Referee blows FG call at Hyundai Sun Bowl (Video)

An official at the Hyundai Sun Bowl made a horrible call during the first quarter of the Hyundai Sun Bowl on New Year's Eve when a field goal attempt by USC Trojans kicker Andre Heidari was initially called good even though it was shanked wide left.

The official underneath the left goalpost was in the best position to make the call as to whether the USC field goal attempt was good or no good. However, as we watch the video below closely, it would appear that the official was looking straight ahead the entire time that the ball was in the air, and didn't look up to make sure the ball went inside the goalpost. That would be our best explanation as to why this official made such an inexcusably bad call by calling the field goal good.

Fortunately, instant replay was used to correct the official's mistake, and the call was properly reversed so that the final ruling was that the field goal was no good. In the end, however, the missed field goal was insignificant in the final outcome as Georgia

Sun Bowl official botched missed field goal call, had it overturned (Video)

This is precisely why we have instant replay. During the first quarter of the Sun Bowl between USC and Georgia Tech on Monday, USC kicker Andre Heidari clearly missed what should have been a relatively easy 37-yard field goal. The only problem was the official standing underneath the left upright didn’t see it that way, and he signaled that the kick was good.
After an animated protest from Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, the play was reviewed and overturned. As you can see from the photo below, the ball clearly passed over the upright and missed wide left:

Fortunately for instant replay, there was no harm done. Unlike the close call in the Patriots-Ravens game earlier in the year that inspired Bill Belichick to grab an official, the play was reviewed. People make mistakes. Had it not been for technology, USC would have been given a much-needed three points in a game it wound up losing 21-7.

Notre Dame defeats USC to finish undefeated, headed to BCS championship game

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will finish the regular season undefeated. Notre Dame will finish the year 12-0 headed for a national championship meeting against a yet unknown SEC opponent. Notre Dame was a 5.5 point favorite on Saturday night. They won by x. On the first drive of the game Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead on a 27 yard field goal by Kyle Brindza. Their second possession resulted in a 9 yard touchdown by Theo Reddick. USC freshmen quarterback, Max Wittek was making his first start. On the first play of the second quarter he connected with Robert Woods for a 11 yard touchdown. The two teams would then trade field goals. Brindza would hit a 29 yarder for the Fighting Irish while Andre Heidari would connect on a 39 yard attempt for the Trojans. With time expiring in the first half Brindza would make his third field goal of the game to give Notre Dame a 16-10 lead. After missing his first attempt of the second half, Brindza connected with his fourth field goal of the game with ...

Midseason report card: USC

QUARTERBACK: B-

1,475 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions aren't bad numbers. In fact, the 16 touchdowns are identical to Barkley's total at this time last season. However, if you are the preseason Heisman favorite and possess, arguably, the best wide receiving duo in the country, those numbers are expected to be inflated. Barkley's been sharp at times -- four games with a 60 completion percentage or higher including two 77 completion percentage gameswhile at other times, he's looked less than crisp. In the loss at Stanford in which he completed just 48 of his passes and was 10-of-20 last weekend at Washington. Aside from Barkley's numbers, as a team the Trojans are completing only 30 of their third downs. There's a saying, "quarterbacks make their money on third down" and as the leader of the offense Barkley takes the blame for USC's ineffectiveness on third down.

OFFENSIVE LINE: B

Lane Kiffin holds 28 second press conference

LOS ANGELES --- While addressing the media at Wednesdays practice, USC head coach Lane Kiffin said that his team was back on track.

The Trojans third year head coach then took a step back back into last week. He stepped off of his padded box and returned to practice.

I gotta go, Kiffin said.

His meeting with the media lasted all of 28 seconds. Kiffin apparently took exception to being asked about an injured players return to practice. After being asked about that players return, Kiffin responded I dont know. A few seconds later, he followed that answer with the aforementioned I gotta go.

Last week, Kiffin and USC made national news after banning a local reporter from practice. The reporter reported kicker Andre Heidari underwent knee surgery and was scheduled to miss three weeks.

During fall camp, USC proclaimed they would no longer discuss injuries. Media members were no longer allowed to report on injuries observed in practice or if players cannot participate in practice because of injuries."

Media bans show teams still don't understand access

It's been an interesting week in the college football media universe, with Los Angeles Daily News reporter Scott Wolf briefly banned from USC practices, Washington following in USC's footsteps by prohibiting media from reporting on injuries and SB Nation's Spencer Hall denied a credential for the Florida-Tennessee game. These situations all have their own unique elements, but they illustrate three related points: many big college football programs are unnecessarily paranoid, college coaches have too much power, and no one on the team side really understands how denying access or prohibiting reporting topics will backfire.

Wolf's suspension is arguably the most egregious case here. It came from reporting (non-practice) injury news about the knee surgery kicker Andre Heidari had following an injury in USC's opener, and it drew widespread condemnation from college football and media reporters before USC quickly reversed course Wednesday night.

USC reconsiders, lifts ban on reporter

Since we have taken the time to point out everything that USC has done in the past month that doesn’t paint them in the best light, we also must take the time to point out when they decide to right a wrong.
On Wednesday, we wrote that the university decided to ban Los Angeles Daily News reporter Scott Wolf for reporting an injury to kicker Andre Heidari. USC banned Wolf from practice for two weeks and USC’s game against Cal for violating their policy barring the media from reporting strategy or injury-related news observed during in-season practices.
Wolf and his editor at the Daily News, Gene Warnick contended that the report didn’t stem from a practice and the two met with USC Athletic Director Pat Haden on Wednesday. And as a result of that meeting, the ban was lifted.
Wolf tweeted the news Wednesday night:

I am happy to say my football practice ban was lifted after talks with Pat Haden and area sports editors. Practice policy talks continue

USC bans writer for reporting injury to kicker Andre Heidari

USC just can’t keep themselves out of the news these days. Which is usually a good thing. But when all the news seems to be painting the program in a negative light, it certainly isn’t a good thing.
Just in the past month alone, USC has banned visiting teams from conducting walk-throughs at the Coliseum and they have pulled the scholarship of a walk-on player so it could be given to a player who had just been released from jail. And now, they’re back in the news for banning Daily News reporter Scott Wolf for reporting that kicker Andre Heidari would miss time because of injury.
Wolf has been banned from practice for two weeks and he will not be issued a press credential for USC’s Sept. 22 game against California at the Coliseum.
While USC is mum on the subject, the Daily News is obviously upset about Wolf being banned.
“From our standpoint, Scott was doing his job,” Gene Warnick, sports editor for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, which includes the Daily News and other Southland pap...

USC bans writer from Cal game and two weeks of practice for reporting an injury

USC has a fairly simple policy regarding injuries this season: don’t talk about them. That goes for players, coaches, staff and apparently members of the media. Trojans kicker Andre Heidari suffered an injury during the team’s opening game against Hawaii that required knee surgery last week. He did not travel with the team to New Jersey and is expected to miss about three weeks.
We know all this because it was reported by Scott Wolf of the Daily News over the weekend. As a result, the team has banned Wolf from attending the next two weeks of practice and will not issue him a press credential for the game against California on Sept. 22. Daily News sports editor Gene Warnick does not agree with the decision.
“From our standpoint, Scott was doing his job,” Warnick said, adding that he and a couple of other sports editors are scheduled to speak with USC Athletic Director Pat Haden about the issue. “This wasn’t something that was part of practice. We were just trying to report the news.”...

Special teams a commodity at USC

When LSU beat Alabama by a score of 9-6 without a single touchdown, the world of special teams took center stage as people realized that even national championship-caliber games can be won - or lost - by those who are often ignored.

"I think it shows that special teams in every game is really important. It came down to that Alabama missed four field goals. That's just not good," said USC punter Kris Albarado.

The true freshman scholarship punter decided to redshirt his freshman year to help USC weather the scholarship reductions for the long run. In the meantime, walk-on and redshirt junior transfer Kyle Negrete handles punting duties with his remaining eligibility.

Albarado and fellow freshman place kicker Andre Heidari were the first two kickers USC recruited since Troy Van Blarcom in 2005, who left after becoming academically ineligible after only a year with the Trojans. Many colleges don't give their scholarships - especially when they are facing three-years-worth of reductions -
