Holmes arrested following fight

Virginia Tech tailback Michael Holmes is facing a felony malicious wounding charge following a weekend fight in Blacksburg.

Holmes, 19, was arrested after police were called to a fight at about 1:50 a.m. Sunday. He also faces two misdemeanor assault and battery charges as a result of incident, which began as an altercation between two women, Lt. Nathan O'Dell with the Blacksburg Police Department said Monday.

Malicious wounding charges typically result from an assault with a weapon, but can also result from broken bones or severe lacerations, O'Dell said.

One person was taken to the hospital as a result of the fight, but O'Dell declined to reveal the nature of his injuries. Two others were treated at the scene.

Holmes, who is being held without bond at the Montgomery County jail, was to be arraigned Monday. However, Holmes has hired a lawyer, postponing his appearance until Tuesday.

ACC notebook: Hokies search for consistency

Virginia Techs defense underachieved last season. No Hokie will argue that.

So when the unit stood out in last Saturdays spring football game, it only made sense to think they will be much stingier this coming fall. Spring games can fool you that way. And maybe the Hokies defense will be much better this season its certainly talented enough and is exceptionally coached.

But maybe the scrimmage was fools gold because Virginia Techs offense is just as much a mess right now as it was last season when Frank Beamers team slumped to a 7-6 mark, and that was after winning its final three games. At least the numbers from scrimmages and the spring game suggest thats the case.

All stats aside in the game won by the White (second) team, 27-9, the most perplexing and discouraging development of the game was senior quarterback Logan Thomas struggles. After having a difficult season a year ago in which he didnt come close to living up to expectations, Thomas had a poor spring, and in the game Saturday was intercepted t

VaTech RB Michael Holmes(AP Photo)
After Virginia Tech finished up its spring practices, the Hokies running back Michael Holmes was booked into the Montgomery County jail on two counts of simple assault and one count of Malicious wounding, this according to Mike Barber of the Times Dispatch.
The details behind the arrest have not been fully specified but it is said that Holmes was involved in a bar fight, and is being held without bail. Malicious wounding is considered a Class A felony in the state of Virginia, so if he is found guilty of this or any of the other counts it’s unlikely he’ll be suiting up this year.
Virginia Tech has not issued any statements regarding the situation, but according to the athletic department policy Holmes will be suspended until the matter is resolved.
This is a big blow to the team, as a freshman for the Hokies last season, Holmes rushed 70 times for 280 yards and led the team with four touchdowns. He was also considered to be emerging as a back who could start for VT thi

Miami Loss Shows VT Coaches are Asleep at the Wheel

Miami Loss Shows VT Coaches are Asleep at the WheelI’ve written plenty of critical things about the Virginia Tech football team this season, particularly the coaches, and even though last night’s 30-12 loss to Miami made me angry, nothing has made me more enraged than the following quote from head coach Frank Beamer.
“(Coleman’s) packages weren’t called there in the first part of the game. We’d like to get Holmes going, get him back there at the tailback position. Let him get going…”
On its surface, that all seems pretty harmless, but let me provide some context.
Courtesy of CBS Sports
Michael Holmes was supposed to be the starter this year. After weeks of underperforming, the staff named freshman J.C. Coleman the starter two weeks ago.
Then, the team continued to use Holmes, and he continued to be ineffective. Accordingly, this week the coaching staff announced to anyone who would listen that they were paring down the running back rotation, and that Coleman and Tony Gregory would s...

Spunky Austin Peay loses to No. 15 Virginia Tech

Austin Peay knew playing at No. 15 Virginia Tech was a tall order, and somehow the Governors came away feeling good about their performance despite a lopsided final score.

Given little chance of replicating the upset fellow FCS member James Madison handed the Hokies two years ago, the Governors hung around early with some gritty defense before falling prey to that old Virginia Tech tradition: momentum-seizing special teams play.

The Hokies (2-0) had a 46-yard punt return and blocked a punt to set up their first two touchdowns, overcoming a slow start for a 42-7 win Saturday.

''We knew coming in we had to do everything right,'' Austin Peay coach Rick Christophel said. ''When you don't do things right on special teams and you give up some big plays, you're going to have some problems.''

Still, he was happy with the way his team performed on the big stage.

''We really, really played hard,'' Christophel said. ''I told them after the game I was a

Special teams spark Hokies over Austin Peay

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech used two big plays in the punt return game to overcome a lethargic offensive start and the No. 15 Hokies beat Austin Peay 42-7 Saturday.

Kyshoen Jarrett's 46-yard punt return set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Michael Holmes to give the Hokies a 7-0 lead.

Still not clicking on offense, especially in the running game, Virginia Tech (2-0) got a momentum-building punt block by Tony Gregory midway through the second period. Five plays later, Logan Thomas scored on a 1-yard sneak.

A 30-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to Corey Fuller with 26 seconds left in the half made it 21-0, and the rout of an overmatched FCS opponent was on.

Austin Peay (0-2) got its lone score on Terrence Oliver's 10-yard run.

College Fantasy Football: 2012 Impact Redshirt Freshman

Every year, there are a handful of brash youngsters that make an immediate splash on the college football scene. Most will go undrafted in college fantasy football drafts, but become hot waiver wire pickups a few weeks into the season. Here are some potential high impact redshirt freshman you should be keeping on your radar in 2012.

Impact Redshirt Freshman:

1. Michael Holmes, RB, Virginia Tech
The Hokies have produced quite a bit of talent lately at the RB position and Holmes has the look to be next in line. Only a two-star recruit coming out of high school, Holmes has displayed a good amount of ability in practices, and is the frontrunner as of now to replace the departed David Wilson as the starting tailback. Only thing holding Holmes back from becoming a top fantasy pick is the prospects behind him on the depth chart. Freshmen J.C. Coleman and Drew Harris have enough talent to unseat the unproven Holmes.

2. Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State
There sure is no shortag...

Spring Practice Primer: Virginia Tech Hokies

Camp Opens: March 28Spring Game: April 21
At this point, just about the only thing to expect from the Virginia Tech Hokies football program is, well, the expected. It doesn’t matter who they’ve lost on offense or defense, what the schedule looks like, or what other programs are rising or falling in the ACC, the Hokies are going to figure out a way to get at least 10 wins and play in a BCS bowl.
But for all the past success, there are real questions entering spring ball as to whether Frank Beamer and Co. keep it going into 2012. The short answer is yes, if only because it’s Frank Beamer, and it’s Virginia Tech. At the time, questions remain on offense, where essentially everyone must be replaced except for quarterback Logan Thomas, and the defensive secondary is patchwork at best right now too.
Add in Clemson and Florida State hitting their strides in the Atlantic Division, and one has to wonder: Is this finally the year Virginia Tech takes a step back?
