The 2008 NL Rookie of the Year is coming off a horrible season but is Jim Hendry shopping his catcher? According to a report from Baseball Prospectus on the eve of the GM Meetings in Chicago, "Catching has become an increasingly difficult position for teams to fill, yet there are some interesting names floating as trade possibilities : the Pirates' Ryan Doumit, the Rays' Dioner Navarro, the Rangers' Jarrod Saltalamacchia and the Cubs' Geovany Soto."

After a two hour and thirty-two minute rain delay, Thursday night's game between the Cubs and Pirates was cancelled due to inclement weather. Finally, someone is talking a bit about Ryan Doumit's benching. Today, his agent denied that Doumit's benching was pouting-related, denied that Doumit's been dogging it since the trade deadline, and said that Doumit loves Pittsburgh and John Russell. In the midst of the Pirates' mind-blowing 19th consecutive loss at Milwaukee last night, manager John Russell benched catcher Ryan Doumit after 4 1/2 innings. Details on the incident are somewhat vague, but at the very least there appears to be a bit of legs to this rift, hence Doumit's absence from tonight's starting lineup.

The 28-year old oft-injured catcher, who's never played more than 116 games in a season, was hitting .219 with 8 HR and 26 RBI in 49 games this season. He will be replaced in the lineup by Jason Jaramillo, who promises to be on his best behavior.

Early web speculation of the incident has centered around Doumit's continued dislike of the Pirates' trading flurry this year, but if that's truly the case, it's truly pathetic. If Doumit is yearning to get out of Pittsburgh, causing a distraction is not a good way to enhance your trade value. Ask Brandon Marshall.

I suppose we all should've seen something like this coming after the house-cleaning that the front office did last month, but last night something triggered in Ryan Doumit and caused John Russell to bench him mid-game. Russell is refusing to talk to anyone about it, but from the quotes given he sounds about as pissed as he's ever been as Pirates' manager.
