't console them. I'm not a consoler, that's not my nature,'' Fitzgerald said.

''I can't stand it. It drives me crazy when we don't win and it drives me up a wall. I expect to win and I expect to win everything we do. To not do that six times this year is disappointing. We have a chance for a winning season and a chance to win a bowl game. We'll do everything we can to send these seniors off the right way.''

With the score tied at 3-3 late in the first half, Northwestern was driving when Treyvon Green fumbled after a hit by Max Bullough and Michigan State's Denzel Drone

The Gophers didn't receive many passing grades in last week's blowout against Wisconsin. The grades improved against Northwestern, but Minnesota showed there is still plenty of room for improvement. The running game passed with flying colors, but the other facets of the Gophers' game did not. Here's a look at the report card from Saturday's loss to the Wildcats.Running offense: A
Saturday was perhaps the Gophers' most balanced rushing attack of the season. Quarterback MarQueis Gray and running back Duane Bennett combined for 274 yards on 49 carries. Gray led the way with a game-high 147 yards nearly outrushing the entire Northwestern team on 26 carries and a five-yard touchdown. Several times, Gray was able to take off and run for first downs when the play broke down or when the pocket collapsed. Bennett, meanwhile, had a handful of runs over 10 yards and finished with 127 yards on 23 carries. Passing offense: C-

Northwestern upsets No. 9 Nebraska 28-25

A Nebraska defense that was celebrating those coveted Blackshirts last week walked out of Memorial Stadium red-faced Saturday.

Second-string quarterback Kain Colter ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, all in the second half, as Northwestern upset the ninth-ranked Cornhuskers 28-25.

The Wildcats amassed 468 yards and wore down the Huskers' defense on a 13-play, 66-yard drive late in the game that secured the win.

It was only a week ago that defensive coordinator Carl Pelini waved a Blackshirt over his head in the locker room after a 24-3 win over Michigan State. Two days later he presented the black practice jerseys to the defensive starters and key reserves in a time-honored tradition at Nebraska that dates to the 1960s.

''We take a lot of pride in getting those Blackshirts, and to do what we did today, it's embarrassing,'' safety Austin Cassidy said. ''You're not going to win a lot of games giving up 30 points, or however many points we gave up, and 500 yard
