Discussion: Carlos Delgado

The last time Carlos Delgado hit the open market, he signed a $52MM deal with the Florida Marlins. Five offseasons later, Delgado's in line for a considerably smaller deal and the Marlins are expected to spend more liberally. The Puerto Rican slugger is returning from hip surgery that may limit his ability to play the field. He'll face competition from free agent first basemen and designated hitters, most notably Adam LaRoche, Hideki Matsui and Vladimir Guerrero.Delgado has been a sli...

Orioles: Carlos Delgado?

I've been ruminating on Carlos Delgado since it was reported last week that the Orioles will be following his winter league performance to see if he might be a decent stopgap at first base next season.

My first reaction was pretty dismissive. We're talking about a developing team adding a 37-year-old player who was limited to fewer than 100 at-bats last year because of a hip injury. What kind of message does that send?

Mind you, that was my first reaction. My second reaction ...

As I see it there are four issues in play with Carlos Delgado, which makes it understandable that their torn over what direction to take.1) They are going to be hard pressed to replace a healthy Delgado's production in the middle of the line-up.2) At 37 y/o his first two seasons with the Mets were plagued with nagging injuries and last year he lost the entire season, can Carlos remain healthy enough to be a productive player.3) Since 2006 Delgado has been the unofficial captain of this te...

When Carlos Delgado was the only serious injury of the season and they believed that everyone would be returning sometime during the season, Audrey Huff was a name regularly linked to the Mets. But Huff ended up being traded to the Tigers, the Mets need a short time 1B and while they'd prefer a right handed platoon partner, at the right price Huff could be a solid answer. The Tigers have economic issues and despite trading for the veteran 1B they have decided not to pursue him.Huff is a 32 ...

Omar Minaya isn't ruling out bringing back Carlos Delgado, in Sept. it seemed like a fore gone conclusion that Delgado would not return. But the Mets need to keep all there options open, especially with their dire need for power and lets not forget how Pedro embarrassed them this year.Pedro looked washed up in 2008 as a Met, so Omar kept tabs on him over the winter but never seemed interested in bringing him back. Pedro went on to look great as a Phillie and even took the time to rub it in...

Beltran supports return of Delgado...

No surprise here, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado seemed to be close friends during their time together here in NY. So when asked if he thought Delgado should return, of course, Beltran said yes. Beltran was in town for a charity event, while answering questions from reporters he told them that he visited Delgado at home and the big slugger will be playing winter ball to prove his health. Here's what Beltran said about Delgado returning..."But Delgado is a guy, that if he's hea...

Note: I have enjoyed making small tributes/eulogies for various Mets when they leave - Marlon Anderson, Ramon Castro and Billy Wagner are some examples. Carlos Delgado filed for free agency and it seems unlikely, but not totally out of the question, that he will return to the Mets for a variety of reasons. What better way to "eulogize" Delgado than by channeling Sergeant Jay Landsm...

Delgado done, Reyes close to same...

The only reason Carlos Delgado was working so hard to return, was to audition for free agency and more then likely an American league team in need of a DH.As much as we need home run power it's simply too much of a risk for Omar to bring him back, especially in a make-it-or-break-it year. It's now being reported that Delgado will not return this season and has gone home for the off-season.While Jose Reyes situation isn't as clear cut, it does appear that his chances of returning t...

After suffering yet another setback with his hip injury, Carlos Delgado will most likely miss the remainder of the season.

Delgado could return for 2010

I warned yesterday that the Mets could lull themselves into bringing back Carlos Delgado as their power bat next year. I expected that if Delgado looked good in the last two weeks the Mets would be tempted to re-sign the aging slugger.Apparently it hasn't taken Delgado even getting on the field, after seeing him taking batting practice and the thought that he may come cheaper then some of the bigger name free agents, seems to have Omar thinking about Delgado returning next season."We...

At the start of the season it appeared that 2009 would most definitely be Carlos Delgado’s last season in the Big Apple. Well as we wrap of the final month of the season, Delgado appears to be as good as gone, especially after missing a majority of the season after undergoing hip surgery.
However, the idea [...]

Carlos Delgado was rehabbing in Florida, but that plan was put on hold after the 1B returned to NY and was diagnosed with a strained oblique. Delgado will miss a few weeks before he can continue his rehab, which almost ensures that he won't be traded prior to the Aug. 31st. deadline. This is why Delgado should not return, for the rest of his career he will be an injury risk and is now best suited for being a DH. Although, I'm concerned with how there going to replace his home run threa...

Good news on the injury front, both Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes are making progress towards returning. There is no time frame for either player to return but reports are, that they looked good during agility drills. Delgado is hitting in the batting cage and will report to PSL on Monday...Delgado took batting practice in an indoor cage for the first time since he had hip surgery May 19, and both he and Reyes went through agility drills before the Mets' win. Still, there's no set time...

Omar knew Carlos Delgado would go down ?

I have a real issue with the belief that Omar knew Carlos Delgado had a hip condition and may be lost to injury.First of all, I thought it was a good idea for the Mets to pick-up Delgado's option and flip him to an AL team looking for a DH ( Angels) but when Omar kept him, I really couldn't blame him since the contract was cheap for what he provided last year.
