Chargers likely to be without defensive trio

The San Diego Chargers likely will be missing some key defensive players when they visit the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, end Luis Castillo and safety Eric Weddle aren't expected to play after missing Thursday's practice.

Merriman has been bothered by a foot injury and hasn't practiced all week. It's a soft tissue ailment that has proved problematic. He would be replaced by rookie Larry English.

Miles Austin homecoming, take two

Todd has already supplied one Miles Austin homecoming note for Sunday's game in the Meadowlands. But because we know you can't get enough...

Austin, who went to nearby Garfield High School, expects to handle 18 to 20 ticket requests for the game. Next week's game in Cowboys Stadium against San Diego is the big one with 35 or more requests. Why? Luis Castillo, who starts at defensive end for the Chargers, also went to Garfield High.

CHARGERS REPORT: Luis Castillo attempted to sidestep the topic of how much better he feels going into this season healthy. Football players get that way. Injuries are not their favorite topic.

Chargers Team Report – 08/13/09

Source: USA Today
Might Luis Castillo give the Chargers more bang for their bucks?
Castillo signed a seven-year contract extension in July 2008 valued at $48 million with $17.5 in guaranteed money, one that will keep him in San Diego through 2014.
But the Chargers are hoping from here on out he can be more productive.
While Castillo recorded [...]

Castillo has something to prove...

Jim Baumbach of Newsday sat down with Luis Castillo and has a great article on the veteran second baseman's struggles last year and what to expect this year. He has certainly made a positive impression on the field this spring with a .276 BA and a club high 15 walks giving him a .467 OBP. With the Twins Castillo hit second but they also put two lead-off caliber players at the bottom of the order, so he was really an table setting RBI guy, this spring his Slg. pct. is .409 and he has 8 RBI...

Spring Notes

There’s a buzz around this morning about today’s batting order and it has nothing to do with where Luis Castillo or Jose Reyes will bat. Manager Jerry Manuel has put today’s starting pitcher Oliver Perez in the no. 2 hole in the order. Manuel wants to see Perez bunt and is apparently confident [...]

Castillo Is A Great Comeback Player Candidate

As I watched the Mets' first spring training game, I saw Luis Castillo showing off his new look and his improved swing with great results. Today against the Marlins, he got on base all three times he came to the plate. He really seems to be trying to put last year behind him.

One Last Appeal For Another Bat

The Mets absolutely need to add another bat.
They have 3 championship caliber offensive players, another who may or may not be a potent force (Delgado) and that is it.
Church had a terrific beginning to the season but we have no idea how he will respond to his injury and he had never been consistently productive before (the Nats had been desperate for him to claim a regular job for 2+ years and he was unable to do so). I like what Murphy adds, but that type of production is simply not suffi...

Mets Looking At Rangers All Star, Michael Young

Tim Brown, at Yahoo Sports, is reporting that that the Texas Rangers are shopping All Star second baseman, Michael Young.
The Texas Rangers are quietly shopping shortstop Michael Young, said an AL executive whose team is in the market for a shortstop.
Young, 32, will start to draw on a five-year, $80-million contract extension in 2009. The contract grants him full no-trade rights next season, then limited protection the following two seasons, by which time he'll have 10-and-5 rights.

Castillo Appears Okay After Scary Knee Injury

It may have looked worse than what it was.? For Chargers DE Luis Castillo, it looked at first as if it would be a major, maybe even a season ending injury - but in the end, it looks as if he'll be okay.? Castillo suffered a cutblock Monday in the win over the Jets, and his knee seemed to go backwards.? Coach Norv Turner said Tuesday that he's going to be okay.? "It was a scary moment there, obviously," Chargers coach Norv Turner said Tuesday. "He's got soreness right now. All the tests, the MRI and everything, came out where he's fine."? Castillo looks as if he'll take the field this weekend vs the Raiders.

David Eckstein A Met at $9 Million Per Year???

This is ridiculous. I like David Eckstein, as he's a good, scrappy ballplayer; however, in a seminar I took with Bill Ripken this winter, he noted that the infielder had, "no tools, but manages to make it work"...

Well, Mr. Eckstein wants to get paid.

From the New York Daily News: Eckstein, the 2006 World Series MVP at shortstop, apparently is looking for a contract comparable to the four-year, $36 million deal Julio Lugo signed with the Red Sox last December, which might...
