Some Surprises on Utah’s Post-Spring Depth Chart

The University of Utah released its pre-fall depth chart Monday on the heels of a high-scoring Red-White spring game.
Here’s a look at the biggest winners and losers coming out of spring workouts and looking ahead to fall camp.
QB:
Every coach preaches about the open competition for quarterback and every other position for that matter. Coach Whittingham certainly hinted at the fact that Adam Schulz and Brandon Cox were pushing Travis Wilson for the starting job. If you happened to buy into that coach talk, Wilson quickly put any of those questions to bed. The sophomore signal caller was spectacular Saturday completing 13 of 17 passes for 210 yards. He directed the White team to five scores in the first half before getting lassoed for the game. Most importantly he did not have any turnovers.
Only two other QBs played Saturday. Adam Schulz got the chance to show off his rocket arm when he connected with Dres Anderson for a 57-yard completion on the first play from scrimmage for ...

Utah can't finish off No. 13 USC, loses 38-28

The Utah Utes couldn't have asked for a better start. They just didn't finish.

''We were ready to play. Our guys came out with a lot of emotion and energy in that first series and battled hard the entire way,'' Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. But Matt Barkley passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns, including an 83-yarder to Marqise Lee in the fourth quarter, and No. 13 Southern California came back from a two-touchdown deficit to beat Utah 38-28 Thursday night.

Utah (2-3, 0-2 Pac-12) forced turnovers 1:16 apart to open the game, including a play by Nate Fakahafua to score from 8 yards out after stripping the ball from Barkley after a bad snap.

''What a great way to start the game. It got the crowd into it. I just grabbed (Barkley) and did what I used to do in high school, just ripped the ball away,'' Fakahafua said.

But the Trojans (4-1, 2-1) turned the tables in the fourth, scoring twice in a span of less than 3 minutes to turn a 3-point game into victory in t

Barkley connected with Lee with 12:10 remaining, then cornerback Nickell Robey intercepted a pass by Jon Hays and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown.

Lee finished with 12 catches for 192 yards. The teams combined for 736 yards of offense and 222 yards in penalties.

Utah led 14-0 less than three minutes in, and was up 21-10 with 8:54 left in the half after Hays passed 18 yards to DeVonte Christopher, elec

Barkley stripped on first play, Utah scores

Matt Barkley and the Trojans are off to a rough start. On their first play from scrimmage, the center Khaled Holmes snapped the ball between Barkley’s legs and Utah’s Nate Fakahafua was there when Barkley picked it up. Fakahafua stripped the ball from the Trojans’ quarterback and took it in for a touchdown to put the Trojans down 7 early.

On their next possession after a second Utah kickoff, the USC center Holmes snapped the ball too early and again Utah recovered the fumble and scored quickly going up 14 – 0 with 12 minutes left in the first quarter.
The Trojans did follow those two horrible opening drives with a drive the field and score on a Silas Redd touchdown run.

2012 Pac-12 College Football Preview: Utah Utes

Utah made the giant leap from the Mountain West to a BCS automatic qualifying conference largely because the Utes routinely took on — and usually overcame — a challenging menu of AQ programs. The 2008 unbeaten campaign, for example, started at Michigan’s Big House and ended in the Sugar Bowl against Alabama.

The transitional issue focused on the newcomer competing week in and week out in the quarterback-centric West Coast loop. Kyle Whittingham brought in high-mileage offensive coordinator Norm Chow as a Pac-12 tour guide. His mantra was getting ready to play every weekend; the Pac-12 doesn’t offer Mountain West breathers.
The Utes did, even if the results weren’t readily apparent. The 8-5 season followed four years averaging 10.5 wins. Utah finished in the middle of the standings after being a top three team in its former conference.

“Week in, week out, the grind is obviously the biggest thing,” said former quarterback coach and latest offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, wh...

Utes gunning for Pac-12 South despite QB battle

A year later, Utah's goal remains the same - winning a Pac-12 South title it let slip away in last year's regular-season finale with a loss to lowly Colorado.

The big difference this time is the Utes will have to get past a Southern California team no longer ineligible for the postseason.

''It's a formidable challenge and a lofty goal, with USC being a top 5 team and maybe the top team in the country,'' Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said of the Trojans. ''We've got our work cut out for us. ... But we're a better team top to bottom this year.''

Utah returns 16 starters from a team that finished 8-5 in its inaugural Pac-12 Conference season, including a 30-27 overtime victory over Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.

But gone is offensive coordinator Norm Chow, replaced by 2009 Sugar Bowl-winning quarterback Brian Johnson and his modified spread attack.

So what if Whittingham still hadn't officially announced his starting quarterback just two weeks before the

Hump Day With Huddy - Defensive Line Rankings

We all have our favorite defensive lineman. Mine is Steve Lattimer.
Good morning and Happy Hump Day, Cougs! It's good to be back in the saddle after a week off for the Fourth of July. I'm feeling refreshed and ready to close out the conference position rankings as we start to enter the home stretch toward the kickoff of another college football season. These things were coming fast and furious for a while. When it comes to ranking quarterbacks, receivers and running backs, there is a certain advantage from, you know, having heard of most of the principles involved. Today, it's time to get into the trenches, where the slightly more anonymous roam. Fear not, though. The Pac-12 has it's share of "Star" power so let's take a look, shall we.

1. Utah - Star Lotulelei, Dave and Joe Kruger, Nate Fakahafua, Niasi Leota, Joape Pela, Seni Faounuku

See? "Star" power! Get it? Oh come on, that's funny. Aaaaanyhew, any time you have the best def...
