All-ACC Football Selections Announced

The All-ACC teams were announced on Monday with a total of nine Tar Heels named to the All-ACC teams including four on the first team.
Giovani Bernard earned the distinction of being named First Team All-ACC at two positions. Bernard was named to the first team as a running back and specialist. The redshirt sophomore finished the season with 1228 yards rushing or 122.8 ypg. That average was 38 ypg better than the next best running back, Clemson's Andre Ellington. Despite his total dominance at the position, Bernard was not a unanimous making first team on 45 of 46 ballots. Bernard also led the league in all-purpose yards with 198.1 ypg, returned two punts for a touchdown and averaged 16.4 yards per return to solidify his selection as first team specialist.
Jonathan Cooper joined Bernard on the first team offense. In addition to first team honors, Cooper received the Jacobs Blocking Trophy given the the ACC's most outstanding blocker as voted on by the league's coaches. And despite this award, Coop

Georgia Tech 68 UNC 50

It is pretty simple. 50 points is enough to win a college football game. It doesn't matter who it is against, that is a sufficient number on the scoreboard to walk away with a victory. Of course that logic assumes a team can make some stops on defense.
The defense doesn't even have to be consistent in that respect just make a stop every so often. In this quite ridiculous 68-50 loss to Georgia Tech, UNC forced exactly two punts on the day. One came in the first quarter and the other when the game was salted away. For rest of the contest Georgia Tech moved the ball at will and got a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half as the cherry on top. There are a variety of words one could use to describe UNC's defensive effort today. Most of them profane, some of them synonyms of "embarrassing" except it never felt like the defense came up short for lack of effort. The defense just isn't good and a failure this immense is on the players, Vic Koenning, Dan Disch or any

The Rundown: North Carolina Tar-Heels

First year head coach Larry Fedora and his North Carolina Tar Heels will come into Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium tomorrow afternoon with a 1-1 record. They opened the season with a 62-0 win over Elon and lost in week two to Wake Forest 27-28 on the road. The Tar-Heels were predicted to finish in first place in the Coastal Division of the ACC by college football guru Phil Steele. The ACC’s preseason media poll had the Heels in third place behind Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. Prior to last week’s loss to Wake Forest, Carolina was sitting right outside of the top 25 and receiving a lot of votes. Louisville is currently a 3-point favorite. Considering the Cards are the home team, the spread is practically a push.
Offense:

So far in 2012, Carolina is averaging 44.5 points and 476 yards per game. Junior quarterback Bryn Renner leads the Carolina offense and is in his second year as a starter. In two games this season, Renner has thrown for 507 yards with four touchdowns and two interce...

Wake Forest 28 UNC 27

There are a couple of prisms through which this game could be viewed. The first Gio Bernard’s absence from the game after he was not comfortable running on his injured knee prior to the game. The other is Bryn Renner and whether or not he suffered a concussion when he attempted to rush for a TD midway through the 2nd quarter. Both of these factors is why, to some extent, this game hardly serves as any sort of a red flag for the program. That and the fact it is only one game and the second in the Larry Fedora era. Not to mention, give Wake Forest credit for bouncing back after a tough game last week and making the necessary plays to win the game.
While the offense wasn’t nearly as crisp as it was last week(not unexpected) UNC did stake out leads of 7-0 and 14-7 with Renner playing well on both scoring drives. The real issue in the first half was the defense which saw Demon Deacon WR Michael Campanaro finding gaps all throughout the Tar Heel secondary. Wake Forest answered both of UNC’s scores but the i

Wake Forest 28, North Carolina 27

Tanner Price scored on a 1-yard sneak with 2:09 left to help Wake Forest rally past North Carolina 28-27 on Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Price threw for a career-high 327 yards for the Demon Deacons (2-0, 1-0), who struggled to generate much offense throughout the second half until the decisive drive. Starting from Wake Forest's own 7-yard line, Price calmly directed an 11-play, 93-yard scoring drive that ended when he pushed his way through the right side of the line for the go-ahead score.

Bryn Renner had two final chances to bring back the Tar Heels (1-1, 0-1), but he threw a fourth-down interception with 1:25 left that let the Demon Deacons melt most of the clock. He got the ball back at his own 1 with 17 seconds and no timeouts, but reached only the 40 before his final desperation heave was knocked away.

While Price was steady in the clutch, his top target - receiver Michael Campanaro - had his way with the Tar Heels' secondary all afternoon. Campanaro finis

Will's UNC Football Preview

Given all of the turmoil surrounding UNC's football team last year, the fact that they won seven games and made a bowl with the school firing Butch Davis a month before the season started and using interim coach Everett Withers (who had no head coaching experience before the season) was pretty impressive. While the Tar Heels won't be eligible for the postseason this year, there is still a lot of optimism that new coach Larry Fedora can lead them to the top of the ACC once again. He definitely has some piece on the roster to help him get there.

Offense
The early season buzz going around the ACC was Bryn Renner. If you want to get technical, Renner completed all of his 23 passes in his first start last year against James Madison. He was 22-23 in that game, and the one incompletion was an interception. In fact, through his first two games, Renner had seven incompletions, and four of them were interceptions. For the season, Renner completed 68% of his passes, 26 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Ren

Fedora's new defense aims to confuse ACC

North Carolinas dramatic transformation from employing a pro-style offense for many years to a spread offense has garnered a great deal of attention along Tobacco Road. But as interesting, and perhaps as significant a change, is UNCs new 4-2-5 attacking defense.

Actually, at times it will be a 3-3-5, a 4-3, and a 3-4. Whats so fascinating is that the Tar Heels can switch schemes without swapping in personnel. And thats the whole point of the change.

New coach Larry Fedora wants his team to attack on both sides of the line of scrimmage. On defense, he wants everyone to swarm to the ball with controlled reckless abandon. Of course, most coaches tell their teams something like that every year, but not all designs are intended to create such chaos.

UNC did plenty of reading and reacting in the past, with gap assignments mushrooming to what the linebackers and even strong safety did. Those responsibilities still apply, but the variance of looks the Heels throw at offenses, and what they do once the ball is s

Coaching change means transition for Heels

North Carolina has a new football coach, its third in as many seasons. The Tar Heels are on NCAA probation, are banned from playing in a bowl game this season, and the reputation of the school and program have been sullied.
Yet, theres excitement inside UNCs locker room. The players wont earn any rings this season, but they are optimistic nonetheless. They believe theres plenty to play for. If nothing else, not having a cloud of uncertainty hanging over their heads is a form of relief.
Oh yeah, no doubt, tight end Eric Ebron said.
Cornerback Tim Scott says its time to move on and this team could set a standard for future Larry Fedora-coached Carolina clubs to live by.
We really are trying to forget about it, Scott said. We know what we have to do and it really has nothing to do with us anymore. We cant go to a bowl game, but at the same time, why cant we try to go undefeated this season and still be who we are?
We cant dwell on the past, we can only better ourselves for the future.

New year, more adjustments for UNC's Renner

Bryn Renner has been forced to deal with something different and unique during each of his four years at North Carolina.

Renner redshirted his first year in Chapel Hill, going through the process of adapting to what he thought at the time was a stable program with a stable coaching staff led by Butch Davis.

In year two, Renner battled for a spot on the depth chart while the NCAA infiltrated the Carolina program, finding all kinds of wrongdoings UNC will pay for over the next few years. Last season, Davis was fired less than a week before fall camp opened, replaced by interim coach Everett Withers, who accepted his next job as an assistant at Ohio State before UNC even played in its bowl game.

And now, after running a pro-style offense for three seasons, Renner is learning a spread offense under new coach Larry Fedora. The two offensive schemes couldn't be more different, so again, Renner is facing a significant challenge. But if you query his teammates about how the junior quarterback has handle the transition, expect a consistent response.

"Bryn was a little shaky in the beginning," tight end Eric Ebron said. "But taking on the leadership role like the leader that he is, he buckled down, got into the playbook way before all of us did, and as he began relaying what he learned in the playbook to how it works on the field be got a lot better."

Renner plays the most important position in the sport, and in a year of such a major transition, how he adapts can set the tone for the entire coming season, which won't include a bowl trip for the Tar Heels, courtesy of those NCAA findings.

But there's plenty to play for, say the baby-blue cavalry, and Renner is leading the charge. He not only wants to fend of challenges for his job by talented redshirt freshman Marquise Williams, but he wants to be the team's pace setter in every respect.

"I try to bring that to every practice, every lift, every team meeting we have," the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Renner said. "I just want to prove to everybody I'm the best quarterback for this team. I try to prove that to everybody every day."

Renner was third in the ACC in passing last season and tops in efficiency. He completed 239 of 350 passing attempts (68.3 percent) for 3,086 yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for a squad that finished 7-6. He's known as a risk taker, and he's also not regarded as the prototype for running the spread.

Williams is more athletic, though Renner's no slouch. His edge in experience will help, and that his father, the coach at East Chapel Hill H.S., has been teaching son the game for years, Renner's ability to absorb copious amounts of football information is also an asset. Oh, and he's pretty good, too.

"His accuracy will improve as he gets more confident with where the ball goes," Fedora said at the end of spring practice. "When you're trying to sit back there and try to figure it out after the snap, that's what makes it tough. That's where you get uneasy with your accuracy. He was very accurate all spring.

"To us, being a decision maker, taking care of the football and putting the ball on a guy are the most important things. You can have the best arm in the world, but if you don't know where to go with it and you can't put it where it needs to go it doesn't matter."

Cornerback Tim Scott should have a pretty good understanding of where Renner is with the offense. He went up against him every day in spring practice.

"We have a new defense and new schemes, so Bryn has to read the defense differently and make quick decisions," Scott said. "He did a really good job reading the defense and making smart passes. I think in time he will just get a lot better."

Renner is focused on himself, but he has to keep a keen eye on his teammates. The Tar Heels are trying to learn how to play what is essentially fast-break football, so timing is going to be much different than before, not just by running quicker plays, but the pace in between offensive snaps.

Originally from Springfield, VA, Renner believes they will make the ultimate difference.

"We need to play faster and get our timing down as a group, the receivers, the QBs, everyone," he said. "It's something we have to work on all summer. We're going to throw five days a week on our own, and I think the reps are going to be good for us."

Spoken like a true leader.
