Predicting the 2013/14 Washington Huskies basketball starting five

Projected starters for next season.
In-between transfers, graduates, and incoming recruits, University of Washington Men’s basketball’s starting squad next year is up in the air.
Here’s the most likely starting five for next year, with the potential challenger at each position.
Point Guard
Starter: Andrew Andrews
Challenger: Nigel Williams-Goss

This was a tough pick, but redshirt sophomore Andrew Andrews gets the nod over incoming freshman Nigel Williams-Goss.
After a redshirt year, Andrews put up around eight points, two assists and three rebounds in around 25 minutes a game in 2012-2013. The Oregon product has a tight handle and is cat-quick.
Williams-Goss is the highest profile recruit Washington is bringing in, and he will see major minute; but I think it is unlikely Lorenzo Romar starts a true freshman at point guard over a returner.
Williams-Goss has size, smarts and scoring ability. He is a high-character

Beach's Bits

While the seniors struggle, Andrew Andrews' inspired play in a breakthrough performance against ASU was a nod to the great Husky guards of the past. During a fading season season like the one Washington fans are enduring now, it's standard practice to pick apart both coaches and players as fans and media alike vent frustration while trying to understand where things went wrong.

Washington 96, Arizona St. 92

Aziz N'Diaye converted a three-point play off an offensive rebound with 34 seconds left, Andrew Andrews led Washington with 20 points off the bench and the Huskies held off Arizona State 96-92 on Saturday night despite 32 points from Sun Devils' freshman Jahii Carson.

The duo of N'Diaye and Shawn Kemp Jr. dominated the interior for Washington (13-9, 5-4 Pac-12), but no rebound or basket was bigger than N'Diaye tapping Scott Suggs' miss to keep the play alive and scoring while being fouled by Jordan Bachynski. The 45 percent free-throw shooter then converted the three-point play.

C.J. Wilcox added a pair of free throws after Carrick Felix missed a 3-pointer, but Carson hit a 3-pointer for Arizona State (17-4, 6-3) and Washington committed a turnover on the inbound with 13 seconds left. Carson drove to the rim but his shot was altered by N'Diaye and came up short.

Wilcox added two more free throws to clinch the victory that snapped Washington's four-game losing streak.

Overachievers and underachievers for Washington’s basketball team

Signs of rebuild are showing
The University of Washington men’s basketball team could be called a lot of things this year, but one thing they are not, is consistent.
Sitting at 12-8, the Dawgs were looking to be on a decent pace for a top half of the conference finish, until it all fell apart against the Utes.
It only gets harder from here, and their 4-3 conference record as it stands right now is looking more like where this team should be.
So, with that in mind, I want to take a look at some overachieving players, and even an underachieving player to boot.
CJ Wilcox
There were two players who needed to step it up this year after the departures of Tony Wroten and Terrence Ross.
One of those was CJ Wilcox.
So far, Wilcox has held up his side of the bargain, leading the Huskies in scoring in 14 of their 20 games so far this season, including a team high 28 in the loss to powerhouse Ohio State.
A swing man by nature, Wilcox has the best pure shot on this young team.
He has single handily kept this team as goo

2012/13 Washington Huskies basketball first month recap

Trouble Brewing?
To say the Washington Huskies have had a lackluster start to their 2012/2013 basketball season would be an understatement.
Coming off of a year that saw them win the Pac-12 Conference (though they would be eliminated in Round 1 of the Pac-12 Tournament and fall outside of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament), many believed the Huskies would be at least as talented as they were last season. And though there is still plenty of basketball to play (conference play has yet to start), early struggles this season have been rather disheartening for many Husky fans across the Northwest.
Should Washington continue their lackluster and inconsistent play throughout the rest of the season, it’s hard to imagine the Huskies being in the thick of things when it comes to selecting teams for the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Washington currently finds themselves with a record of 8-4, their most defining moment coming against Seattle University when they kept bragging rights to the City of Seatt

Washington

2011-12: Record 24-11 overall, 14-4 in Pac 12 (1st)

When the time a regular season champion in a BCS conference didn’t make the NCAA tournament? Well that happened to the Huskies despite going 14-4 in the Pac 12. Their weak non-conference schedule hurt them. Still head coach Lorenzo Romar won his third Pac 12 coach of the Year award. As for this year’s team they lose their top two scorers to the NBA, but they return there next three leading scorers and get back a key player from injury.

Huskies Dominate, Get Dominated, Decide Winning Is More Fun 84-73 (OT)

Initial (Over)Reactions

Washington fans got to see just about every side of the Husky's tonight. UW, despite playing only seven guys, finished with a gutsy 84-73 win in overtime against a streaky Big East foe. The Huskies raced out to a big lead with a 17-0 run in the first eight minutes, aided by 8 points and 2 assists by a very confident Abdul Gaddy during Washington outburst. UW continued their strong play and went into the half up 49-33. This was an incredible side of the Huskies. Washington was swarming defensively, jumping into the passing lanes and picking up 17 points off turnovers. Abdul Gaddy and Andrew Andrews looked very confident handling the ball. The confidence spread throughout the court on the offensive end, as Husky players were able to knock down jumpers and a run a reasonably effective high-post offense.

UW went into tentative and awkward mode in the second half. This allowed Seton Hall to attain a flow to their offense and resulted in the game being ...

A Bad Sign? Washington Huskies hoops struggle early

Head Scratcher
Ask 10, 50 100, or maybe even a thousand people and chances are slim that any of them would know a single thing about the Great Danes of Albany, let alone where the University of Albany is.
On Tuesday evening, the Great Danes opened eyes of NCAA fans and Huskies faithful with a 63-62 upset of the Washington Huskies, a PAC-12 team, at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Was it really an upset though? Or is this something that could be the norm this season for Lorenzo Romar‘s club? It is widely known that the Huskies roster is void of superstar talent and leadership. Yes they have a number of experienced players, in terms of their duration on campus, but that does not necessarily equate to being a leader.
Talent? Yes there is C.J. Wilcox and potentially Andrew Andrews and Abdul Gaddy, but if Wilcox has an off night, as he did on Tuesday when he went only made five of his 15 shots, who is ready to step up?
What happened on Tuesday night against Albany has many fans wondering what to expect from

Editor's Note: We are pleased to have Riley Peschon of "Welcome to Romarville" back for Huskies basketball coverage again this season. Be sure to check out his site as well for tons of UW content: welcometoromarville.blogspot.comInitial (Over)ReactionsThe first half of this basketball game was god-awful. I only watched the first half of this basketball game. Sigh. This is what happens when sports coincide with school. The Huskies turned the ball over 11 times and had just three assists on 12 baskets in the opening 20 minutes of their 2012-2013 campaign. Great way to start the season? No. Somehow the Dawgs were up two at half-time, despite Loyola guards being able to simply waltz to the hoop for layups against one-on-one defense on multiple occasions. This is what happens when I only watch one half! Apparently the second half kicked ass, so really I shouldn't be judging anyone or anything!

2012 Pac 12 Hoops – Northwest freshman who will turn heads this season

NW Pac 12 Standout Freshmen
Last season, there were three prominent freshmen in the PAC 12 that held court for the Northwest hoops teams.
Tony Wroten (Washington Huskies), DaVonte Lacy (Washington State Cougars) and Eric Moreland (Oregon State Beavers) were fixtures in the box scores of their respective schools. Whether it was on the offensive end (Wroten), defensive end (Mooreland) or doing a little bit of everything (Lacy), these three freshmen made the entire conference stand up and take notice.
This season, aside from the Oregon Ducks‘ incoming class, the Northwest freshmen may be flying under the radar to start the year.
However, if their teams are to have a chance to punch a ticket to the March dance, they will have to step up and play a big-time role.
