CORVALLIS -- What did we learn about the OSU safety corps this spring? Oregon State is currently only four strong in the depth chart behind starters Ryan Murphy and Tyrequek Zimmerman – is this cause for concern? Taking a look at the veterans, young guys and pondering the question of if there could be a position battle at one of the safety spots…

No clear-cut QB pick for Oregon State

Oregon State coaches have said they'll make their quarterback pick between Sean Mannion and Cody Vaz when one of them makes himself the clear-cut choice.

That hasn't happened yet.

Beavers coach Mike Riley will select a starting quarterback as the team prepares for its Aug. 31 opener against Eastern Washington.

A Friday scrimmage at Reser Stadium was the last of 15 spring practices for Oregon State, which had a bounce-back year in 2012 with a 9-4 record and a postseason bowl after winning a combined eight games the previous two seasons.

Mannion and Vaz each played one series in the two-hour scrimmage.

Mannion went first, going 8-11 passing for 67 yards and an interception. Vaz was 4-6 for 59 yards. His series produced a 1-yard touchdown run by Terron Ward.

''It was kind of quick, not very many plays, but it was good,'' Vaz said. ''We got some good work in, went down and scored. So I was happy with it.''

Mannion's interception, made by safety Ryan Murphy, came

Five positions Oregon State needs to upgrade in 2013

Plugging the holes
Despite an outstanding 2012 season–in which the Beavers went 9-4 and finished No. 13 in the BCS—OSU has plenty of holes to fill in 2013.
Mike Riley has lots of depth to play with next season, but he’s losing two huge players in seniors Markus Wheaton and Jordan Poyer.
If the Beavs hope to build on their 2012 success, they’ll need to plug up these problem positions in 2013.
Middle linebacker
The Beavers got a lot of production out of their linebacker corp this year, and most of it should carry over to next season with the return of Michael Doctor and D.J. Alexander. The big loss will come up the middle, as senior Feti Taumoepeau has exhausted his eligibility.
OSU’s linebackers were great last year against the run, but lacked at bringing pressure and dropping into coverage. They could use an extra dose of strength and speed.
Waiting in the wings is Joel Skotte, who played in four games as a freshman in 2012—racking up seven tackles and a forced fumble.
Skotte has the size and stre

Hogan helps Stanford finish strong

Kevin Hogan threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate start, and No. 16 Stanford overcame four turnovers to rally past No. 13 Oregon State 27-23 on Saturday and stay in control of its Pac-12 title hopes.

Cody Vaz fumbled late in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinal (8-2, 6-1) the ball at the Beavers 29. The only Oregon State (7-2, 5-2) turnover turned out to be the difference.

Hogan hit tight end Zach Ertz for a 13-yard touchdown for the go-ahead score and Stanford stopped the Beavers twice more. The Cardinal will head to second-ranked Oregon next week with a chance to take over sole control of the North Division and move closer to a spot in the conference championship game.

Oregon State won the turnover margin 4-1 but only converted three points out of them - and the one mistake cost the Beavers badly.

Vaz fumbled while shifting the ball during a scramble and Josh Mauro recovered. After Ertz caught the go-ahead touchdown, Oregon State got the ball back and Alex Debniak sacked Va

Then and now: What’s changed in the 2012 Beavers defense?

Health and fundamentals at forefront of Beavs D
The 2011 Beavers defense was horrid, ranking in the bottom of most major stat categories in the Pac-12.
Opponents averaged over 30 points and 411 yards per game. OSU had the worst run defense in the conference, with opponents averaging a near 198.6 yards per game on the ground.
Fast forward to 2012, and it’s a different story.
The Beavers have one of the tightest defenses in the Pac-12. They’re second in the conference in run defense, giving up an average of 83 yards per game. Opponents are averaging just 20.7 points per game.
What’s allowed this program to turn around in 2012?
Fundamentally Sound
Whether it was getting lost on coverage, or missing tackles, the OSU defense was not fundamentally sound. With such a young squad, that’s expected.
Watching games now, the 2012 squad is light years ahead.
The big thing is tackling. It looks so much better, with the players using their agility and strength to take down opposing players. No more of that jumping t

Week 4 College football preview: Oregon St. vs. UCLA matchup

Battle of redemption
I’m going to say it now. This could be the OSU Beavers biggest game of the season.
This is a battle of redemption. Oregon State vs. UCLA. Two teams with storied histories. Two teams trying to claw their way back into relevancy. Two teams that are undefeated.
Matchup: Oregon St. vs. UCLA (19)
Venue: Rose Bowl (Los Angeles, CA)
Game time, TV: 12:30 pm (PST), ABC
Date: Saturday, September 22, 2012
Weather: 86 high, 68 low, Partly Cloudy
Team Records: Oregon St. (1-0), UCLA (3-0)
If the boys in orange and black can pull out this road win, it’ll certainly land them within college football’s top 25. That would mark the first time since the end of 2009.
Like I said, this could be the biggest game of the season.
Game Notes
Oregon State has lost it’s last two contests against UCLA. Their last trip to the Rose Bowl ended in a stunning 17-14 Bruins victory.
UCLA’s offense has been amazing so far, ranking second amongst FBS teams. They sport the fifth best ground attack in the NCAA.

Pereira: Badgers' final shot ripped by refs

Upon further, further review . . .

You hear the "further review'' phrase every weekend during the football season. And now I'm calling it on myself -- or rather, my review of a play that I talked about on the air during the Wisconsin-Oregon State game on FX Saturday.

Here was the situation: Wisconsin was about to kick off after having just scored a touchdown to cut Oregon State's lead to 10-7 with 1:31 left in the fourth quarter. Wisconsin kicker Kyle French attempted an onside kick and also recovered the ball. After a booth review, the call was reversed and the ball was awarded to Oregon State. The officials said French touched the ball after going only nine yards, rather than the required 10 yards.

I went on FX with game announcers Craig Bolerjack and Joel Klatt and said I thought they'd overturn the call on the field. But after watching the replay several times afterward, I'm calling an audible. The more replays I saw while I was on the air, I started to hedge. I went back t

Offense main culprit in Badgers' loss at OSU

Not surprisingly, one of the worst games of Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema's seven-year tenure ended badly for the Badgers.
Oregon State Beavers fall camp ends & 2012 depth chart released

Roster Finally Comes Together
In tow with the rest of the Pac-12, Mike Riley has officially released the OSU Beavers depth chart for Nicholls State.
For the most part, there’s not many surprises. The Beavers will feature a fast and dangerous offense, with the majority of their weaknesses at defense.
Here’s a look at OSU’s depth chart for the 2012 season.
Beaver Offense
QB: Sean Mannion, So., 6-5, 212
No surprises here. Unlike last year, there shouldn’t be any confusion as the season goes on.
This isn’t 2011 when Katz was supplanted. Sean Mannion is miles ahead of the competition and could come on as the Beaver’s greatest weapon. Long as he’s healthy, he’s starting all 12 games.
RB: Storm Woods, Fr-RS, 6-0, 202
The biggest question going into the season was who starts in the backfield. Mike Riley hasn’t disappointed with his decision.
Wood, a reshirt freshman last year, was the offensive player of the year for the redshirt squad. Though he’s not the Beaver’s most experienced running back

Good morning and Happy Hump Day, Cougs! I'm back after a brief hiatus to hang out with Wayne Gretzky at the Mariners game last Wednesday. Of course, by "hang out with Wayne Gretzky", I mean, "linger around awkwardly and take bad cell phone pictures of Watne Gretzky", but that's neither here nor there. In other personal Huddy news you don't particularly care about, I'm nursing a pulled groin, but I am pressing on. I blog with pain, folks. I do it for you. We've reached the end of the line for my Pac 12 position rankings. I'm going to close the book on this interminable series with a look at the defensive backfields. You may be wondering what happened to the offensive lines (or you may not), but I figured I would have a really tough time with that one because I know very little about each school's offensive line and it probably would have gone something like, "S...
