Five positions Oregon needs to upgrade in 2013

Making a Run
Last year the Oregon Ducks were heading into their 2012 college football season with questions surrounding a few key positions. Could Marcus Mariota be the real deal at quarterback and succeed as a freshman in the Pac-12? Would the Oregon secondary be able to improve upon their 2011 statistics despite the loss of John Boyett? Could Kenjon Barner replace the productivity and statistics of LaMichael James?
Well, a No. 2 postseason ranking later and the Ducks more than answered the questions surrounding their team in 2012. All of the players that needed to have big years had impressive statistics, and Oregon looks as though it is built to contend for a Pac-12 and National Title in the coming years.
That does not mean, however, that there are not a few positions that the Ducks must improve at should they want to solidify their place among the elite college football teams of 2013.
Here are the five positions Oregon needs to upgrade heading into next season.

Could Williams Follow In Wallace's Footsteps?

In the past, Dallas (TX) Skyline has been very good to Oregon. In 2011, the Ducks plucked arguably the best linebacker in the state, out of the clutches of the Big 12's best programs, and in to hands of the Oregon coaching staff by signing Anthony Wallace. This year, the Ducks are back at Skyline, checking in on rising three-star linebacker and former Wallace protege, Isaiah Williams.

The New Look Ducks

When I heard that Oregon Junior quarterback Darron Thomas was going pro, my first immediate reaction was about him and not the team, which is very unusual for me. Ten years ago, no, even five years ago, my first instinct and reaction would have me thinking, Oh God, why? Who are we going to get at quarterback to replace all those wins? 2012 is a very different story. Depth is everywhere on the Oregon roster, excluding the newcomers who will be on the roster as well come fall. Add them and this is an unbelievably talented, yet young team. If you look at the last three recruiting classes, you will know that Chip Kelly and his staff have recruited across the nation, not just the Pacific Coast, and have had major success.
Starting in 2010, recruiting at a major level has elevated the ducks, and many players now start or play major roles. This year’s starting quarterback at Oregon, Brian Bennett, from Crespi High School in Mission Viejo, California, was a 4-star recruit on Rivals.com, a...

Assessing Oregon's immediate needs in recruiting

This is the season of hype and hysteria in college football. Recruiting is such a compelling part of the game because it encompasses so much hope. Everybody's a potential superstar in February. Every high school phenom is can't-miss, and every program is sure to land four or five plays that will return Beloved U. to the glories of the past.
Read message boards from Southern California to Syracuse, Texas to Tennessee, and the story is the same: we've got to have this guy. Joe Bob Briggs is the player we need. He's a stud.
Back in the eighties the Ducks recruited an all-world talent from the Sacramento era named Kevin Wilhite. He was sprinter-fast and could bulldoze people like a combination of Bronko Nagurski and Jonathan Stewart. Five-star, can't miss, Parade All-American, number one in the country, instantly famous. Running track in the spring Wilhite tore a hamstring that never healed right. He floundered in and out of the lineup before becoming a capable f...

12-step program: 12 essential steps to Oregon's first BCS championship

If it's ever going to happen, it will be in the next 3-4 years. The window of dynasty and dominance opens only for a brief and undefinable time in a college football program. It's an elusive mixture of the right coach collecting strong foundational players, developed by a capable staff and supported by a fervent fanbase. It takes location, image, promotion, planning and luck. You have to escape the wrath of the NCAA and the encroachment of complacency. A dream doesn't endure forever, but while it does, the magical glow of possibility lights everything in its path. The glow of winning a Rose Bowl will last until kickoff next fall.
Photo left: Oregon comes up in every conversation about national title contenders. To stay there, they have to work their program and live the mantra.
Here's Oregon's checklist for football immortality:

Oregon recruiting: Bears, Ducks in a battle for elite Texas high school receiver Thomas Johnson

Jitterbug, juke or jet: With the ball in his hands, Thomas Johnson is one of the most dynamic receiver prospects in the country (dallassouthnews.org photo).

Yesterday Oregon got beaten to the podium for a half dozen of the nation's best high school football players. Blue chip studs at Army All-American Game sauntered to the microphone one by one and picked Cal, Stanford and USC. The Oregon stayed on the table unused. Forgetting that a few years ago, Oregon seldom made it to this stage, it was a disconcerting day for the faithful and anxious who follow recruiting.
All will be forgotten and forgiven if the Ducks can hold on to the 19 solid, well-chosen athletes they've already picked u...
