Tim Tebow Circus May Be Mitigated by Timing of Arrival at Minicamp (Video)

The New England Patriots are the kind of organization that likes to keep a low profile, and handles its business internally. That begs the obvious question: With that kind of modus operandi, why would the Pats want to sign Tim Tebow and take on the circus that follows him?
According to former Patriot Matt Chatham, Tebow may not bring quite as much attention to the team as some may think. Because Tebow is showing up for minicamp rather than OTAs — which are fully open to the media — there’s less of an opportunity for press to descend upon Foxboro and create a spectacle.
Check out Chatham talking about Tebow’s potential off-field impact on the Patriots in the video above.

Super Bowl’s Controversial Ending Will Be Greatly Scrutinized in Days to Come (Video)

Super Bowl XLVII had a little bit of everything.
But the part of the game that will be most talked about — other than the half-hour power outage, of course — is the controversial ending. On fourth-and-goal from inside the Ravens’ 5-yard line with less than two minutes to play, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick tossed a fade to Michael Crabtree in the end zone. Crabtree jostled with cornerback Jimmy Smith and the pass fell incomplete, allowing the Ravens to run down the clock and clinch a 34-31 win.
Many argued that Smith held Crabtree on the play, but Matt Chatham told NESN Daily that the previous play — a borderline helmet-to-helmet hit on the Niners’ wideout — may have been an even more significant non-call.
Check out Chatham’s take on the ending and the game overall in the video above.

Matt Chatham Stresses Routine for Patriots on Eve of AFC Championship Game (Video)

Matt Chatham is no stranger to playoff football, having suited up for all three of the Patriots’ Super Bowl championship teams.
The former special teams maven gave NESN Daily some insight into a player’s mindset the night before a big game — like the one New England will play against the Ravens on Sunday. Each player has his own routine leading up to game day, and Chatham stressed the importance continuing that same preparation regardless of the stage or conditions.
“It’s going to be a cold game tomorrow, but you still have to prepare your body,” he said. “Guys still need to hydrate, which I know sounds a little odd because it’s not going to be 75-80 degrees out [with] high humidity. … You still need a great night of rest. You can’t be overcome by the anxiety.:

Patriots Can’t Look Ahead After Clinching Home Field for AFC Championship Game

With the Broncos eliminated from the playoffs, it would be tough for the Patriots not to look ahead and realize that if they beat the Houston Texans on Sunday, the AFC Championship Game would be played at Gillette Stadium. Nine-year NFL veteran Matt Chatham says players have to look past that and just focus on the game ahead.
Even after pummeling the Texans 42-14 in Week 14, the Patriots face a challenge on Sunday evening. Houston will try to get revenge against New England, and the Patriots found out in 2010 that a regular season victory may not mean the same will occur in the playoffs. New England beat the Jets 45-3 in Week 13, then lost in the divisional round of the playoffs to New York 28-21.
Chatham will be doing color commentary for the BBC on Sunday, and he learned some new British slang for the broadcast. Watch the video above to hear why the former Patriots linebacker thinks the Patriots will be able to focus on the Texans despite the good news about home-field advantage a...

Patriots Should Go All Out, Not ‘Scoreboard Watch’ in Week 17 Due to Young Team (Video)

If anyone knows how the Patriots’ locker room gets hours before kickoff on Week 17, it’s three-time Super Bowl champion Matt Chatham. The Patriots’ former linebacker says New England should be going all out against the Dolphins.
Chatham said the Patriots will be able to monitor the 1 p.m. games until an hour before game time, then the monitors turn off and the players have to prepare for their opponent. While Tom Brady and the rest of the Pats may not know what’s going in the Texans or Ravens games, their coaches will, and they’ll adapt as necessary before game time.
Regardless of the outcome of the 1 p.m. games, Chatham thinks the young New England team should be going all out against the Dolphins. He said that while you may not be able to find a statistic to back it up, young teams have a tendency to feed off momentum.
Hear all of Chatham’s thoughts on the Patriots’ ‘scoreboard watching’ in the video above.

NFL Rules Have Made Window to Hit Quarterback Too Small (Video)

The NFL is trying to cut back on head injuries by increasing unnecessary roughness penalties, but NFL players old and new alike aren’t too pleased with them — especially defenders.
On Sunday, we saw two helmet-to-helmet shots penalized in the Patriots-Jaguars game. The first was on a play that Tom Brady appeared to duck down at the last second, before receiving a hit from Jeremy Mincey that drew a roughing the passer penalty. The second was a bang-bang play where Patrick Chung led with his shoulder and hit Cecil Shorts in the head as he was defenseless. NESN’s Matt Chatham didn’t particularly like either flag, but he had a bigger problem with the hit on Brady.
Chatham thinks the window to hit a quarterback is getting too small, and that it’s becoming too difficult to play the game fast while staying within the rules. You can’t hit a quarterback low at the knees and you can’t hit him high in the head.
Watch Chatham discuss the new NFL rules with Dale Arnold and Kevin Faulk on NESN Da...

Kevin Faulk, Matt Chatham Say Romeo Crennel’s Decision to Play Sunday Should Not Be Questioned (Video)

The Jovan Belcher murder-suicide may have taken place in Kansas City, but it hit home for many current and former Patriots who played under both head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.
Matt Chatham said the decision to play was rightfully on Crennel, and that in times of tragedy its best to trust your leader. Chatham also said that different players handle these situations differently and you have to look at each individual case about whether they can handle playing or not.
Kevin Faulk said if he was given the decision as a captain about whether to play or not, he would go to his teammates and try to figure out what the consensus was. He agreed with Crennel that for football players, sometimes the best distraction is to play the game they love.
Watch Chatham and Faulk discuss the Belcher tragedy with Dale Arnold in the video above from NESN Daily.

Fan Runs on Field During Florida State-Miami Game While Ball Is in Play (Video)

For one play in the Florida State-Miami game, there were 23 men on the field. And one of them was a crazy person.

With six minutes left in the first quarter, a man ran on the field waving his arms wildly as the Seminoles completed a 15-yard pass.
The play was ruled complete since officials ruled the field-stormer did not interfere with the play. It also looked like he went untouched by any players. If only NESN's own Matt Chatham was on the field.
Thankfully, the man was not a streaker, he was fully clothed, so we can show you the video. Watch the man grab his fifteen seconds of fame and somehow avoid all contact in the video below.

It marks the ninth time out of the last 13 meetings between the two quarterbacks that Brady has come out victorious. While Brady had more human-like numbers (23 for 31, 223 yards, one passing TD, one rushing TD) in Sunday's win over Denver, the running combination of Stevan Ridley, Brandon Bolden, Shane Vereen and Danny Woodhead combined for 251 yards on the ground and two touchdowns to help New England to their third win of 2012....

The list of people who thought the Patriots should have won on Sunday night are adding up. Add Kevin Faulk and Matt Chatham to that list. Faulk said that at first glance, he thought the game-winning field goal by Justin Tucker had traveled wide right. He wavered on his decision based on replays, but former teammate Chatham has talked him back into the no-good camp. Faulk wasn't just worried about whether the field goal went in or not. After he saw his friend Vince Wilfork rip off his helmet and take off after the replacement officials, he didn't know what...

Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins Present Climate Challenges for 'Easy' Patriots Schedule (Video)

The New England Patriots haven't had any issues traversing their path to the AFC East crown for much of the past decade. A big factor in overcoming that difficult road, though, is the timing of games against two division rivals. The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills are bitter rivals with the Patriots, and each of their respective climates can present serious problems for New England in road games.
