Edwar Cabrera, LHP Colorado | Placed on the 60-day disabled list in mid-February with shoulder impingement, Cabrera is now targeting an early June return to action (missed his original eligibility date). The 25-year old had a legit opportunity to earn a rotation spot out of spring training prior to the injury, this despite getting shelled in his two introductory big league starts in 2012: pitching in rough venues (Coors versus Washington and at Arizona) he allowed seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, walked seven, and 42.9% of his fly balls left the yard.
Cabrera and his trademark changeup wiped out the competition in his first four minor league campaigns, striking out 495 in 371 1/3 IP between the Dominican Summer League and Advanced A California. Last season he held opponents to a .195 BAA between AA Texas and AAA PCL and earned himself a Futures Game invite.
At 6’0 175 he doesn’t possess the prototype pitchers build or use his lower half to genera...

Beyond the Box Score: A Brief Q & A with Yankee Prospect Kelvin De Leon.

I had the pleasure of
getting to speak briefly with Tampa Yankees’ right fielder, Kelvin De Leon. He
was signed by the Yankees as an International Free Agent on the July 2nd
signing date in 2007. After a very impressive 2008 campaign in the Dominican
Summer League, he made his jump to the United States in 2009 as a member of the
Gulf Coast League Yankees. Always heralded for his big time power potential, De
Leon has had a steady path towards reaching his dreams of one day donning the
pinstripes of the New York Yankees. With a good showing next season, he can
make a jump to the Trenton Thunder of the Eastern League. He has the talent and
is desire and work ethic is second to none.

I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie Sugar, but it

Edwar Cabrera, Patrick Corbin: The Next Kris Medlen?

I often like to say that success is the result of talent meeting opportunity. That’s what makes Kris Medlen‘s breakout so surprising.
The talent has always been there. After a late start to his pitching career (he was converted to the position in college), Medlen has quickly mastered his craft. His control has always been impeccable, walking just 2.13 batters per nine innings in his minor league career, and in his first three years in the Braves’ minor league system he gained significant prospect status. By 2009 Medlen had earned a permanent spot on Atlanta’s 25-man roster…that is until his 2011 season ended after 2.1 innings.
Back at the beginning of the 2012 season, the Braves had one of the deepest rotations. Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, Mike Minor, and Brandon Beachy were sure to form one of the best rotations in the National League, and Tim Hudson was set to join that group just a few weeks into the season. Toss in a bevy of near-ready pitching prospects — Julio Teheran, Rand...

Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 2

Joe Saunders scattered three hits over seven strong innings and Chris Young homered to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.

Stephen Drew and Willie Bloomquist added RBI doubles and Miguel Montero had a two-run single for the Diamondbacks, winners of eight in a row at home.

Young also singled, walked twice, stole a base and scored a pair of runs.

Saunders (5-6) allowed only a single to reliever Josh Roenicke in the fifth and solo home runs to Michael Cuddyer in the fourth and sixth en route to his first win since June 10.

Saunders struck out nine and walked one.

Edwar Cabrera (0-2), who was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs earlier on Tuesday, lasted only 3 1-3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and four walks.

Colorado has lost three straight and six of seven.

Cuddyer's first homer gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead. He pulled the Rockies 4-2 with his second long ball.

The Diamondbacks answered in the bottom of the fourth whe

Nationals Trying For 50th Win Before All-Star Break Against Rockies

This weekend in D.C., the Washington Nationals have the chance to make history. For the first time since 2005 when they were made up of the remnants of the veteran Montreal Expos, the Nationals (48-32) could finish at or above the 50 game mark before the All-Star break. They will try to take those wins from the Colorado Rockies (31-51), who have already achieved the opposite feat: 50 losses before the All-Star Break.
Although the Nationals are 7-17 against the Rockies at home, it is clear that the 2012 Nationals are a drastically different team than the Nationals of the past. They are taking the National League by storm, and are hot off a four-game winning streak after sweeping what was the second-best team in the NL before they faced the dominance of the Nationals.
Ignite Your Offense-itude
Last week, the Rockies and the Nats combined to score 60 runs in a four-game series that they split. Since scoring their 35 runs off the Rockies and their sad pitching staff, the Nats offen...

Nationals 11, Rockies 5

Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven strong innings, Ryan Zimmerman and Tyler Moore both homered for the second straight game and the Washington Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 11-5 on Wednesday night.

Moore finished with three hits, Ian Desmond also went deep and Bryce Harper had two hits for the Nationals, who had another big outburst at the plate. Washington scored nine runs once in its first 71 games before accomplishing the feat on consecutive nights against the Rockies.

Marco Scutaro had two hits and two RBIs for Colorado, which matched the Nationals with 14 hits but lost for the 16th time in 20 games.

The Nationals battered Rockies pitching again, one day after setting club marks for hits and extra-base hits since moving to Washington. They roughed up starter Edwar Cabrera, who was making his major league debut after getting called up from Double-A.

Washington wasted no time introducing the 24-year-old to the big leagues. Moore hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run second inning, and Zimmerman

Coaching Rockies pitchers takes toll

After nine seasons and 72 more games into a 10th, Bob Apodaca had enough.

The job of being a pitching coach is challenging at any level. Toss in the wild and wacky world of Coors Field, and, well, Apodaca decided, enough was enough.

"I'm fried," he said.

Apodaca asked to be reassigned within the Colorado Rockies organization and was moved into the role of special assistant to general manager Dan O'Dowd. Initially, the assignment will be to step away from the game, clear his mind and get recharged.

"He said for a lack of a better word that he was tired and needed a break," O'Dowd said. "I will have him do some special-assignment work that I have been kicking around. And this will give him a chance to catch his breath."

Never an easy job, the role of Rockies pitching coach has become even more challenging in the past 18 months. It reached a point this season that the Rockies have decided to take a radical approach to mastering the mound at a mile high.

Lefty Cabrera is set to join Colorado rotation

Edwar Cabrera was in the Colorado Rockies' clubhouse Tuesday, and while no official announcement was made, the 24-year-old left-hander is expected to make his major league debut with a start Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. Manager Jim Tracy did say that Josh Outman would start Thursday rather than Wednesday. Thursday had been the turn for Alex White, but he was optioned to the minors Monday after another poor start. Tracy let Outman throw 92 pitches Saturday before pulling him after 4 2/3 innings at Texas during a six-run fifth inning that cut the Rockies' lead to 11-7. Colorado starters have been working with a 75-pitch limit in the team's four-man rotation, and Tracy will give Outman an extra day of rest before his next start. The Rockies need a starter to replace White, and they are turning to Cabrera, who is 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 15 starts for Class AA Tulsa, last pitching on Thursday. In 98 innings, Cabrera has allowed 65 hits and 23 walks while s...

The 2012 Minor League Report – Week 11

After leading the minor league in strikeouts in 2011, Edwar Cabrera has looked good in AA for the Colorado Rockies, though he has not been fanning hitters at the same rate with 68 strikeouts in 83 innings of work. He has posted a 3.25 ERA with a .192 batting average against thanks to a devastating changeup. He has been victimized by the long ball this season with 14 home runs allowed so he will need to cut down on that ration moving forward.
Right-handed starting pitcher Daniel Corcino was rated the top pitching prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization heading into 2012 and he has pitched just okay this season with a 3.77 ERA in 12 starts. Batters are hitting .252 against him and he currently sports a 1.42 WHIP thanks to 28 walks allowed in 62 innings of work. It looks like he will not be ready to make an impact until the end of the 2013 season.
Corcino’s new teammate Tony Cingrani is closing the gap after putting up stellar numbers in High-A with a 1.11 ERA in 56 2/3 innings w...

Can the Colorado Rockies get back to being respectable?

It's time to get the youth some experience in 2012.The Memorial Day doubleheader sweep of the Houston Astros by the Colorado Rockies gave the few remaining believers hope.In reality, however, this team has dug itself such a huge hole that the dream of climbing out of it and back into contention is extremely unrealistic. Crazy things happen sometimes, but just because it has happened to the Rockies twice in recent history doesn't mean it will happen again. The reason why this team won't climb all the way back into the race is simple. They don't have the starting pitching to make a run. The postseason runs in 2007 and 2009 came courtesy of phenomenal pitching. In '07 Ubaldo Jimenez, Manny Corpas and Franklin Morales were baptized by fire, probably in too much of a whirlwind to realize what they were doing at the big league level. In '09, Jeff Francis was in the midst of a career season, one in which he would never see again. Jorge De La Rosa put the issues that n...

2012 Top 20 Prospects – Colorado Rockies

It’s prospect season again. I’ve had my rankings listed on team pages, but have been horrible about keeping those up to date. As I mentioned on the pages, I’m looking at other rankings when I make mine (along with scouting reports and my own opinion). On to the Mile High City for the Rockies.

For the top 20, I’ve listed them according to my ranking.
