Tim Brown: ‘I’ve Never Said Sabotaged the Game’

The Tim Brown-Bill Callahan saga continues.
Brown, who made headlines Monday when he accused the former Raiders coach of sabotaging his team’s chances in Super Bowl XXXVII, is now insisting that his comments were taken the wrong way.
“I’ve never said [Callahan] sabotaged the game,” Brown told the Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday. “That’s something that can never be proven. We can never go into the mind of Bill Callahan. …. I should have said we could have called it sabotage. It was a question, not a statement. You cannot prove it.”
The All-Pro wide receiver did not waver from his claim that Callahan switched Oakland’s game plan from once centered around bruising running backs Tyrone Wheatley and Zack Crockett to once that called for Rich Gannon to win the game with his arm. Gannon put on one of the worst performances ever by a quarterback in a Super Bowl (24-for-44, two touchdowns, five interceptions) and the Raiders were blown out by Tampa Bay.
Brown’s backtracking is strange because ...

Tim Brown, Jerry Rice accuse Bill Callahan of throwing Super Bowl; Others disagree

The Oakland Raiders were crushed 48-21 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego nearly 10 years ago. The game was one of the most lopsided in Super Bowl history, and now, almost 10 years later, accusations are surfacing that Bill Callahan may have thrown the big game.
The accusations first came from Hall of Fame wide receiver Tim Brown. Hall of Famer Jerry Rice agreed with Brown, while other former Raiders disagree.
We’ll start with the comments made by Brown over the weekend on SiriusXM NFL radio, as shared by Pro Football Talk.
“We get our game plan for victory on Monday, and the game plan says we’re gonna run the ball,” Brown said Saturday. “We averaged 340 [pounds] on the offensive line, they averaged 280 [on the defensive line]. We’re all happy with that, everybody is excited. [We] tell Charlie Garner, ‘Look, you’re not gonna get too many carries, but at the end of the day we’re gonna get a victory.
Tim Brown alleges Bill Callahan ‘sabotaged’ Raiders gameplan in Super Bowl XXXVII

It’s been 10 years since the Raiders got mollywhopped by the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl. That’s a long time to stew things over. I wonder what some former Raiders players would say if they had the chance to share their reflection with everybody else. From ESPN:
According to receiver Tim Brown, Jon Gruden’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers thrashed the Raiders 48-21 in Super Bowl XXXVII because Oakland was “sabotaged” by Bill Callahan, the team’s head coach at the time, who changed the game plan at the last minute.
Oh?
But yes, Raiders legend Tim Brown, who had one catch for nine yards in that game, his lone Super Bowl appearance, said over the weekend that Oakland lost the game because former Raiders head coach Bill Callahan, until today best known for this tirade, switched from a run-heavy gameplan to a pass-heavy gameplan less than two days before the game. From Pro Football Talk:
“We get our game plan for victory on Monday, and the game plan says we’re gonna run the ball,” Brown said Satur...

Jerry Rice Agrees With Tim Brown’s Belief That Bill Callahan Sabotaged Raiders in Super Bowl

It seems that the 2002 Raiders aren’t exactly seeing eye to eye 10 years after they made, and lost, the Super Bowl.
On Monday, Tim Brown told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he believed Bill Callahan sabotaged Super Bowl XXXVII because he didn’t like the Raiders’ organization, and because he was friends with Jon Gruden, the head coach of the Buccaneers, Oakland’s opponent in the Super Bowl. While Bill Romanowski, Rich Gannon, Zack Crockett and an anonymous player disagreed with Brown’s assertion, Jerry Rice was on the same page as his fellow wide receiver.
Rice was on NFL Live on ESPN on Tuesday and he reinforced much of what Brown had said. Rice said Callahan changed the game plan from being run heavy to pass heavy the Friday before the Super Bowl. He also said that Barrett Robbins, the center who disappeared the Saturday before the Super Bowl, was the most upset over the change. Rice believed that the game plan change is what caused Robbins to leave for Mexico because of the added pressu...

Brown: There were many issues with Callahan

Former nine-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Tim Brown says he doesn't understand why he is getting so much attention for his controversial comments about his former head coach and current Cowboys offensive coordinatoroffensive line coach Bill Callahan.

Brown said he was simply defending former teammate Barret Robbins when he suggested Saturday on Sirius XM NFL Radio that Callahan sabotaged the 2003 Super Bowl by changing the offensive gameplan a few days before. The Raiders lost that game 48-21 to the Buccaneers.

According to Brown, on the Friday before the game, Callahan switched the gameplan from a run-heavy attack to one that would ask quarterback Rich Gannon to throw 60 times.

Tuesday on the Ben and Skin Show on 103.3 KESN-FM in Dallas, Brown didn't change his story, instead, attempting to convince those listening that his comments were nothing new.

After all, Brown, a Woodrow Wilson High School graduate, was critical of Callahan during an interview on the same radio show in February.

NFL Rumors: Tim Brown suggests Oakland Raiders handed Super Bowl XXXVII to Buccaneers

A curious story has surfaced on the 10th anniversary of Super Bowl XXXVII, a game that featured the Oakland Raiders taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers completed dismantled the Raiders 48-21 on their way to the franchise’s first World Championship. Did the Oakland Raiders coaching staff sabotage their game plan in order to hand the Super Bowl to the Buccaneers?
Former Oakland Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown recently suggested as much in a recent radio interview. Brown suggests that at the last minute, the Raiders changed up their offensive game plan, from a run heavy plan to a pass oriented scheme, throwing the ball 60 times. The former Heisman Trophy winner suggested that head coach Bill Callahan might have made the change to guarantee a victory for his friend, Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden.
Brown points out that the Raiders were going to go with a run heavy package because their offensive line averaged 340 pounds while the Buccaneers defensive front averaged 280....

According to former Raiders receiver Tim Brown, who appeared in an interview on Sirius XM on Saturday, the team believed they could easily win Super Bowl XXXII by running the ball down the throats of the Bucs. The Raiders' offensive line was much bigger than the Bucs, and the Raiders boasted a backfield duo of Charlie Garner and Tyrone Wheatly, not to mention one of the best short yardage backs in the game, Zack Crockett.
