Thoughts On The Jefry Marte For Collin Cowgill Trade

Last Tuesday, the Mets obtained outfielder Collin Cowgill from the Oakland Athletics for minor league infielder Jefry Marte. Honestly, I knew very little about Collin Cowgill and decided to do some research on him to quench my curiosity. Here is what I was able to learn about him as well as some input on Jefry Marte as well.
My first stop was to Baseball America where I was hoping to learn more about what his prospect status was or had been.
Collin Cowgill, Outfielder
Age: 26. Born: May 22, 1986 in Lexington, Ky.
Bats: R. Throws: L.
School: Kentucky.
Career Transactions: Selected by Diamondbacks in fifth round of 2008 draft; signed June 8, 2008 … Traded by Diamondbacks with RHPs Jarrod Parker and Ryan Cook to Athletics for RHP Trevor Cahill, LHP Craig Breslow and cash, Dec. 9, 2011.
Cowgill could be just about the perfect reserve outfielder because he defends all three positions, throws well and runs the bases intelligently with 71 steals in 76 tries at the Triple-A level. He won’t ...

Mets Trade Jefry Marte To A’s For Minor League Outfielder Collin Cowgill

The Mets have announced they have acquired OF Collin Cowgill from the A’s in exchange for Minor League infielder Jefry Marte.
Cowgill, 26, was part of the package that went from Arizona to Oakland in last offseason’s Trevor Cahill deal.
After a solid season at Triple-A in 2011, he slumped this season year with Triple-A Sacramento batting .254 with 33 runs, 17 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 37 RBI in 61 games.
He hit .269 with two doubles, a home run and nine RBI in 38 games with Oakland. With Sacramento, Cowgill batted .254 with 33 runs, 17 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 37 RBI in 61 games.
He’s capable of playing all three outfield spots and hits right-handed, so Cowgill has a good chance to fill a bench role for the Mets or perhaps work his way into a platoon.
Marte is a 22-year-old third baseman who spent this season hitting .251 with a .687 OPS in 129 games at Double-A. He’s yet to crack a .750 OPS in four full seasons.

Jefry Marte: Is He Still Developing?

As of a few years ago, the Mets had a promising crop of young international free agents – primarily Cesar Puello, Aderlin Rodriguez, Wilmer Flores and a young third baseman by the name of Jefry Marte. After five full seasons under his belt, Mr. Marte has shown progress – but is it enough to consider him a valid prospect?
Jefry Marte was signed as an IFA in 2007 out of the Dominican Republic and his major selling point was a plus hit tool and power-potential if he filled out his 6’1″ frame. Marte has played a full season at every level except for Lo-A, where he hit .233 in his first trip, and .264 his second time. Marte has progressively improved his plate discipline while cutting his strikeout rate, but has always had a problem with turning his contact into hits, as shown by his career .254 average. While the power has slowly ticked up, Marte hit nine home runs this season after hitting seven last season, he saw a downturn in stolen bases with nine this season compared to the 14 he ...

Mets Minors: Reviewing MLB.com’s Mets top prospects: Part III

#11 Juan Lagares:
What They Said – ‘Since signing at age 16 out of the Dominican, Lagares had moved slowly up the Mets’ ladder. He played at two levels in 2011 and actually hit for a higher average in Double-A, but he struggled to repeat that success at the same level in 2012. He makes consistent contact and doesn’t strike out much, but he also doesn’t walk and doesn’t profile to have too much power. A converted infielder, Lagares has done well in the outfield, even if his bat doesn’t profile perfectly for a corner spot.’
What I Thought – I thought that Lagares would need to develop power in a hurry to be of value to the Mets MLB club in any serious capacity. Sure he had a .873 OPS in A+ and a .903 in AAA for 2011, but did anyone see Lagares extra base hits and say, “This kid is a corner outfielder.”? No! He hits for average and can play around the OF (only sorta in center) and that means he’s no more than a 4th OF to me.
What We Got – A triple slash of .283/.334/.389, an OPS

Mets Minors: Zach Lutz looking to force promotion with bat alone

If a player can hit over .300 with good patience and power… why isn’t he playing in the big leagues? The answers to that question are varied but in the particular case of Zach Lutz, let’s try to get to the bottom of it.
Lutz was a 5th round pick for the Mets back in 2007. Zach’s father, Yogi Lutz (…AWESOME!), was his coach through high school where Lutz played third base (The same position he plays today). The fielding reports I’ve gotten on Lutz have been varied. I read at least one poor and one good review of his defense. This leads me to believe that he could hack it at third base… but probably not win a gold glove.
In terms of hitting, Lutz has tended to be a solid hitter. He doesn’t have prodigious power, like Mark Reynolds, or speed, like David Wright, but he does hit… and hitting is worth something. Let’s look at his yearly slash lines:

2008, NYP – .333/.442/.514 OPS: .956
2009, FSL + EAS – .278/.376/.426 OPS: .802
2010, GCL + FSL + EAS + INT – .287/.380/.571

Marte Goes Deep In B-Mets 8-3 Win Over Rock Cats

Marte’s three run shot sealed the deal for the B-Mets on Wednesday night
Behind a five run second inning the Binghamton Mets were able to take game three of their series against the New Britain Rock Cats by a final tally of eight to three. In that inning the B-Mets raked out four hits capped off by Jefry Marte’s ninth home run of the season, a three run shot over the left field wall. The hit total in the second inning was half of the overall number of hits Binghamton had in the game.
Marte ended up 2-for-4 on the night, with the three RBI’s and run scored in the second. Of all the B-Mets batters, he was the only one with an extra base hit in the game. Reese Havens, who batted leadoff for only the eighth time this season, went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Havens also had a strikeout and walk in the game.
Eric Campbell and Raul Reyes were 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Allan Dykstra was 1-for-4 with a run scored as well. Wilmer Flores went 0-for-4 in the game, but scored ...

Mets 101 Progress Report: Jefry Marte

Let’s take a quick peak at Mets prospect Jefry Marte -
Marte, drafted by the Mets organization shortly after his 16th birthday. The now 21-year-old is currently hitting a .261 average in 105 games and 375 at bats. To go along with his season average, he also has 51 runs, 49 rbi’s, 98 hits, 8 HR’s, and 6 stolen bases. As for fielding he still seems to be improving which is good, considering he is still in his early 20′s.
A lot of talk lately in New York, has been the possible contract situation looming between the current Met third baseman, David Wright and the Mets organization. Should the team sign him to an extension now, wait till next year after his contract runs out, or indeed part ways with, when it’s all said and down, the most decorated Met and home grown player of all time. Jefry Marte himself, is a third baseman. Since 2008, his second year of being part of the Mets farm system, his name has popped up multiple times in terms of a possible replacement for Wright down the ro...

The Binghamton Mets jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game one of their double header against the Reading Phillies on Wednesday night, but in the end found themselves on the losing end of the final score by a 3-1 tally.
The B-Mets first only run was scored by Josh Rodriguez, who was on first base when Jefry Marte doubled to left field. It was Marte’s third double of the 2012 season, all of which have come over the last six games, as well as his eleventh RBI in the same number of games.
Mark Cohoon got the start for the home team and pitched well for the first six innings of his outing, which included getting the R-Phils to go three up and three down in three of those innings. Then in the seventh the wheels fell off for Cohoon. Two consecutive singles and the R-Phils Jeremy Barnes reaching on a fielder’s choice loaded the bases. Cohoon faced one more batter at thi...

Mets Minors: Jefry Marte rediscovers his power stroke

Jefry Marte was signed as an international free agent in 2007. Scouts saw big potential in his frame for power and hoped he might develop into a powerful corner infielder. Marte has lived in the shadow of Wilmer Flores for a number of seasons. Now, Marte is actually successfully holding the bigger ticket name back in Port St. Lucie by producing well in Binghamton.
After a very good rookie year in the Gulf Coast League, Toby Hyde aggressively listed Marte as the Mets’ #8 prospect. There wasn’t a question that the power was there… there was simply worry that he could manage success at higher levels of the Met farm system.
The next years were not so kind to Marte’s career.. His 2009, 2010 and even 2011 campaigns all left fans and scouts pondering if Marte would ever truly pan out as a prospect. 2011 started fairly well, actually, but Marte would fade away down the stretch. Luckily for him… the Mets would send him to the AFL and he’d figure some things out.

The Binghamton Buzz: B-Mets Bats Come Alive

Ramblings from Henry and Fayette Streets

The Week That Was: May 8th – May 13th
The Binghamton Mets played .500 baseball over the past week, losing a rain shortened series at home against the New Britain Rock Cats two games to none, while taking the series in New Hampshire over the weekend winning three of four. The eleven runs the B-Mets scored in the game on Friday night in New Hampshire was the largest tally for them so far this season.
In the standings, the B-Mets find themselves in the same position they were a week ago – fourth place in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division, five games behind first place Reading. At weeks end, it’s third baseman Jefry Marte leading the team in batting average at .318. Marte hit his first home run of the season in Sunday’s 7-6 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, a two run shot that was the difference on the afternoon.
Matt den Dekker continues to lead the team in doubles with 11, adding one to that tally over the past week. Den Dekker als...

Binghamton Buzz: Marte Keeps Raking, Wheeler Says He’ll Make Next Start

Ramblings from Henry and Fayette Streets

The Week That Was: April 30th – May 7th
The B-Mets went 2-5 over the past week, losing both their series in Akron against the Aeros and at home against the Harrisburg Senators. Three of the five games they lost were only by one run. The Mets fell below .500 and slid in the standings from third to fourth place. The big news on the week was the loss of RHP Zack Wheeler, who was placed on the 7-day DL with a right middle fingernail avulsion. In his place, RHP Gonzalez Germen was called up from St. Lucie and started for the B-Mets on Friday night. In his AA debut, Germen went six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out nine Harrisburg Senators batters along the way. In other personnel news, Brad Holt was sent back to Binghamton from the Buffalo Bisons on Monday the 7th. At weeks end, Jefry Marte leads the team in batting average at .315, and despite his injury Zack Wheeler still has the top ERA amongst B-Mets starter...
