Titans draft preview by position: Defense

After covering what the Titans might to at each position on offense in yesterday's post, it's time to turn my attention to the defensive side of the ball.

Before I launch into the position by position portion of this post, I want to stress two things I noted yesterday. First, this is a mini-evaluation of each position from the perspective of what the Titans might do in the draft, rather than an updated evaluation of each position. I did one of those after the main wave of free agency pass, so check that out if that's what you're looking for.

Second, the Titans currently have nine picks in the draft. They had seven last year. I try to take this pretty seriously, which means my probabilities add up to how many players I think the Titans draft. My initial cut by position came in with the Titans drafting six players, so I went through and upped my predictions to where my cumulative probabilities add up to almost eight. I think there's a real possibility the T...

Titans Waive DE Pannel Egboh, Keep SS Markelle Martin On PUP List

The Tennessee Titans have decided to keep safety Markelle Martin on the physically-unable-to-perform list for the rest of the season after the rookie practiced with the team the past three weeks.
The Titans also waived defensive end Pannel Egboh on Tuesday.
Martin was the Titans' sixth-round draft selection out of Oklahoma State. The 6-foot, 207-pound safety struggled with injuries during the offseason and started the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Coach Mike Munchak said Monday it's been hard to get a feel for Martin who had been limited even the past couple of weeks. Source: Associated Press Attached Thumbnails

Tennessee Titans final 53-man roster prediction

We'll be following the Tennessee Titans roster cuts here on Total Titans this afternoon and evening as they trim their roster to 54 players (the Titans get a one-week roster spot exemption for Kenny Britt's suspension.)It's hard to say how several of the injured players will be handled. Dave Ball or Markelle Martin could be placed on Injured Reserve with the new designation making one player eligible to be reactivated. I don't expect Mike Otto's injury to prevent him from being placed on the active roster - he should be good to go in Week One or shortly thereafter. Ryan Mouton's, Zach Clayton's and Zac Diles' injuries could hinder them from making the team, not that I thought they would make it if healthy.Roster predictions and commentary follow after the break.

Titans Place WR/KR Marc Mariani On IR, Waive Six Players

The Tennessee Titans trimmed their roster to 75 players on Sunday, releasing 11 players, putting Marc Mariani on injured reserve and placing Markelle Martin on reserve/PUP.
Those released by the Titans include no surprises. They were kicker Will Batson, offensive linemen George Bias, William Vlachos and Jonathan Palmer, receivers Marcus Harris, LaQuinton Evans and Chase Deadder, quarterback Nick Stephens, safety Christian Scott, tight end Joey Haynos and running back Herb Donaldson.
Mariani was placed on IR following surgery for a compound fracture on his left leg suffered on a kickoff return Thursday night against Arizona.
Martin has been out for all of training camp with a knee injury that he had scoped just before the start of camp. Source: Titans Insider Attached Thumbnails

Titans place WR Kenny Britt, S Martin on PUP list

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Titans have placed Kenny Britt on the physically unable to perform list as the receiver recovers from his third surgery on his knees within the past 10 months.

The Titans also placed rookie safety Markelle Martin on the list Wednesday. Both can practice once they pass a physical.

Tennessee reports for training camp Friday, and Britt's availability for practice was doubtful after the team confirmed he had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after the team's minicamp in June. He tore his right ACL in September and had a second surgery on that knee in May.

Britt also was charged with driving under the influence July 20 when trying to drive onto the Fort Campbell Army installation.

The Titans also waived undrafted rookie offensive lineman Chandler Burden.

Titans rookie safety Markelle Martin did not pass his physical today and was placed on the physically unable to perform list. Martin injured his knee prior to the NFL Combine earlier this year and it has continued to bother him. Martin can come off PUP as soon as he passes his physical.
More on the Titans' rookies, including the Zach Brown puzzle

After yesterday's post highlighting Greg Cosell's comments, I wanted to write more on the Titans' rookies before moving on to how the Titans sacked the quarterback in 2011, including highlighting some comments I collected around the time of the draft and haven't had a chance to incorporate into a post yet.The place to start is with Zach Brown. Cosell's comments echoed something I heard from other people and noticed in some videos myself: he simply doesn't play as physical as you'd expect. This is especially curious given that he was a Maryland state champion as a wrestler in high school. The Titans have shown a bit of a propensity in recent years for wrestlers (Mike Martin and Karl Klug were, and there may be others I'm not remembering offhand), and there are a number of attributes like hand usage that apparently translate pretty well. It's also pretty hard to be a good wrestler and not be physical, so how does a very good wrestler like Brown not ...

Titans Agree To Terms With 6th Rd Pick SS Markelle Martin

The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with safety Markelle Martin on Friday on a deal that under the NFL's new slotting salary system should be worth around $2.2 million total. Martin, a sixth-round pick from Oklahoma State, receives a four-year rookie contract with standard base salaries of of $390,000 in 2012, $450,000 in 2013, $570,000 in 2014 and $660,000 in 2015. Under the slotting system, the signing bonus for Martin should be in the range of $102,000. Martin, who is expected to help on special teams and vie for a backup safety role, is the third member of the Titans 2012 draft class to come to terms on a contract.
Titans bring in two veteran safeties for visits

The Titans have already brought back their two starting safeties from 2011 this offseason, franchising Michael Griffin and resigning Jordan Babineaux long term. They also added a safety in the 6th round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Markelle Martin, which could end up being a steal as Martin was once seen as a 3rd or 4th round pick before an injury.
However, they don’t appear to be done adding safeties as they brought in two veteran safeties, Chris Crocker and Yeremiah Bell, for visits. They seem committed to adding depth at the position so it’s likely they sign one of them. Crocker and Bell were both cut this offseason, by the Bengals and the Dolphins respectively, but both were starters last season, albeit below average starters on the wrong side of 30.

Tennessee Titans Rookies Arrive in Nashville Ready to Play

Today was the day for most of the Tennessee Titans 2012 NFL Draft class as they made their way to their first ever appearance at Baptist Field. The Rookies along with other undrafted free agents will begin a “Rookie Camp” tomorrow to fight for a spot on the Titans roster.
The Titans draft class is as follows, Kendall Wright, Zach Brown, Mike Martin, Coty Sensabaugh, Taylor Thompson, Markelle Martin, and Scott Solomon.
Defensive tackle Mike Martin was on scene to speak with Titansonline.com and he told them that he was excited to be there and that it felt like college all over again. Nice analogy Martin. I’d tell him that I would agree with that statement, but he is on a bigger stage now. Fortunately I don’t think that Titans fans will have to worry about an ego on this kid. He told reporters that, “It’s completely new, but the one thing that stays consistent is we’re playing ball, so that’s the exciting thing about it. The field’s 100 yards long.”

Draft Grades: Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans are stuck in limbo. They’re not in full rebuilding mode, but they aren’t legitimate contenders. As a result, they had a tough decision to make in this draft: address immediate holes, or draft for the future. Based on their early selections it seems as though they chose the latter, which was probably the right decision.
The Titans shocked a lot of people with the selection of Kendall Wright. Receiver was not viewed as an immediate need, but the Titans apparently viewed him as one of the best values on the board. Wright is a perfect compliment to Kenny Britt, and the Titans now have two legitimate weapons in place which will ease Jake Locker’s transition whenever he takes over for Matt Hasselbeck.
Zach Brown is an elite athlete who fell down draft boards due to a lack of production in 2011 at North Carolina. He’s undersized and not very physical, but the Titans defense is one of the few units that tends to favor athleticism over size and Brown should fit right in....

Tennessee Titans 2012 Draft Grades

20. WR Kendall Wright A-Kendall Wright was 16th on my board and fills a need at wide receiver as Nate Washington is not a #1 receiver and Kenny Britt is unreliable. Without Britt, they struggled for consistency at the wide receiver position. This pick should be an A, but I don’t see how they passed on David DeCastro. He was arguably the top prospect of the decade at their position of biggest need. In fact, guard/center might be the only position where they need a new starter. I don’t get it.52. OLB Zach Brown AThis is a great steal. I had a first round grade on Zach Brown, who is an underrated talent with elite athleticism. He also fills a big need at linebacker as Will Witherspoon is getting older. Brown could start year 1.
