Opening Practice and Speculation

First day of practice out of the way. First open session with the media for a few weeks. If you expected anything concrete, you are delusional.
Spring practice is the ultimate mirage. The illusion of football, especially for the starved fans. On the bright side, it’s about a month of fluffy content that isn’t centered on the decisionmaking process of 16-17 year-old boys.
It’s been two months since the last time they played. Motivation, conditioning, recovery from injury or just the season as a whole will vary. A kid who redshirted last year is more energized and has a lot less to recover from during the down time than the junior who went through all 13 games.
What we see. What we think we know. Don’t get caught up in the little stuff. This is broader picture. Who has recovered from what injury, or how much longer will they need. A rough outline of the depth chart. To whom the coaches will need to send a message about the summer conditioning and fall training camp. Who they need to ride herd on to stay

ACC Football Welcomes Pitt Nicely

Actually, “nicely” is understating it. The schedule the ACC put out there for Pitt is outstanding.
2013 ACC Home Opponents
Florida State
Miami
North Carolina
Virginia
2013 ACC Away Opponents
Duke
Georgia Tech
Syracuse
Virginia Tech
Couple that with home non-con games that include New Mexico and Notre Dame, and Pitt has a schedule that includes two top-10 teams from this season. Not to mention Miami and even UNC. I have no idea what to expect from Virginia.

The response on twitter and the ticket office have been overwhelmingly positive. Players, fans, alumni everyone is excited.
#Pitt fans, we hear you! You’ve bought 1,000 tickets in the 90 minutes since the #PittACC schedule was released! #HailToPitt!

Wrapping up the spring

Jumping right into it:
Sophomore Isaac Bennett was the story of the game, as he was all spring (via the Trib):

Tailback Isaac Bennett put an exclamation point on his spring with another sparkling effort in the Pitt spring game. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder carried 23 times for 121 yards, including a cutback 51-yarder. He also had a pair of 70-yard touchdown runs and a 50-yard score during the Panthers' 15 spring practices.
"Isaac worked this spring," coach Paul Chryst said. "He's young, and I think he had a chance to learn a lot and grow. The last three or four times we've gone pretty hard, he's done some things that have been good."
With all-Big East runner Graham recovering from early November ACL surgery and five-star recruit Shell on the way, Bennett is making the most of his chances.

And Graham is doing his part, even if he can't yet take a snap (via ESPN):

Though Graham is on the sideline, he has still been able to h...

Are These the Answers You Were Looking For?

On Thursday I posted an article that listed some things I felt would be interesting and important to look for during the Spring Game this year. Here they are below in bold with a snippet of text from that article following in italics.
Can Sunseri carry practice success onto the field under competition? “I want to see if what we are seeing and hearing about Sunseri’s calm demeanor and accurate deep throws in practice can translate into completions at game speed.” All three QBs got a nice amount of reps yesterday and each stayed with the squad they were assigned – Sunseri 1st team, Myers 2nd and Anderson 3rd.
Sunseri did not play to the level that he has been over the last four weeks of practice and in truth was showing more of the same we have seen from him during past games. He was overthrowing open receivers and had an INT returned for a TD by Tags. His stats on the day were a mediocre13-27 for 147 yards and one TD. Rivals.com paints an accurate picture of how things progressed for him in

Sparse Football Stories

I guess on the bright side, it isn’t like last year when FraudGraham had practices almost entirely closed, and there was little to go on with the spring practices. It’s also better than Louisville where Charlie Strong has closed most of the practices. Or even Syracuse where Doug Marrone has kept all the practices closed — resulting in simply having to make up stuff.
Still with practices having more time between them up until the final practice — the Blue & Gold Game — not to mention giving the kids the Easter weekend off; there just hasn’t been a lot of news.
There should be some tomorrow. Today is Practice 13 — only 2 left.
In the mean time, there are a few stories to review.

The injuries and attempts to swallow a bag of marijuana, have reduced the depth of the linebacking corps this spring. The good news is that depth will improve in the fall once people are healthy. Ejuan Price and Todd Thomas are both out with injuries, but will be ready in the fall. In the meantime, Dan Mason continues
