Coyotes Trick Ducks 5-3

The Ducks put on a good show for their fans in at the Honda Center in the final game of the regular season. However it was not good enough for a win, as they lost to the Coyotes, 5-3.

Anaheim outshot Phoenix 46 - 30, but Jason LaBarbera made sure that most of the pucks stayed out the net, making several amazing saves.

Viktor Fasth did not get nearly as much work, and looked a lot more pedestrian in net. Not a good sign going into the playoffs, but then again, Jonas Hiller is more than happy to start the first series against the Detroit Red Wings.

“I wanted to win," said coach Bruce Boudreau. "I wanted to get a good structured effort, and I think we had breakdowns in a lot of areas. The one thing we did get was effort. The opportunities to score were as many as we’ve had all year. We just didn’t put them in.”

The Ducks had plenty of chances to score early on, but after a barrage of pucks sent LaBarbera's direction proved futile, Phoenix was the first ...

Ducks Make Roster Moves

File this under "no surprise." The Anaheim Ducks sent a whole bunch of young players to their AHL affiliate in Norfolk, a sure sign that there will be no training camp next week. Lockout, here we come. Players sent to Norfolk include Igor Bobkov, Josh Brittain, Mat Clark, Marco Cousineau, Corey Elkins, Emerson Etem, Peter Holland, Matt Kennedy, Ryan Lasch, Brandon McMillan, John Mitchell, Kyle Palmieri, Devante Smith-Pelly, Sami Vatanen and Chris Wagner.John Gibson and Ricard Rakell were assigned to their junior teams.Max Friberg and Tim Heed were sent back to their Swedish junior teams. In addition, Dan Sexton and Jeff Deslauriers were placed on waivers, and cleared, and also joined the TSA lines at the airport to head back to Norfolk. Normally, guys would be in Anaheim preparing for training camp, which was scheduled to start next Friday. At this point, it would take a miracle. Rather than spending time negotiating, compromising, and getting a deal done, more time...

Friberg Signs; Selanne Next?

The Stanley Cup has been presented and so begins the season of signings and rumors of signings. The Ducks signed Max Friberg to a three year entry level contract last week. The contract is a two way contract, paying $70,000 in the AHL and a graduated salary in the NHL. The 19 year old Swedish winger was selected in the fifth round of last year's entry draft.Meanwhile, there are reports out of Finland that Teemu Selanne is going to play one more year. This was reported by TSN.ca, but has not been confirmed by the Ducks organization. Until the Ducks have a contract, anything reported is a rumor, no matter how appealing it may be to Anaheim fans. What is not appealing to Anaheim fans is news that fan favorite, George Parros, is likely to test free agency. Despite having an offer from GM Bob Murray, Parros will likely be up for grabs on July 1. If the Ducks cannot come to an agreement with defenseman, Sheldon Brookbank, he, too, will be taking a dip in the free agent pool.W...

Ducks sign left wing Max Friberg to three-year deal

ANAHEIM, Calif. The Ducks announced Friday that the club has signed left wing Max Friberg to a three-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

Friberg, 19 (112092), led all players at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta with nine goals and ranked tied for second in scoring with 9-2=11 points and a 4 rating in six games. Scoring a tournament-high four goals (4-0=4) in a 9-4 win over Latvia on Dec. 26, Friberg was named to the 2012 World Junior All-Star team after helping lead Sweden to a gold-medal victory. With the honor, Friberg became the first Anaheim draft pick to be named to the tournament All-Star team since Paul Kariya in 1993. Friberg also appeared in 48 games with Timra of the Swedish Elite League last season, scoring 5-5=10 goals with eight penalty minutes (PIM).

A native of Skovde, Sweden, Friberg originally represented Team Sweden at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, NY, scoring 2-0=2 points in six con

WJC Blog: One goal earns Sweden gold

After a dominant Canadian effort that earned them the bronze medal in a 4-0 game over Finland, the curtain rose on a Russia-Sweden gold medal battle. While Russia's semifinal against Canada had been the kind of dramatic game that featured a lot of goals, the gold medal game was the opposite. Surprise starter Andrei Makarov made save after save as the Swedes completely dominated the play. The Russians had some good scoring chances, but were obviously very tired and burnt out after two emotional games against the Czech Republic and Canada."We spent many emotions against the Czechs and Canada and were a bit tired," Russian head coach Valeri Bragin confirmed. It was obvious -- by the end of the second period, the Swedes were outshooting the Russians 39-4, and the Russians registered just one shot on goal in the second period. The Russians outshot the Swedes 12-11 in the third period, but with Makarov's brilliance in net, regulation ended with a 0-0 score. With that, the ...

Good morning hockey fans.

In spite of all of their offensive prowess, the Russians were shutout 1-0 last night as Sweden captured World Junior gold.

With the likes of Max Friberg, Evgeni Kuznetsov and Nail Yakupov in the contest, how many of you would have predicted that score?

Not me, that is for sure.

Meanwhile, Brendan Gallagher, Nathan Beaulieu and Michael Bournival also obtained...

WJC Blog: Russia, Sweden to play for gold

Tuesday's world juniors tournament saw a pair of wild semifinal games to determine the final rounds of competition. After two crazy finishes, Russia and Sweden will square off in Thursday's gold medal game, while Finland and Canada will play for bronze.Finland and Sweden played early in the day Tuesday, resulting in a 3-2 shootout win for the Swedes. The Finns had the early advantage, leading the Swedes 2-0 going into the third period, despite being outshot 34-13 through the first two periods. Finnish goaltender Sami Aittokallio was solid in net, stopping everything that came his way while Alexander Ruuttu and Joel Armia scored on the other end.In the third period, the Swedes got an early power play and William Karlsson took advantage, making the score 2-1 and changing the momentum of the game. With less than two minutes left in regulation, Max Friberg scored to tie the game. Scoreless in overtime, the game had to go to a shootout to determine who would go to the gold medal ...

WJC Semis: Russia Holds Off Canada's Surge, Sweden Downs Finland in Shootout

You couldn't ask for much more out of a wild semifinal round at the 2012 World Junior Championships Tuesday night in Calgary. We were treated to two incredible games pitting bitter rivals against one another that culminated in two incredible finishes that will echo through the memories of international hockey for some time.
After the jump, we'll take you through all the action and set you up for Thursday's Bronze and Gold medal games.

We saw Canada completely fall apart at the seams in front of their home fans, falling behind 6-1 to the Russians before collecting themselves with a third period surge, not unlike the one the Russians used to shock them in the Gold medal game a year ago, only to fall a goal short in a crushing 6-5 defeat.
Despite all the questions surrounding Canadian goaltender Mark Visentin entering the tournament, Scott Wedgewood was the story early on, allowing four goals on just 11 shots through a period and a half, including three to Russian ca...
