Connecticut Whale 3, Springfield Falcons 2

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, January 26, 2013 - The Connecticut Whale are glad to be home. After playing six straight on the road in mid-January, Connecticut returned to Hartford and won their third in a row Saturday against the division-rival Springfield Falcons by a count of 3-2. In addition to a goal from Andrew Yogan, the Whale got scores from blueliners Blake Parlett and Mike Vernace, and 26 saves from Cam Talbot.

Springfield took a while to get their game together in the early minutes. It took all of six seconds for the Falcons to earn their first penalty, when Tomas Kubalik was called for roughing.

The first power play unit applied early pressure and word on the Falcons’ penalty kill unit, and Yogan scored his second of the year just two seconds after the penalty expired. Logan Pyett fired a shot from the point and Micheal Haley was lurking in the slot. He managed to redirect the puck and hit the post, and Yogan was standing at the ready. Scoring first proved va...

Connecticut Whale 4, Portland Pirates 1

Portland, ME, January 19, 2013 – Chad Kolarik and Kris Newbury had a goal and an assist apiece, and Jason Missiaen made 32 saves, to lead the Connecticut Whale to a 4-1 win over the Portland Pirates Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Three of the Whale’s goals were on special teams, as the power play was 2/3 and Connecticut also scored a shorthander.

“Huge bounce-back game, we needed those two points, especially after the loss (Friday) night (a 4-2 defeat in Springfield), where we didn’t play very well,” Kolarik said. “We showed a lot of emotion tonight and we worked their defensemen down low, and the two power-play goals were huge for us, to get the power play going is good.”

The Whale started slowly in the game, as Portland got 11 of the first 13 shots, and the Pirates got on the scoreboard first at 8:49 of the opening period.

Brett Hextall fed a pass across the slot to Ethan Werek on the right-wing side, and Werek was able to cut in and put a s...

Connecticut Whale 6, Portland Pirates 1

Portland, ME, January 15, 2013 – Kris Newbury scored two goals, and Cam Talbot made 29 saves, as the Connecticut Whale rolled to a 6-1 win over the Atlantic Division-leading Portland Pirates Tuesday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Portland had won eight straight home games, tying a franchise record, and 13 of its previous 15 overall. The Whale won despite being outshot 30-22, and scored two shorthanded goals.

“I thought our ‘D’ played good, we made a good first pass and we didn’t spend much time in our end,” Newbury said. “(Talbot) played great for us again and we were able to get a couple of goals.

“It’s a lot easier when we’re not playing as much in our end, holding on to the puck in theirs. I thought we did a great job from our D getting the puck through to the net, and we had guys in front tipping pucks, getting lots of traffic.”

The only goal of the first period was a shorthander by the Whale, and the second goal in three games for Kelsey Tessier

Whale notes: Hrivik out with concussion, Whale sign Shayne Wiebe

Marek Hrivik, who many speculated would get a long look at camp (well, under normal camp) is out with a concussion. This could be one of the reasons why Hrivik may not be invited to the Rangers mini-camp this year. However with camps set to occur during the AHL season, and lasting only a week, it is unlikely that the Rangers would call up the majority of Connecticut’s roster. Chris Kreider and Matt Gilroy are the only two who have left the Whale at the moment, and there’s no reason to believe anyone else will leave for mini camp.
In other news, the Whale have officially signed forward Shayne Wiebe to an AHL contract. Wiebe had been with the Whale on a PTO since November 17, when he was called up from the Greenville Road Warriors. In 14 games since his call up, Wiebe has a pair of assists and two PIMs. While with the Road Warriors, Wiebe had a line of 7-5-12 and 10 PIMs in 12 games.

Whale Sign Shayne Wiebe to AHL Contract

HARTFORD, January 9, 2013: Connecticut Whale general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the Whale has signed forward Shayne Wiebe to an American Hockey League contract.

Wiebe had been with the Whale on a Professional Tryout (PTO) agreement since coming up from the Greenville Road Warriors of the ECHL November 17. In 14 AHL games this year, the 6-0, 190-pound rookie has two assists, two penalty minutes and 21 shots on goal. In 12 ECHL games with Greenville, Wiebe has notched seven goals and five assists for 12 points, along with 10 PIM.

A 22-year-old native of Brandon, Manitoba, Wiebe played 12 games with the AHL’s St. John’s IceCaps last season (0-4-4, 2 PIM) before finishing the year with the University of New Brunswick (5-7-12, 24 PIM in 11 GP). Prior to turning pro, he played four full seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Kamloops Blazers and Brandon Wheat Kings. Wiebe’s first pro action was one game with the Whale in 2010-11, following the conclusio...

Connecticut Whale 2, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 0

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, January 6, 2013 - After watching Cam Talbot pick up his first shutout of the season in Hartford on Friday, Jason Missiaen decided he wanted one too. Supported by two goals from Kyle Jean, the Connecticut Whale skated to a 2-0 victory over the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, despite being outshot by a margin of 35-18. The Whale earned five points over a three-game weekend, to gain ground in the Northeast Division standings.

Brandon Segal set the tone in the first 90 seconds when he delivered a hard check to Dominik Uher behind the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goal. Christian Thomas followed suit and dumped Bobby Farnham on the way to the net minutes later.

In his eighth start of the year, Missiaen was tested early and often. Shots from Paul Thompson, Philippe Dupuis, and Warren Peters were all turned aside in the first five minutes.

Although Missiaen saw most of the rubber early on, the Whale put together some quality plays. Kris Newbury pulled...

Around the Farm: Offense fails Connecticut again

Providence Bruins 3, Connecticut Whale 1
By Wil Goldsholl
Hartford, CT, December 22, 2012 – Chris Bourque’s third-period goal was the difference Saturday night at the XL Center, as the Providence Bruins, Boston’s top affiliate, came to Hartford for Military Appreciation Night and tipped the Connecticut Whale 3-1, advancing to 15-10-0-2 and moving ahead of the Worcester Sharks for second place in the Atlantic Division.
In the opening minutes of the game, Providence and Connecticut were testing the water. Neither squad came on too aggressively and as a result the chances were few and far between. The first quality opportunity of the game went to the Whale on a Kris Newbury saucer pass directed for Marek Hrivik; the chance would go by the boards.
Chris Kreider drew interference on Lane MacDermid at 4:19 behind Providence goaltender Michael Hutchinson’s net, and a power play ensued. Connecticut again came close, but failed to hit the net when Matt Gilroy let a one-timer fly into traffi...

Here’s the press release from Connecticut’s 4-3 loss to Albany last night.
Albany Devils 4, Connecticut Whale 3
By Wil Goldsholl
The Connecticut Whale went head to head with the Albany Devils for the second time in a week at the XL Center in Hartford on Friday. Despite an extremely unfavorable shot count, the Whale hung around late in to the game, only to fall 4-3 to their surging division rival.
The Whale first responded to the Devils’ trap defense by “leading from the back”, as the expression goes. Mike Vernace, Sam Klassen, Logan Pyett, and Matt Gilroy all took their share of opportunities from the blueline in the early goings of the first period.
It was the starting forwards, however, that put the Whale on the board first. Kelsey Tessier fed the puck along the wall to Micheal Haley behind the net. After a brief scrum Haley laid the puck ahead of the short-side post intended for Tessier. Instead, the puck found its way to Ryan Bourque who, while falling, was able to slip it bet...

CT Whale
The CT Whale announced their training camp roster Tuesday and it is much larger than expected but also because of the NHL lockout missing a few guys who might have been invited to tryout.

Coach Ken Germander and his staff will have an older more experienced roster this year but that is not a bad thing as those veterans will be able to help the younger prospects adapt to the professional level. Camp opens this Sunday at the Ranger's training center in Tarrytown.

The roster

Goal: Bryan Hince, Jason Missiaen, Scott Stajcer, Cameron Talbot

Defense: Sean Collins, Steven Delisle, Kyle Haines, Colten Hayes, Brent Henley, Sebastien Piche, Sam Klassen, Dylan McIlrath, Jyri Niemi, Blake Parlett, Logan Pyett, Mike Vernace

Forwards: Matthew Bissonnette, Ryan Bourque, Andrew Courtney, Ryan Flanigan, Tommy Grant, Micheal Haley, Danny Hobbs, Marek Hrivik, Kyle Jean, Jordie Johnston, Chad Kolarik, Chris Kreider, J.T. Miller, Kris Newbury, Scott Pitt, Brandon Segal, Kelsey Tessier, Nicolas Trem
