Week 3 Preview: A Look Across the Lines

As the Rams prepare to face the 0-2 Seattle Seahawks in Qwest Field in Seattle, I wanted to go ahead and preview one of the Rams few winnable games in the first 8 weeks. The Rams have the vastly improved Buffalo Bills at home before a bye and the solid Washington Redskins in Washington. Then the Rams face the Cowboys and the Patriots in consecutive weeks. The Seahawks are struggling, but the Rams have had trouble against them in the last few years – especially in Qwest Field.
Doug Farrar of my favorite website Football Outsiders, compares the Seahawks and Rams for the Seattle Times here. He shows what the Seahawks must do to win the game, so let's take that an reverse it for the Rams.
Doug identifies Steven Jackson as the biggest threat for the Rams, as Bulger probably won't have time to throw down field to Holt and Avery. LG Jacob Bell will be suited up but not starting, so the Rams will have the same struggling offensive line as last week. The Seahawks Patrick Kerney will face off against Alex Barron of the Rams and that should be the match-up to watch in the passing game.

Seahawks had 8 sacks against the 49ers and Doug hits the nail on the head with this comment, "If the Seahawks need to blitz to get pressure in this game, their front four has major problems.". So, the Rams need to focus on blocking the front four of Seatlle with a fullback or TE. Additionally, quick passes and a healthy dose of Steven Jackson should keep the front four off balance. Could the Rams possibly goad Seattle into blitzing to burn their secondary? I've proposed crazier ideas.
Now to the other side of the ball, Doug nails the Rams defense in just a few sentences. "Watching St. Louis' defense against the Giants reminded me that while great defenses play like bulls in the proverbial china shop, bad defenses play afraid, and it's easy to tell the difference. The Rams' secondary plays off the line for the most part, dropping linebackers into coverage or in basic placements, leaving the middle zone wide open for draws, traps, cutbacks, and all manner of misdirection."
When the Rams defense was playing their best underHaslett a few years back – they were playing aggressive and flying to the ball. As Doug identifies, the Rams are playing scared and tentative. It is not too late to change their tendencies after two weeks. The Rams have made only one of their promised changes, moving Tye Hill to the nickel corner and starting Ron Bartell and Fahkir Brown. Bartell has been the Rams best corner so far and hopefully he and Brown can keep the new Seahawk wide receivers covered. Koren Robinson and Keary Colbert are not All-Pro acquisitions, but they are no worse than the receivers the Rams faced in week 1 in Philly.
We all know that the Rams have been historically bad this year and are on pace to set the record for the worst team in the Football Outsiders DVOA era (1995-). But, we Rams fans think that they can play better. If there was ever a team to bounce back against, it is the 0-2 Seahawks. Whether the Rams will bounce back or not, we will just have to watch.

More Bad News For Rams

Rams rookie WR Keenan Burton will be out 3-4 weeks after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus. He joins WR Drew Bennett on the sidelines. On the good side, fellow rookie Donnie Avery will get more time at wide receiver. On the bad side, wide receiver Eddie Kennison will be active for the game against the Seahawks.
As the Rams are subtracting wide receivers, their foe in Week 3, the Seattle Seahawks are adding receivers. They completed a trade Tuesday for Keary Colbert and signed free agent Koren Robinson. No word on whether or not Colbert and Robinson will be playing against the Rams.

Is there a doctor in the building?

You know it's bad when you have to use your backup quarterback at wide receiver... and then he gets hurt.

The Seahawks have lost six receivers to injury already this season, including the aforementioned Wallace, Deion Branch and Bobby Engram. Today they got some help, trading for Keary Colbert and signing Koren Robinson, a former Seahawk.

The NFC West may be the worst division in football, top-to-bottom, so Seattle is very much alive, despite an 0-2 start. Don't be surprised, though, if the Arizona Cardinals come out on top when all is said and done.
Check out more from Tony Arnoldine at http://tixytixy.blogspot.com

The Pros: USC vs. Ohio St.

The Pros pits two college football rivals against one another and sees which has produced a more eligible pro team.

The Offense

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_3BaJMgGKAmE/SMmEB_Fc6cI/AAAAAAAAEt4/aTWfmeU7Udg/s320/palmer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244868410698688962" />Quarterback

USC currently has 4 quarterbacks in the league. Two of whom won Heisman's in Leinart and Palmer and two of whom have yet to start an NFL game in Cassel and Booty. Meanwhile the Buckeyes have only one quarterback in the league now that Krenzel is gone, and that is Troy Smith. The undersized mobile QB who's yet to make a dent in the NFL.

Edge: USC

Running Backs

USC of course has the double headed monster from the Colliseum in Bush and White still roaming the NFL as starters. In addition they have Justin Fargas whose playing the role of starter for the Raiders and Chauncey Washington in Jacksonville. The Buckeyes lone running back rep is Antonio Pittman whom like Troy Smith has yet to make an impact in the NFL.

Edge: USC

Wideouts

The Trojans currently have 5 wideouts suiting up in the NFL, none of whom have made a significant impact. If you had to chose a starting 3 for the Trojans it would probably be Steve Smith (not of the Panthers but of the Giants), Keary Colbert and perhaps Dwayne Jarrett. Not that impressive. Meanwhile the Buckeyes have the emerging Santonio Holmes, Joey Galloway and Anthony Gonzalez amongst their 7 total wideouts in the NFL.

Edge: tOSU

Tight Ends

Ben Hartsock vs. Rookie Fred Davis and Billy Miller. Pretty nondescript. Edge to USC for the rookie with potential.

Edge: USC

Offensive Line

Overall the Buckeyes have a handful more lineman but let's just take a look at whom would be the starters for each team.

Center: Ryan Kalil vs. Nick Mangold
Guards: Deuce Lutui & Chilo Rachal vs. Adrien Clarke & Rob Sims
Tackles: Winston Justice & Sam Baker vs. Orlando Pace & Kirk Barton

A lot of youngsters for both sides other than Orlando Pace who will be a hall of lineman. Neither team has two guards in the NFL that are currently starting.

Edge: tOSU

The Defense

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3BaJMgGKAmE/SMmECCZa5aI/AAAAAAAAEuA/9qgIC2FiIng/s320/golston.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244868411587749282" />D-Line

Tackles: Mike Patterson & Sedrick Ellis vs. Ryan Pickett & Tim Anderson
Ends: Kenechi Udeze & Frostee Rucker vs. Will Smith & Jay Richardson

Will Smith is probably the best player amongst this batch but Udezi isn't far behind and the Trojans have much more depth than does tOSU.

Edge: USC

Linebackers

Lofa Tatupu, Keith Rivers, Willie McGinest vs. AJ Hawk, Mike Vrabel, Na'il Diggs

The Trojans agter their top three only have Thomas Williams (who?) to turn while the Buckeyes have Bobby Carpenter, Vernon Gholsten (overrated) and Matt Wilhelm as other options. For me its too close to call.

Edge: Push

Secondary

Corners: Brian Kelly & Terrell Thomas vs. Antoine Winfield & Nate Clements
Safeties: Sammy Knight & Troy Polamalu vs. Donte Whitner & Will Allen

The Buckeyes are very deep at corner with Youboty, Shawn Springs & Chris Gamble as other options so feel free to disagree with my top two choices. Other way, despite the dominant Polamalu the Buckeyes have a much deeper secondary.

Edge: tOSU

The Special Teams

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3BaJMgGKAmE/SMmECYRLsLI/AAAAAAAAEuI/2LRtLBOi2Vg/s320/ginn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244868417458778290" />Return Men

Reggie Bush vs. Ted Ginn. Both have been highly disappointing at their actually poosition in the NFL, but both still pack some punch on special teams. As solid as Reggie Bush was as a punt returner in college he's not as fast nor as dangerous as Ginn on returns. Ginn adds the kickoff of return dimension which Bush currently lacks as well.

Edge: tOSU

Kickers

Neither team has a punter in the NFL, which is surprising to me given it seems like every tOSU punter kicks the ball 70 yards against Michigan, and only Ohio St. has kicker Mike Nugent of the Jets who got injured and limped around last weekend.

Edge: tOSU

Who Would Win?

Overall the Buckeyes have 9 more alumni in the NFL than do the Trojans (46-37). Their roster would have much more depth. The Trojans obviously have a much more skilled passer, but he would have no receivers to throw the ball to especially with the corners that the Buckeyes would throw out there. Both teams have dominant linebackers who could stuff the run. It's difficult to say who would be victorious but I'd give the edge to the Buckeyes mostly due to depth at offensive line and wideout

All Rosters Pulled from ESPN

2008 NFL Rookie Report - Wide Receivers

Wide receivers, more than any other position, have the most trouble adjusting to the NFL game. Cornerbacks at the pro level are just quicker, stronger, and smarter than at the college level. Still, every year one or two rookie wide receivers emerge and have an immediate impact in fantasy football circles (ala Dwayne Bowe). To help you identify the rookies with the greatest potential for success in 2008, Bruno Boys staff writer Cory Steger has done his homework and presents to you the 2008 Wide Receiver Rookie Report.

Has Mike Shanahan lost his touch?

Boss Bailey, Keary Colbert - 2 players with good rookie seasons and nothing since. Niko Koutouvides - career backup and special teams player is going to start at middle linebacker this year? Do we even have to mention Darrell Jackson or Dewayne Robertson? Has the coach that took the Broncos to the promise land of the Super Bowl lost it?

I think not - I think he is trying to duplicate the method he used for past success!

AFC WEST POSITION BATTLES

No. 2 running back: Darren Sproles vs. Jacob Hester

Yes, you know a team is in good shape when its biggest concern is the backup tailback position. But this is a position of concern for San Diego as it tries to reach the Super Bowl. Superstar LaDainian Tomlinson was banged up in the playoffs last season and at 29, he has to be careful not to become susceptible to wear and tear. Plus, his super-backup Michael Turner is now in Atlanta after cashing in during free agency.

Sproles is an interesting player and a dynamic return man. But he is small and has yet to prove he can carry the load. That is why the Chargers moved up in the third round to take Jacob Hester. The LSU product can also play fullback. Hester is tough and was a winner in college. It will not be a surprise if Hester becomes Tomlinson's top backup. But Sproles is a weapon and he will be a factor as well.

Intensity index: Hot

No. 3 cornerback: Antoine Cason vs. Paul Oliver

Like the backup running back position, the nickel cornerback position battle is usually not all that hot to follow. But the Chargers do play in the nickel defense package about 60 percent of the time, So they will need a capable player here. The team drafted Cason out of Arizona with the No. 28 overall pick with designs of him becoming the nickel cornerback behind Antonio Cromartie and Quentin Jammer. Cason is a smart player and was a playmaker in college. But Oliver won't be easy to beat out. He is feisty and has shown he is capable of doing the job. But when push comes to shove, a first-round pick should end up winning the job.

Intensity index: Mild
