Albany Devils 4, Connecticut Whale 3 (SO)

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, February 5, 2013 - On a night where Connecticut and the parent-team New York Rangers made some personnel swaps, the Devils bested both clubs Tuesday; the Whale suffered a loss at the hands of Albany, 4-3 in a shootout, while the Rangers fell to New Jersey, 3-1.

Brandon Mashinter was boomeranged to New York; he left for the Big Apple with J.T. Miller, and returned to Hartford with Benn Ferriero two days later without seeing any NHL ice time.

The first shot of Tuesday’s game got Albany on the board, when Brandon Burlon got the puck to Matt Anderson at the point. After two quick steps to the middle, Anderson wound and fired the puck over the stick side shoulder of starting goaltender Jason Missiaen for Anderson’s eighth of the year. The goal went under review, but would ultimately stand for a 1-0 Devils lead 27 seconds into the matchup.

Missiaen would make a glove save on Chad Wiseman shortly thereafter, but when Kyle Jean sat for holding ...

Islanders beat Devils in OT

Brad Boyes scored a power-play goal on a rebound at 2:01 of overtime and the New York Islanders beat the Devils 5-4 on Thursday night, handing New Jersey its third straight loss in overtime.

John Tavaras scored twice, and Keith Aucoin and Mark Streit once for the Islanders, who avenged an opening-night loss to the Devils. Evgeni Nabokov made 28 saves for New York, including a big one on an early Devils power play in overtime.

Adam Henrique Steve Bernier, Ryan Carter and Henrik Tallinder tallied for the Devils, who three times rallied to tie it. Martin Brodeur made 30 saves, but had the puck stolen from him by Boyes, setting up the game winner.

Boyes banged in Frans Nielsen's rebound, while Tavares also picked up an assist.

Nabokov and Brodeur both came up big early in the overtime, which was witnessed by the Devils' fourth sellout in as many games. Nabokov stopped defenseman Marek Zidlicky late in a power play that started late in the third period.

Tallinder picked up a cross-checking penalty wit

Islanders 5, Devils 4

NEWARK, N.J. -- Brad Boyes scored a power-play goal with 2:59 left in overtime, giving the New York Islanders a 5-4 victory over the New Jersey Devils Thursday night at the Prudential Center. After Devils defenseman Henrik Tallinder went off for a cross check, the Islanders put the pressure on during the power play. Boyes scored the game-winner off a mad scramble in front. The victory enabled the Islanders to push their record to 4-2-1 overall, while the Devils fell to 3-0-3, still not losing a game in regulation this season. John Tavares tallied two goals and an assist and Mark Streit and Keith Aucoin added one goal each for the Islanders. The Devils received goals from unlikely sources, all four coming by players scoring their first goal of the season. Tallinder scored his first goal in almost two years, while Steve Bernier, Ryan Carter and Adam Henrique, playing his first game after returning from a thumb injury, all scoring for New Jersey. Evegni Nabokov collected 28 ...

Extra time decides fate of the first meeting between Bruins & Devils

Jared Wickerham/Getty Images
The New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins faced off at TD Garden Tuesday night for the first of three meetings between the Eastern Conference foes. There were a few firsts and even a hot dog made an appearance by a man who looks like he would never waste an edible item in his life. There was excitement leading up to this game. Both teams are playing amazing hockey, sitting atop of the Eastern Conference, didn’t have a regulation loss under their belts, and took to the ice to really make a statement going forward.
It was certainly the Devils biggest test of the season and probably the same for the Bruins.
I never expected a high scoring game and clearly a 2-1 victory in a shootout verified that. The Devils big guns aren’t quite in the zone yet and the same goes for the Bruins. Both teams are getting points from all over the roster. The pace to the game was great, plenty of action in each end, and the Devils certainly cleaned up their act when the puck drop...

Bruins 2, Devils 1 (SO)

BOSTON – Brad Marchand scored in Round 6 and Tuukka Rask stopped the last five shots of the shootout to give the Bruins a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. The Bruins, improving to 5-0-1 with their second win in as many nights, forced overtime when Nathan Horton scored with 4:05 left in regulation before the teams played a scoreless five extra minutes. Both goalies then gave up a goal on the first shootout attempt but the competition went six rounds before Marchand got the puck between the legs of veteran backup goalie Johan Hedberg and Rask stopped defenseman Marek Zidlicky to give the Bruins their second shootout win of the young season. The Bruins have earned at least one point in the first six games for the first time since starting 5-0-1 in 1970-71. Rask improved to 10-7 in career shootouts, while Hedberg, playing in a game for the first time since last April, fell to 23-9. The Bruins, who haven't allowed a third-period goal t...

Connecticut Whale 5, Albany Devils 2

Albany, NY, October 24, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale earned their first win in five games on the season Wednesday night at the Times Union Center, scoring five straight goals after giving up the first goal of the game, on the way to a 5-2 victory over the Albany Devils.

Brandon Segal had a goal and an assist to lead the Whale, J.T. Miller, Tommy Grant and Andrew Yogan all scored their first goals of the season, and Kyle Jean also scored. Chad Kolarik had two assists, and Jason Missiaen made 31 saves to get his first career AHL win. Mike Hoeffel and Jacob Josefson scored for Albany.

The Devils struck first, with a goal late in the first period. Hoeffel fought off Sean Collins’ check in the slot and stuffed a loose puck past the stick side of Missiaen at 17:44, after Matt Anderson’s shot from near the blue line was blocked.

The Whale, however, would dominate the second period on the scoreboard, tallying three times against Devil goaltender Keith Kinkaid (21 saves).

On the Farm: NHL Experience Starting to Show for Albany Devils

It was with the help of three players that spent the season in New Jersey last year, that the Albany Devils were able to defeat the Worchester Sharks to earn their first win of the season. Adam Larsson, Jacob Josefson and Adam Henrique tallied a combined five points on Saturday night’s 4-0 win.
The Devils went into Saturday’s game winless in their first two contests and received little production on the score sheet from players like 2012 Rookie of the Year candidate, Adam Henrique, who was held to just two shots in as many games to begin his season back in the AHL.
With help from Harri Pesonen, who signed a one-year contract over the summer with the Devils, Henrique was able to find the back of the net to get the Devils on the board in the first period. Pesonen went on to score a goal as well for his first of the season before Jacob Josefson finished the game with a short handed goal in the third for his second of the game. Defenseman Adam L...

Whale Fall To Albany 3-2 In A Shootout

Albany Devils 3, Connecticut Whale 2 (SO)
By Brian Ring
Albany, NY, October 14, 2011 – The Connecticut Whale fell to the Albany Devils Friday night, 3-2 in a shootout, at the Times-Union Center. Andre Deveaux and Carl Hagelin both scored for the Whale and Kris Newbury assisted on both goals, to give him five points in three games (3-2-5).
Joe Whitney and Matt Anderson scored for Albany, who received a game-winning shootout goal from Matt Taormina to seal the come-from-behind victory.
“We stopped going to them,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. “I didn’t like the way we started the [third] period. We stopped forcing the issue or attacking them and I thought we made some plays that were a little bit lax.”
The first period did not see either goaltender face very many quality chances, but Deveaux helped the Whale get the game’s first power-play opportunity when he was taken down by Mike Sislo at 18:33. With newcomer Brendan Bell and Newbury quarterbacking the power-play, Deveaux def...
