Philadelphia Eagles: McNabb Finally Has Wide Receivers Competing For Spots

Throughout his career, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb has faced his fair share of criticism.
When the Eagles selected him with the No. 2 pick overall in 1999, he was booed by fans who wanted Ricky Williams instead. His controversy with Rush Limbaugh shed light on the issue of African-American quarterbacks in the league. Even this past November, he dealt with criticism after head coach Andy Reid benched him in the second half during a 36-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Worst Man Drafted Tournament: South Region Round One

This is probably the weakest of the four regions, but the “Dirty” South still is a lot of fun. In fact, you’ll have a hard time finding such a collection of dysfunctional running backs, woman beaters and gun lovers anywhere else.

Rutgers' Jordan Brooks does his Rapunzel Impression! VIDEO!

One fashion trend the 2000s will be remembered for is dreadlocks. Think Lil Wayne. Think Ricky Williams. In the world of football, fans shirk at the painful idea of how long hair could become a liability. Luckily, Rutgers' RB Jordan Brooks showed us the painful reality?a 62 yard run that ends with a touchdown prevented mostly by his flowing locks.

Ricky Williams: What Could Have Been

Ricky Williams has had anything but a smooth career, but certainly an impressive one. While his first 3 seasons with the Saints were nothing to write home about, he soon came into his own. In his forth season, first with the Dolphins, he led the NFL in rushing with 1,853 yards.

Before the start of the 2004 season everything fell apart. Williams failed his third drug test, and he then decided to retire from football. During that season that he had off, he studied at the California College of Ayurveda.

Things then got a little out of control in the Williams situation. He came back to football for the 2005 season, only to fail a fourth drug test and have to sit out the whole 2006 season. From there he went up to Canada to play for the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. Ricky returned to the Dolphins in week 12 of the 2007 season only to sustain an injury that would sideline him for the rest of that year.

But this season, Ricky is sitting atop the Miami Dolphins depth chart and will be the opening day starter for the Fins. While most people may think of Ricky as some pothead running back, he's nothing short of impressive. He has basically missed three consecutive seasons and still has the ability to start for an NFL team. Let's not forget that Bill Parcels is also very impressed with his running back. If Williams didn't miss those seasons he would be regarded as one of the top 5 backs in the league…Definitely a first round fantasy choice.

The Ricky Williams situation speaks volumes of the type of agent and person Leigh Steinberg is. Through the trials and tribulations, Steinberg remained by Ricky's side and didn't give up on him. He's a huge reason why Williams is even in the NFL. Let's not forget to mention that he just negotiated a new incentive laden one year extension.

Ricky Signs New Deal

The Miami Dolphins brass have seen fit to reward Ricky Williams for an off-season worth of trust agreeing to a 1 year extension through 2009.? While there is no signing bonus attatched to the deal, his base salary of just over 780,000 is expected to increase significantly.
It is unlikely that anything

Playing with Ricky Williams and Chad Pennington...

We played the Dolphins last weekend and lost. We definitely did not play to our standards. I know it's preseason but it taught me that there are really no rollover games in the NFL, not like in college. They were 1-15 last year, but they have good players on their team who play hard just like our guys do. I have to admit, I was a little in awe standing on the sideline watching some of the Dolphins players like Ricky Williams and Chad Pennington. Those are guys I grew up watching. It was weird seeing them in the same game. Neither of those guys were in the game when I got in.

I played the whole 4th quarter on defense and the entire second half on special teams. I finished with 6 tackles. I called Keith before the game and told him he wasn't going to outplay me this week. He had seven tackles in his first game so I had to come through. He just laughed. It's the same competition we've had at USC and through OTAs, mini camp and now the games. Every day we're competing against each other. All I know is he better come out and do something this week, he's not going to want to get outplayed two weeks in a row.

Great Moments in Cross-Dressing in Sports

A lawsuit against Oscar De La Hoya has been dropped after pictures of him in fishnets and heels have proven to be fakes. The most striking aspect of the story is not that it happened, but that it cross-dressing seems to be a theme in the world of sports, from rookie hazing to flight attendant chomping. Here are some of our favorite cross-dressing incidents in sports.

1) Oscar De La Hoya - Okay, they're faked. But it led to some great jokes about how he'll always be the Golden Boy and never the Golden Man.

2) Dennis Rodman - This was mostly a publicity stunt, but we later learned that The Worm also has a fascination with men's nipples.

Okay. So long as he never did it again, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Best two out of three?

Sigh....

3) Ricky Williams - Thank goodness it turned out this was the weirdest thing Ricky was in to.

4) Marv Albert - [Photo not avilable...YEEEEEEEESSSS!]

Artist's rendering...

5) Martina Navratilova - One of these must be cross-dressing, right?

Interview With The Agent: Leigh Steinberg

This is not your standard Interview With The Agent post. On April 15, 2008, I got an interesting email from a name I had never seen before. It included an offer for a one-on-one interview with Leigh Steinberg…yes, THE LEIGH STEINBERG. Usually, we go out looking for top agents to spend a few minutes answering some emailed questions and post them up here under the Interview With The Agent category. This time, Leigh had his people contact me to see if I was willing to talk to Leigh for twenty minutes about the changes in sports business to support concussion health. After taking 8 seconds to consider, I calmly agreed to the interview, and the rest is history. This past Wednesday, that scheduled twenty minute interview turned into a conversation that lasted over eighty minutes. Don't worry, there was no way that I could hold a conversation about concussions for that long. I got as much information about the sports agent side of Leigh as I could, until he finally said, "I thought we were going to be talking about concussions." Anyway, before you read the interview, I must say that it was a pleasure of mine to talk with Leigh for such a long period of time. He is humble, soft-spoken, and a truly charming individual. He may quite be the only person on this planet capable of representing Ricky Williams.

I started off by asking Leigh if he would mind fielding some non-concussion-related questions and gradually make our way towards the topic. He complied.

Time To Build A Sports Reporter Division

Here at SportsAgentBlog.com - I Want to be a Sports Agent, we have covered many non-traditional ways that an interested person can break into the sports agent industry. Some categories discussed include representing video gamers, bowlers, and bull riders. After reading a recent New York Times article on sportswriters, I am beginning to think that some of the top sports writers may soon be calling on sports agents to negotiate their next big contract [The Top Player in This League? It May Be the Sports Reporter].

There is a huge brain drain occurring at the old media entities. Newspapers like the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and USA Today are seeing their best writers leave for more lucrative jobs writing at ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. The Washington Post has seen three of its sports writers leave for a higher paying job in less than a two year period. Last month, USA Today lost four of its NBA writers [USA Today Doesn't Care About the NBA]. Why stay around at the dying old guard when you can ask ESPN to pay you Rick Reilly type money ($3 million a year)?

The NYT article mentions that media entities are getting into bidding wars over the top sports journalists. The bold print should ring opportunity in the minds of agents. When there are multiple offers and a lot of money is on the table, the scene is set for a sports agent to enter into the negotiations. Leigh Steinberg equates the situation to "free agency for sports journalists." Let's just hope that these journalists fare better in the long run than Ricky Williams.

The San Fransisco Chronicle just cut half its staff, the Washington Post is losing strong columnists left and right, USA Today is offering buyouts, and the NYT is allowing its writers to post stories that document the newspaper industry's downfall. Meanwhile, sports journalists have the opportunity to make more money than ever. It is just a matter of time before agents become a staple of the negotiations for up and coming journalists.

Dad's Corner: Any Given Saturday

There should be a new movie out soon called "Any Given Saturday". Never in my memory have I seen teams ranked 1 & 2 in college rankings go down like this year. So who will be in the championship game? Send your predictions in and I will post what the majority thinks next week.

Heeeeeeeees Baaaaaaaack. Ricky Williams sans hair will play next week. The question is will he be featured in a trade for a draft pick? Or will The Fins give him a third chance? I believe they will trade for a draft pick. Cam Cameron is finally doing what he should have done 3 games ago. He will start the Rookie John Beck this Sunday. The press and even the owner was putting the heat on. Talking about the Heat

Vick not suspended?

Ok after the whole ordeal with Pacman Vick should see the field for 2 more seasons. I am not stating he is guilty but the image of the NFL has bee tarnished further due to his actions. The commissioner stated that is what the punishment would be based off of. Vick has been in the media everywere there was almost a whole week to were you could not find anyother football news without reading about Vick. Sadly enough it took the passing of a great man in Bill Walsh to change this media craze. Vick in my opinion should be joining Ricky Williams in CFL the next couple of seasons. The sad thing is his defense is he didnt know what was going on........at his property......that he never told his teamates about. Like the other hoodlums could afford what they had going on. With all the claims that Vick was involved the NFL should release him with the oppurtunity of reinstatement in a few seasons.
