Who will be the next top prospect to get the call for the Cardinals?

A little over a month into the season, the Cardinals have already had to call upon their deep minor league talent to help out at the major league level. The Cards recently called up Carlos Martinez (#3 on the Cardinals prospect list, per Baseball America) and Seth Maness (#23) to help shore up their bullpen.

Who of the Cardinals top prospects might we see next? There are several options to consider.

John Gast

Gast has been dealing at AAA Memphis. The former 6th round pick has allowed just one earned run in 34.2 IP. He may not have the stuff of some of the Cardinals other top pitching prospects, but he seems to know how to make the best of what he's got. Gast could get the call should one of the Cards starters go down with an injury.

Michael Wacha

After a dominating spring with the Cardinals, Wacha has continued to impress with a 1.82 ERA in 34.2 IP at AAA. The Cards #6 prospect may not have as good of number as Gast, but he has a higher upside. Like Gast, he could g...

Cardinals organization roster matrix: 2013 full-season

With regular-season action underway for the full-season 2013 clubs, it is time for another refresh of the St. Louis Cardinals system roster matrix. This version reflects the changes made from the conclusion of 2013 spring training through the beginning of the regular season and extended spring training until the draft and the start of short-season action in June. The previous matrix reflects the rosters as they evolved from when spring training invitations were issued through the end of camp.
If you are new to the blog and not familiar with the Cardinals organization roster matrix, here is quick summary:
At the time of this posting, the St. Louis Cardinals had 246 players under contract from top to bottom, including 38 players on the 40-man roster and one more on the 60-day disabled list. The matrix places each one at his assigned level in the system by position and is updated daily or whenever transactions occur.
Extended spring training camp invitees are shown in separate groups b...

30 Prospects in 30 Days: Kolten Wong – 2B – St. Louis Cardinals

The Minnesota Twins initially selected Kolten Wong in the 16th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft out of Kamehameha High School in Honolulu, Hawaii after the left-handed slugger finished his senior year batting .600 and sharing the state’s Baseball Player of the Year Award. Wong chose the college route instead and enrolled at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Wong started 178 consecutive games between his Freshman and Junior seasons at both center field and second base for the Warriors. In each of those three campaigns, the 5’ 9”, 190 pound Wong earned first-team All-WAC honors and ultimately became the 22nd overall selection of the first round in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals brass inked the first-rounder for $1.3 million and shipped him off to Quad Cities of the Midwest League (A). In 47 games, Wong slashed .335/.401/.510 with five homers, 25 RBI and nine stolen bases. He showed some fine plate discipline in his first ...

Eight Cardinals make the final Composite Top Prospect List

Each year I put together a composite top prospect list by taking the top 100 prospect lists from around the web, assigning points to each ranking (100 points for 1st, 99 for 2nd, etc.), adding up the points and sorting from highest to lowest. I find this composite prospect list helpful for my fantasy baseball preparations as well as seeing what the "experts" think of the Cardinals top prospects. This year, 7 Cardinals made the composite prospect list, with 6 finishing in the top 100, as follows: Oscar Taveras (3), Shelby Miller (10), Carlos Martinez (29), Trevor Rosenthal (50), Kolten Wong (66), Michael Wacha (89) and Matt Adams (128). You can check out this year's full composite top prospect listing at my sister site MLB Composite Prospect Index, but here is the top 10: . #Pos PlayerTeamHi LowPts . 1 SS Jurickson Profar TEX 1 21299 . 2 RHP Dylan Bundy BAL 1 41281 . 3 OF Oscar Taveras STL 2 81267 . 4 OF Wil Myers TB 2 71261 . 5 RHP Gerrit Cole

Kolten Wong selected to Rising Stars Game in Arizona Fall League

The 2012 season has just ended, but St. Louis Cardinals second base prospect Kolten Wong is already making his case to stake a claim on the second base job for the Cardinals in 2013.

Less than a week after John Mozeliak told reporters that Wong would likely be in the mix for the starting second base position next spring, Wong was selected to participate in the Rising Stars Game, a show case that takes place during the Arizona Fall League.

Wong, who hit .287 with nine home runs, 52 RBI's, and 22 stolen bases for the Double AA Springfield Cardinals this summer, is also hitting the ball well in the Arizona Fall League too.

Wong is carrying a hot bat this fall too, hitting .321 in thirteen games played and has ten RBI's.

Wong and Springfield teammate Oscar Taveras participated in the Futures Game that took place during the 2012 All-Star weekend in Kansas City this summer. The Rising Stars Game is just another shot for Wong to showcase his skills against other top talent. ...

Baby Birds: Oscar Taveras and Kolten Wong impress at Futures Game

The future was on display Sunday night in Kansas City to kick off Major League Baseball's All-Star weekend at Kauffman Stadium.

The St. Louis Cardinals sent a pair of representatives to the Futures Game on Sunday night.

Second baseman Kolten Wong and outfielder Oscar Taveras, both members of the Double AA Springfield Cardinals, played in the prestigious event held for some of the best minor league and future Major League talent.

Wong, a native of Hawaii, hit second in the U.S. lineup. Taveras, a native of the Dominican Republic, hit third in the World Lineup.

Both Wong and Taveras put on shows before the game. Taveras had an impressive display of power during batting practice hitting bombs all over the "K". Wong pulled an Ozzie Smith, and did a standing backflip.

As for the game, Taveras wen...

Cards prospects impress in Futures Game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Cardinals Double-A second baseman Kolten Wong hopes to be in the big leagues as early as next year. His teammate, slugger Oscar Taveras, doesn't even want to wait that long.

"I'm ready to play in the big leagues now," Taveras said. "Yeah, I'm ready to go."

The Cardinals will likely wait until at least next season before entertaining the thought of promoting Wong or Taveras to St. Louis. But make no mistake. Both have a chance to be productive big league players in the near future.

The pair of promising prospects put their talents on display Sunday at the Major League Baseball Futures Game at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Taveras went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly for the World team while Wong went 0-for-2 but scored a run for the USA team.

Batting third and starting in right field for a talented World team, Taveras grounded out to Wong in the top of the first inning. He was robbed of an extra-base hit in the third inning on a diving catch by Blue Jays p

The St. Louis Cardinals have managed to stockpile a number of very promising prospects in their minor league system. Many are even excited about the Cardinals most recent draft picks. But none of those draft picks are as exciting as the dynamic duo the Cardinals have with their Double AA affiliate in Springfield.

Second baseman Kolten Wong and Oscar Taveras, both with the Springfield Cardinals, have been selected to play in the Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game played.

Both Taveras and Wong were selected to the Texas League All-Star team for their excellent seasons with Springfield, but a selection to participate in the Futures Game signifies that these are two big-time prospects that could be Major League ready in the near future.

Taveras is just 19 years old and is having a special season for the Springfield Cardinals. ...

When I first got the text message, I kind of thought it was a prank, Wong said.

The message said it was Matt Holliday and he wanted to invite him to St. Louis for a few days to work out, hit and get a chance to see the city.

You dont ever hear something like that, Wong said. I showed my dad and he was drawn back also because we hadnt heard of anybody doing that. I texted Matt back right away and said absolutely, Id love to come there and work out.

So Wong, the Cardinals first round draft pick out of the University of Hawaii barely five months earlier, took the three-flight, day-long journey across the ocean to St. Louis for an experience hell never forget.

And one that helped jumpstart his prominence in the Cardinals organization.
