Colledge staying home for voluntary workouts

Daryn Colledge is part of a sizeable group of restricted free agents around the NFL who are skipping their team's voluntary offseason workout program. The Packers' starting left guard for most of the last four years is looking for a long-term contract after getting tendered at the second-round level. He's working out at his offseason home in Boise, Idaho, rather than attend the Packers' offseason workout program. Colledge's agent, Jeff Sperbeck, said he didn't know whether Colledge will take part in any voluntary work this offseason. The Packers also have organized-team activities practices from mid-May to mid-June. If Colledge signs a tender with another team, the Packers will get a second-round draft pick as compensation if they don't match the offer. But teams generally are reluctant to part with a pick as high as a second-rounder, so it's unclear if Colledge will draw any interest by the April 15 deadline to sign with another club. Colledge wants a multi-year deal and like many fourth-and fifth-year players surely is unhappy he's not an unrestricted free agent, which he would have been under previous free-agency rules that changed this offseason. The Packers don't know whether he will be a starter this season, so they might not have much incentive to sign him longer term except at a bargain rate. "That’s their choice," Sperbeck said. Also, an NFL source said that cornerback Will Blackmon has signed his restricted free-agent tender, meaning he's no longer eligible to sign with another team. Blackmon is recovering from knee-reconstruction surgery performed Oct. 29 and is doing his offseason rehabilitation in southern California. -- Pete Dougherty, pdougher@greenbaypressgazette.com

Packers OG Daryn Colledge Considering Skipping Offseason Workouts

Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports the <a href="/content/team/53">Green Bay Packers</a>' restricted free agents likely aren't headed for a mass boycott of the offseason workout and practice programs, though guard <a href="/content/player/1590"><a href="/content/player/1590">Daryn Colledge</a></a> might skip some or all of that voluntary work. "It's definitely something we're considering, yes," said Jeff Sperbeck, Colledge's agent. "That's the only thing you have to try to make the team talk to you or deal with you, is to withhold services for a while," Sperbeck said. "You can go sign it and do it and hope something gets worked out. We had a nice conversation (with the Packers) at the (NFL scouting) combine, so we'll see what comes of it."<br />

Daryn Colledge: 'I am very happy' with Packers' offer

If Daryn Colledge isn't happy with the Green Bay Packers, he isn't letting on.The fifth-year guard wrote on his Facebook page this afternoon he "has been tendered by the Packers for next season. And unlike popular belief and what is written in the papers, I am very happy with the Packers offer, and if I'm back this season, I look forward to another playoff run and a shot at the title."It is believed Colledge received the second-round tender, although that has not been confirmed. He's expected to compete at left guard with fellow restricted free agent Jason Spitz, who is the early front-runner to win the job.Colledge did not respond to a text message this morning.-- Tom Pelissero, tpelisse@greenbaypressgazette.comhttp://twitter.com/tompelissero

Packers’ Colledge will be back, Lang will move to right tackle

Mike McCarthy announced Tuesday that Daryn Colledge, currently a restricted free-agent, would get a shot at redemption in 2010 at the left guard position. Colledge regressed mightily in 2009 and many questioned whether or not his future was in Green Bay. However, McCarthy’s announcement means the Packers will be putting a tender on Colledge that [...]

When Will The Packers Tender Their Restricted Free Agents?

I was reading this story&nbsp;about how the Green Bay Packers intend to offer a contract for 2010 to LG Daryn Colledge despite his miserable season, and it made me wish they would just get the suspense over. Officially all NFL teams have until March 4th to tender a contract to their restricted free agents, but some teams have already done so.&nbsp; The 49ers announced their restricted free agent tender offers on Monday&nbsp;as one example. Maybe the negotiations with the unrestricted free agents are delaying the announcement.

Packers Could Release OG Daryn Colledge This Offseason?

Daryn Colledge could be released by the Packers in the offseason, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The 27-year-old guard started all 16 games for Green Bay over the last two seasons, and provides the versatility to work at different spots on the offensive line – but he gave up a team-high 7.5 sacks in 2009.

Postgame notes: Colledge fine; Triplette speaks

A couple of quick notes before I start writing for the paper ...* The Packers' only notable injury was the ankle bruise sustained by LG Daryn Colledge, who thinks he got kicked by a teammate and only missed one series. "The ankle's great, Colledge said. "... It was a swift kick, the leg went numb for a little bit in the ankle, and it was a better thing to put somebody else in there that could battle at 100 percent while I got fixed up."* Referee Jeff Triplette spoke about why Dallas wasn't allowed to challenge the recovery of Tony Romo's fourth-quarter fumble, which led to a Packers touchdown. What specifically was challenged by Dallas on the fumble?"Dallas was challenging that their player had recovered the football loose in the field of play and was down my contact. My mistake, that’s not a reviewable aspect of a play. A recovery of a loose ball in the field of play is not reviewable by rule. So we just couldn’t review it."Why isn’t it reviewable?"Fumbles in the field of play – recovery of a loose ball in the field of play is not reviewable by rule."That has been the rule all along?"That has been the rule (since) replay came back." Did you start to review the play?"I got over to the review (booth) and we started talking about, with my replay guys, that I’m not sure we can review this. It starts going through your mind, I’m not sure we can review this. And then I started thinking about by rule, you can’t review a recovery of a loose ball in the field of play. It was my mistake to allow him to start the challenge. I should have just talked him out of it before we started."Did you start to review the play?"No, no, no, no, we never got to the film. We never got in the booth to review. Just put the headphones on and started talking through what we had." -- Tom Pelissero, tpelisse@greenbaypressgazette.comhttp://twitter.com/tompelissero

Rant: What Is The Point of NFL Fines?

At the bottom of&nbsp;this post from the Press-Gazette&nbsp;is an update about the fines handed out from the Lions game:

Daryn Colledge was fined $5,000 for unnecessarily striking an opponent late. Donald Driver was fined $5,000 for an illegal blindside block to the head and neck area. Nick Barnett was fined $7,500 for a facemask. Spencer Havner was fined for a horse-collar tackle.

I don't recall if Havner was flagged for that tackle, but I know the other 3 players all were flagged for a 15 yard penalty. I'm not trying to sound like a union rep. or an agent, but why are they getting penalized twice?
The only good reason I've come up with is that's it's a second reminder of the unnecessary conduct. Maybe every player clearly sees it on his paystub, or has to sign an acknowledgment. But I would expect a clear second reminder is when the player is chewed out by a coach during film review during the week.&nbsp;
This isn't some big revenue source for the NFL either, all the&nbsp;fines are donated&nbsp;to charity.
I don't see how a $7,500 fine is going to stop facemask penalties from happening. It's also not a big blow to most of the NFL millionaires, although Havner's poor by NFL standards. It just seems like a pointless PR exercise by the NFL.
It's also possible that fines make bad actors act out.&nbsp; So says Mark Cuban:

"Getting fined for pulling out a pen, or fake mooning is only going to bring more visibility and marketability to the person who did it," Cuban wrote. "Players know it and that's why they do it. Dennis Rodman was the expert at it. It's not about whether the fine will have a negative financial impact, it's about whether the fine can have a positive impact."

Wrapping up the week

It appears the Packers dodged a major bullet this week with Daryn Colledge. The starting left guard dropped out of practice on Thursday after spraining his right foot, but coach Mike McCarthy said today that he expects Colledge to start Sunday against the Bengals."I think he's going to be OK for Sunday," McCarthy said after practice. "We're going to test him tomorrow, so he's making progress."Had his injury been more serious, it could have caused major problems along the line. First, McCarthy would have had to decide how to replace Colledge. The two options would have been putting Scott Wells in at center and moving center Jason Spitz to left guard. The other was to play rookie T.J. Lang at left guard and leave Spitz at center. There could have been ramifications at left tackle, too, considering that Colledge is the top backup to Chad Clifton at left tackle. In other injury news:* It looks like rest has done wonders for Mason Crosby's abdominal strain. He kicked about 20 field goals on Friday and said he feels fine, although he didn't do any kickoffs, which would put more strain on his injury."It feels loose," Crosby said. "I didn't have any problems out there. It just got a little fatigued, so I rested it and now I feel good."* Rookie defensive lineman B.J. Raji made it through the entire week of practice as a full participant after missing last week’s game with an ankle injury he sustained in the preseason finale, yet he was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report. McCarthy said it wasn't a given that Raji would play against the Bengals."I’m going to see how he responds from his treatment," McCarthy said. "I’ll watch the film and talk to (defensive coordinator) Dom (Capers) and (defensive line coach) Mike Trgovac (before deciding whether Raji would play)."* Kick returner Will Blackmon, who has been out since Aug. 22 with a quadriceps bruise, is expected to play Sunday. He was a full participant in practice all week and was listed as probable.* Receiver Greg Jennings (wrist) was limited Friday and listed as probable. He is expected to play.* Safety Atari Bigby (knee) and running back Brandon Jackson (ankle) have been ruled out.Our staff picks will be posted late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. I'd be suprised if any of us picks against the Packers this week. Also, if you haven't seen it yet (or you liked it so much you want to see it again), you can still watch Episode 2 of The Insiders.-- Rob Demovsky, rdemovsk@greenbaypressgazette.comhttp://twitter.com/RobDemovsky

Practice report: No Colledge

Starting left guard Daryn Colledge was not participating in the portion of today's practice that was open to reporters, leaving his status for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals in doubt.Colledge sustained a sprained foot on Thursday.Coach Mike McCarthy will address Colledge's status in a little more than an hour during his post-practice news conference. Also not practicing were running back Brandon Jackson (foot) and safety Atari Bigby (knee).Defensive lineman B.J. Raji (ankle) and cornerback/kick returner Will Blackmon (quad), both of whom missed last week's opener against the Bears, appeared to be full participants in practice, paving the way for them to be available for Sunday's game.-- Rob Demovsky, rdemovsk@greenbaypressgazette.comhttp://twitter.com/RobDemovsky

Colledge sprains foot in practice

Left guard Daryn Colledge sprained a foot in practice today and was added to the injury report.Coach Mike McCarthy said he doesn't believe it is a significant injury and that it's not the dreaded Lisfranc sprain, which can sideline a player for an extended period. However, Colledge's status for Sunday's game against Cincinnati is unclear. There were no other changes to the injury report.-- Tom Pelissero, tpelisse@greenbaypressgazette.comhttp://twitter.com/tompelissero
