Daily Friar 3.17.13

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone! I hope that all of you are having a safe weekend with whatever you have planned. I am still here in Peoria having a great time taking in some baseball and making me ever ready for opening day. Yesterday I was at the game against the Diamondbacks and was very impressed with what I saw. Tyson Ross was outstanding on the hill allowing very little offense to the snakes. Whenever he gave up a hit or a walk, Ross was able to pitch around the issue and get out of the inning. In fact he only gave up one hit in his 5 1/3 innings of work. He did give up three walks however, which were a little concerning, but he didn’t allow them to score. The runs started coming late in the game as Brandon Kloess had a rough outing giving up four runs. If you look at the final score you would think it was a close one throughout. However, this wasn’t the case as the game wound up being 10-1 up until the 9th inning. One thing to note was Kyle Gaedele’s grand slam. This was no ordinary grand slam

Recap: Padres utility men, Alexi Amarista and Jesus Guzman, both played winter ball down in Venezuela. Though it was a smaller sample size, Jesus Guzman proved to be very productive during his time in the VWL; had he collected enough AB’s to qualify, Guzman would have ranked 17th in terms of average. Amarista’s 13 doubles were good enough to land him the 9 spot on the doubles leaders list. Neither of them produced eye-popping stats, but they collected experience that will hopefully benefit them going into the 2013 season. On the pitching side, Thad Weber

Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections, which have typically appeared in the pages of Baseball Think Factory, are being released at FanGraphs this year. Below are the projections for the San Diego Padres. Szymborski can be found on Twitter at @DSzymborski.

With regard to the projections below, an entirely reasonable person might ask: “To what extent does ZiPS account for catcher Yasmani Grandal‘s 50-game suspension that he was given for a performance-enhancing substance in November — in light, particularly, of how Grandal is given the second-highest WAR projection among all Padres batters?” To which question the author is compelled to answer: “Not at all, unfortunately.” In point of fact, Grandal’s suspension likely calls...

To their credit, Chicago has had some success in populating their starting lineup with cost-controlled talent. Alejandro De Aza, Gordon Beckham, Tyler Flowers, Dayan Viciedo: all are either in their first season of arbitration or earlier, and all are likely to be worth more than their salaries in 2012. What’s less fortunate is that none of them is likely to be any better than average, if that.
Even more unfortunate is that no other field player on the team is projected to be much better than average, either. Adam Dunn, Paul Konerko, and Alex Rios will make more than $40 million combined...

The San Diego Padres have obtained right-hander Brandon Kloess from the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Blake Tekotte.

Tekotte, 25, was designated for assignment Friday. A third-round draft pick in 2008, he hit .163 (8 for 49) in 30 games for the Padres during the past two seasons. Tekotte batted .243 with two homers and nine RBIs in 89 games this year at Triple-A Tucson.

Beat Farming: Pawsox are champions of the International League

The Pawtucket Red Sox have won the 2012 Governors' Cup Championship after sweeping the Charlotte Knights in the 5-game series last night. At least some team in the organization has won a championship. This is Pawtucket's first title since 1984.
Mike Rivera singled home Danny Valencia in the 2nd to give the Pawsox an early 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Che-Hsuan Lin drove in Andy LaRoche via a sacrifice fly, which proved to be the game-winner. Charlotte got one back in the 5th, but that was all they could do. The Pawsox added two more in the 7th, by way of a Jeremy Hazelbaker triple, and J.C. Linares single.
Once again, Pawsox pitching was stellar. Nelson Figueroa had another solid start, going 6 strong, giving up 7 hits, 1 R, 1 ER, and striking out 5. For the 4th consecutive game, the Pawtucket bullpen pitched hit-less ball. Will Inman, Jose De La Torre, and Josh Fields, pitched an inning-a-piece, combining for 4 K's and 1 walk.

Kris Johnson started but pitched only one inning.
The Indianapolis Indians’ 2012 season has come to an end, as they lost to the Charlotte Knights at Knights’ Stadium tonight. The Knights won this best-of-five playoff series, 3 games to 1, and they will move on to face the Pawtucket Red Sox in the Governor’s Cup series, which will begin on Tuesday. Tribe starter Kris Johnson was charged with the loss, despite having pitched only one inning. The start of the game was delayed by nearly two hours by rain, and it ended shortly after midnight.
The Indians found themselves in a hole very quickly. With one out, Kris Johnson gave up back-to-back walks to 2B Drew Garcia and 3B Brent Morel, putting runners on first and second. 1B Seth Loman lined a double to the wall in the left-center gap, driving in Garcia from second base, and leaving Morel on third. DH Josh Phegley lined a single into left field, easily scoring Morel, and leaving runners on

Rick VandenHurk took the loss tonight.
A busy first inning was all the Charlotte Knights needed to defeat the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field tonight in the first game of the first round of the International League playoffs. Knights’ starter Charlie Leesman dominated the Indians’ batters, allowing just one run on 6 hits and one walk, with 6 strikeouts in 8 innings of work.

The Knights jumped right onto Tribe starter Rick VandenHurk in the top of the 1st. With one out, VandenHurk gave up three consecutive hits — a double off the right-center field wall by 2B Drew Garcia, a double into the right field corner by 3B Brent Morel, driving in Garcia, and a 2-run home run just inside the right field foul pole by 1B Seth Loman. That gave the Knights a 3-run lead, with only one out in the game. VandenHurk got a fly out and a strike out to end the inning.

Charlotte 10, Buffalo 8
By Connor O’Brien
After two games in a row in which the Bisons only scratched out two hits, the bats finally broke through, but fell just short of beating Charlotte in a 10-8 slugfest. The Bisons have been very short-handed when it comes to starting pitching lately, so Wally Backman had to go with Garrett Olson out of the bullpen to start the game for the Bisons looking for innings. That didn’t happen. Olson was knocked out of the game after just 2.2 innings pitched. He allowed six runs, four earned, on five hits. He also walked two and struck out two. That meant Backman had to go to the bullpen early.
With Charlotte already ahead 5-1 in the third, Dylan Owen was called in to pitch. Owen allowed hit that scored a run (charged to Olson) which made it 6-1 Knights. The Bisons would fight back however in the bottom of the third. Josh Rodriguez hit an RBI-single to right, cutting t...

OTF: Morning Box Scores 4/14/12

Yesterday was Friday the 13th, but it wasn't all bad for the farm system. Actually it was more like a repeat of Thursday night as the youngsters went 2-2 for the day once again. Remember tomorrow's report will include our first ever player of the week award, so check back for that!Last night saw Huntsville win by a score of 4-3 over the Birmingham Barons. It took a 2 run seventh inning for the Stars to pull out the narrow victory. With Huntsville down 3-2 entering the seventh they made two quick outs, but a wild pitch from the Barons scored Brock Kjeldgaard and moved Hunter Morris to second. Morris would score on a single by Khris Davis to earn the winning margin. Kyle Heckathorn got the start for Huntsville and he had a decent 6 innings as he gave up 3 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 to earn the victory. Once again the Nashville Sounds went down to defeat, staying at just two wins on the year thanks to a series opening 6-4 defeat at home to the New Orleans...

OTF: Morning Boxscores for 4/11/12

It was double your pleasure for the Brew Crew at Wrigley Field and the farm clubs had a bit of success of their own on Tuesday night and I stress a bit of success as the margin of victory couldn't be much lower. The Brevard County Manatees continued their hot start to the season with another one run victory, this time taking down Lakeland 4-3. It was Taylor Jungmann's second professional start and while it wasn't the awesome line he had in his first game he managed to pull out a win to improve to 2-0 in his professional career. The rest of the teams weren't so lucky, especially the double-A Huntsville Stars who lost a marathon 11 inning 8-7 game to start their series with the Birmingham Barons. It was an absolutely crazy game that saw Huntsville lead by three runs in both the top of the 4th and 5th innings, only to see the Barons score two and three runs in the bottom half of each inning to tie the game at 5-5 after five complete innings. It remained scoreless unt...
