London Knights (1) vs. Saginaw Spirit (8)

Season Series: 3-1 London Knights
Key Players: Max Domi (Knights), Seth Griffith (Knights), Bo Horvat (Knights), Olli Maatta (Knights), Eric Locke (Spirit), Garret Ross (Spirit), Jimmy Lodge (Spirit)
X-Factors: Goaltenders Anthony Stolarz (Knights) and Jake Paterson (Spirit) could make or break this series for their team.
Preview: Simply looking at the OHL Standings, one would think that the London Knights (50-13-2-3) hold an astronomical advantage over the Saginaw Spirits (32-29-4-3) heading into the opening round of playoff action. However, the Spirit played the Knights hard this season, as two of their three losses were by a single goal to the OHL’s most outstanding team.
The Knights have the playoff experience to make a long run but they remain without their top defender, Scott Harrington (Penguins), due to injury and th...

Subway Super Series: OHL Rosters Stacked

By Brendan Ross (@RossyYoungblood)
Dougie Hamilton will return to represent Team OHL for the 2012 Subway Super Series (Aaron Bell/OHL)
Tuesday afternoon the Canadian Hockey League released the Team Ontario Hockey League roster for the Ontario scheduled dates of the tenth annual Subway Super Series set to take place November 8th in Guelph and November 12th in Sarnia. Thirty-plus standout OHL players were named to the rosters led by the London Knights with four representatives from the reigning OHL Champions including Seth Griffith (Boston Bruins), Scott Harrington (Pittsburgh Penguins), Ryan Rupert (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Max Domi (2013 NHL Draft Eligible). The six-game series pits the Russian junior national team against all-star teams from each of the Canadian Hockey League’s three member leagues – the QMJHL, OHL and WHL.
The Oshawa Generals, Ottawa 67’s and Niagara Ice Dogs are represented well for the Ontario contests with three of their own suiting up to represent the undefe...

Lockout Hinders Best NHL Season in Years?

The 2012-2013 season was supposed to start tonight. Instead, the league is in a labor dispute with the Player's Association which has led to a lockout, and subsequent work stoppage. As a result, the first two weeks of the season, totaling 82 games, has been cancelled. What a shame. After rebuilding a league that was pushed to the brink of extinction in 2006, the owners and players simply cannot find a common ground to get a deal in place and start the season on time. The fans will always come back because the sport, itself, is too entertaining and addicting to become detached. But the level of incompetence by everyone involved in labor negotiations has reached a new level of frustration. Even more frustrating is the shortening -or outright cancellation- of what is potentially the most story-filled season in years. Yes, this season could be more interesting than the 2008-2009 season that saw Sidney Crosby face Alexander Ovechkin for the first time in the playoffs, resultin...

For the time being, no NHL season. Now what?

It’s taking a toll on all of us. Between reading the news everyday about the chasm currently between the NHLPA and the owners, to seeing players leave for the KHL, to watching every day pass where a few months ago you anticipated your favorite NHL team to be gearing up for preseason, its bothersome.
What is our solace? How are we supposed to occupy our time with some 82 games from now till April slipping through our fingers? Now, there’s a chance we could watch some NHL hockey this year. We saw the NBA muscle through an arduous CBA to eventually watch King James finally get some hardware/jewelry. It could happen, it could.
In the meantime there are a few things that hockey fans need to keep in mind. In the first place we need to keep abreast of our favorite players playing across seas. Our own Corey Allen linked up the post with current and former Pens players Malkin and Gonchar talking about the lockout and their involvement in the KHL. That’s the first thing.
The second thing is k...

Musings: On the Rangers’ 2012 draft and other offseason thoughts

On the draft…
My excitement over the selection of Cristoval “Boo” Nieves in the second round of the June draft has been growing steadily. Nieves has always been a great passer and skater; the reports that he was fully engaged and very physical at prospect development camp have only boosted his stock. Nieves is going to the perfect place for his development, the University of Michigan.
Here’s why you can’t really trust what you hear about European prospects. Calle Andersson, the Rangers’ fourth-round selection, has been called both a sublime skater and an awful skater by multiple credible scouting outlets. So which is it? I can’t say, I don’t get to watch much Swedish Elite League hockey, and neither do most scouting services. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m not a fan of the Brady Skjei/Ryan McDonagh comparison. I get it, they’re both great skaters and play defense. But it’s not fair to compare the 28th pick to a guy that is going to be an All-Star in his second fu

The star of the show will be Joe Morrow, the Pens number one pick last year. Morrow could make a run at spot this season with good training camp.

The camp goes from July 10-14. July 14 is open to the public.

Also on the list is Simon Despres, and Scott Harrington.

Have to wonder if those two are names that have come up in trade talks at all.

The newest name on the Penguins possible radar is Bobby Ryan according to Pro Hockey Talk via the Ottawa Sun:

Sources say Ducks GM Bob Murray isn’t sure what he’s going to do with Ryan. The organization wasn’t pleased with public comments he made last month, indicating the best move for both sides is a trade.Sources say the Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning and Senators are amongst a group of teams that will make a pitch for Ryan.
Detroit Red Wings: Exploring the Cupboards

Ryan Sproul rips one of his heavy shots during rookie camp last year.
By Rhys Richards (@RREsq)
The Detroit Red Wings face several potential changes this off-season. While the organization waits for Nicklas Lidstrom’s decision to return and considers signing some players in free agency, Detroit should be comfortable as it assesses its new found depth.
Recently, one of Detroit’s second round picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, defenseman Ryan Sproul was selected as one of six finalists for the Ontario Hockey League Defenseman of the Year. Sproul was selected 55th overall by the Red Wings. He stands 6’3” and carries a rather slight 186 pounds.
While the favorite to win the award is Boston Bruins’ product Dougie Hamilton, who was drafted 9th overall in the same draft, Sproul played extremely well for a mediocre Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and was third in team scoring in only his second season in the OHL.
Hamilton and Sproul are joined by three other 2011 draftees. The other nominees i...
