Fourth-Round Pick OL Wallace Signs Deal

With the opening of training camp today, the 49ers signed another one of their recent draft picks – offensive lineman Cody Wallace. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Wallace was taken in the fourth-round of last April's draft out of Texas A&M. According to the 49ers' web-site, Wallace served as the Aggies' team captain and started 13 games, earning All-Big 12 Conference honors.
His signing comes a day after the 49ers signed third-round draft pick – cornerback Reggie Smith. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Smith was the 75th overall selection in April's draft out of the University of Oklahoma. He started 36 of the 39 games he played in, earning "first team" All-Big 12 Conference honors in his junior season. Only defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer, a first-round pick, remains unsigned.

Niners News and Notes With Camp Almost Here

And training camp looms! It's time to step up my game as the 49ers open camp this Thursday at 49ers headquarters in Santa Clara.
Here's what's been going on around the Internets:
The Sacramento Bee leads off its preview by profiling the biggest 49ers issue of the offseason: The Martz effect. Martz helped the Lions become a much more dynamic offense the past couple seasons, but the Lions' personnel was almost nothing like what the 49ers have. Firstly, Jon Kitna was pretty firmly entrenched as the Lions starter when Martz arrived. The 49ers starting quarterback position is as unclear as ever, with Alex Smith and Shaun Hill (and, possibly, J.T. O'Sullivan) battling for the top spot.
The Lions also had a natural number one receiver in Roy Williams, something the 49ers lack. Calvin Johnson was an immense threat last season, although he didn't have the impact many thought he would. But even Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey are seemingly more reliable receivers than anyone the 49ers have.
Now, on the flip side, the 49ers do have the type of talented tight end (Vernon Davis) and productive running back (Frank Gore) that the Lions never had in Martz's tenure…
Here's a pleasant story from Daniel Brown about how Fred Dean discovered the pot of gold that is the 49ers franchise…
Here is an excellent quick review of the 49ers full roster…
Cornerback Reggie Smith, a third-round draft pick in April, was signed on Tuesday. Terms of the contract were not announced…

Fiverings Attends Oklahoma Sooners Spring Game

I had the pleasure of attending the Oklahoma Sooners spring game in Norman on Saturday. The weather was partly cloudy with winds continuously gusting to approximately 30 MPH. The winds made it tough on the QB's and Kickers. There were 6 INT's thrown by the QB's. 3 INT's by starter Sam Bradford. Bradford did throw a beautiful TD pass to TE Germaine Gresham , who made a beautiful over-the-shoulder catch in full stride. Many passes were overthrown or underthrown because of the intense straight winds all afternoon. Freshman running back Justin Johnson from Gilmer, TX looks like he will be a good workhorse for the Sooners as he displayed some good power and speed during some of his runs. The offense is at a disadvantage this early in drills and the defense took advantage of that during the game.

The game was attended by many former Sooners as well as Baltimore Ravens QB, Steve McNair and country music singer and big-time OU fan, Toby Keith. Former Sooners on hand for the game were Safety Roy Williams (Dallas Cowboys), Jamaal Brown (New Orleans Saints), Davin Joseph (Tampa Bay Bucs), Travis Wilson (Cleveland Browns), Reggie Smith (2008 Draft), DJ Wolfe (2008 Draft), Allen Patrick (2008 Draft) and a host of others dating back to the 1940's.

I will post a couple of pics with me and Davin Joseph and Phil Loadholt(current All Big-12 offensive lineman.

Boom! Sooners fall flat on their faces in a BCS bowl yet again.

Wednesday's Fiesta Bowl loss to West Virginia had to be pretty painful for OU fans. Then again, they might be getting used to it by now. What went wrong this time? Here's my take, complete with a trip down memory lane.
