Top pick Cooper moves into Arizona starting lineup

The Arizona Cardinals opened their final session of OTAs Monday, shrugging off the scorching desert heat as first-round draft pick Jonathan Cooper moved in at the starting guard spot on the revamped left side of the team's offensive line.

Cooper said he came into the offseason workouts expecting to compete for a starting job after Arizona chose him out of North Carolina as the seventh pick overall in this year's draft.

The 6-foot-2, 311-pound lineman would start alongside left tackle Levi Brown, who was sorely missed a year ago after he tore his right triceps in a preseason game and sat out the entire season. Installing Cooper at left guard means that Daryn Colledge shifts to the right side.

''It's getting a little bit easier every day but I'm really still trying to focus on learning the playbook,'' Cooper said after Monday's workout. ''The physical aspect will be there, but I'm really just trying to be more of a technician and more mentally sound.''

Cardinals rethinking need to draft O-line help

TEMPE, Ariz. Levi Brown experienced an unfamiliar sensation last season as he watched the Cardinals train wreck of season from the sidelines with a torn triceps.
Fan appreciation.
For five seasons, the fifth pick in the 2007 Draft was a lightning rod for criticism of Arizonas offensive line. But with Brown out of lineup for all of 2012, it was suddenly open season on Cardinals quarterbacks, with Kevin Kolb being sacked an astounding 22 times in one three-game stretch early in the year.
When asked Tuesday if it felt odd to be missed, the veteran left tackle smiled and offered the perfect mixture of humor and wisdom.
I havent been back on the field, he said. Things could change.
Ever since the 2012 season ended, its been assumed that the Cardinals would make changes along their offensive line in the offseason. When they didnt do it in free agency aside from signing depth guard Chilo Rachal everyone assumed that meant the Cards would be shoring up through this weeks NFL Draft.
But what if the Cards dont use o

Bruce Arians Feels Cardinals’ Offensive Woes ‘Not As Dire’ As Some Believe

New Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said his first look at his team prompted more positive surprises than negative ones, most notably on the offensive line.

“We get some guys healthy, it's not as dire as some might make it out to be,” Arians said. “And some young guys have a chance to play who might be all right.”

Two of those young guys are tackles Nate Potter and Bobby Massie, rookies last year. Massie started every game while Potter started the last six.

“They got some experience against quality opponents,” Arians said. “They're just going to get better.”

The priority this off-season will be addressing the quarterback position. Arians likes to throw deep, and the current quarterbacks on the roster — Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Ryan Lindley — have the arm strength to do it, he said.

But he’s not committing to any of them and that’s part of the reason he’s eager to start meeting with his coaches.

“What we have on the roster, they played well at times,” he said. “It&#39

Cardinals Putting A Large Emphasis On Improving Their Offensive Line

Cardinals new head coach Bruce Arians expects to have as many as four assistant coaches focused on improving their offensive line next season, per Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.
This comes in contrast to former head coach Ken Whisenhunt‘s approach that left Russ Grimm as the only coach working with the unit. Somers mentions that Grimm’s approach didn’t help some of their young players develop and typically favored veteran players.
There’s no question that Arizona’s offensive line has been absolutely terrible in recent years. Pro Football Focus has them rated as the worst unit in terms of both pass-blocking and run-blocking in 2012.
The good news is that after an extremely poor start to the season, fourth-round pick Bobby Massie started coming towards the end of the season. In fact, Nate Potter also showed some promise as well, but he has plenty to work on in the coming months before he can counted on.
Depending on how the new regime views Massie and Potter, there’s a chance th...

Cards' QB switch backfires as win slips away

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt will be on the hot seat when he returns to the Valley for his normal Monday morning press conference. This time, the topic of conversation wont be his job security. Not yet, anyway. The topic will be one controversial personnel decision that may or may not have cost the Cardinals in a 23-19 loss at Atlanta on Sunday.

First the particulars: The Falcons offense was in a giving mood all day at the Georgia Dome, and the Cardinals defense, after a two-week hiatus, looked like the Cardinals defense again despite the absence of starters OBrien Schofield (ankle, IR) and Calais Campbell (calf).

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw three of his stunning five interceptions in the first quarter (Atlanta had a whopping six turnovers overall), and Arizona used those offerings to take a 13-0 lead and make the unthinkable plausible. But those 13 points were as problematic as they were promising, because they could have been so much more had quarterback John Skelton not done what he has done so

Losing streak prompts Cards to shuffle deck

TEMPE, Ariz. Theres no formula for lineup changes in the NFL. Injuries, aging veterans, not-quite-ready rookies and underperformers can all play a role in game-day alterations -- and all of those factors exist with the Cardinals.

Regardless of why, Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt has made it clear that change is occurring for the most important reason of all: Losing.

What is there to say other than its not good enough? said Whisenhunt, whose club has dropped five in a row after a 4-0 start. We started off and made enough plays to win games and then, over the last five, we havent done that.

When that happens on a consistent basis, coaching staffs will look at different personnel. In the Cardinals case, the defensive changes that will take place this week are largely a product of injuries to defensive end Calais Campbell and outside linebacker OBrien Schofield. But the Cards may try some tweaking at other positions as well, even if defensive coordinator Ray Horton insists the changes wont force alte

Cards' season transforms into salvage mission

TEMPE, Ariz. The Cardinals bye week might have come one week too early.

Sure, many of the walking wounded returned to practice, although defensive end Calais Campbell (calf) swelled the injured ranks by one this week. Sure, the Cardinals reported to practice Wednesday with a bounce in their step not seen in some time. Sure, the coaching staff had time to evaluate personnel (and itself) to determine whats working and whats not.

But the reward for this down time is the 8-1 Atlanta Falcons, who promise to be focused after suffering their first loss last week. Nobody outside this organization believes the Cardinals are going to even their record at 5-5 on Sunday in the Georgia Dome. Nobody believes the talk coming from the Arizona locker room on Wednesday was anything more than bravado.

People called the 4-0 start a fluke, and rightfully so, because weve lost the last five, quarterback John Skelton said.

It's hard to imagine the Cardinals being anything other than 4-6 on Monday. It's folly to think

Nate Potter the new offensive tackle for the Cardinals

Cardinals LT D’Anthony Batiste was benched in favor of Nate Potter during Sunday’s Week 9 loss to the Packers. Finally. Batiste has been the worst left tackle in the league this season and is a big reason why the Cardinals’ offensive line reached historically bad proportions. Potter is a seventh-round rookie, but he can’t do much worse. Expect him to start in Week 11 when the Cardinals come out of their bye.
Nate Potter is a big boy and was a fan favorite in the 2012 NFL Draft. Potter is a big boy and can’t do any worse than Batiste who was part of the worst offensive line in the league. Hopefully things change this week.

Cardinals move Potter to LT, consider other moves

The Cardinals are going to give rookie Nate Potter a shot at left tackle, and coach Ken Whisenhunt says more changes might be coming as Arizona looks to end a five-game losing streak.

A seventh-round draft pick out of Boise State, Potter entered Sunday's game at Green Bay in the second quarter, replacing D'Anthony Batiste. Whisenhunt says he was ''very impressed'' with Potter's performance.

Now Whisenhunt says he and his staff will take the upcoming bye week to see what other changes might be warranted.

Unless the Cardinals make another move on the offensive line, Arizona would have rookies starting at both tackle spots when it resumes play at Atlanta on Nov. 18. Fourth-round draft pick Bobby Massie has been the starter at right tackle.

It's a QB-driven league; Cardinals have proof

As the Cardinals fell victim to another predictable loss on Sunday, we couldnt keep our eyes and minds from wandering and wondering: What if Peyton Manning had chosen Arizona instead of Denver? What if the Cardinals had a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback instead of an oft-injured starter and a career backup?

We know the defense hasnt been impressive the past two weeks, especially in the first half of Sundays 31-17 loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field. We know two running backs are also on the shelf and we know that the offensive line has more than its share of issues, even if rookie left tackle Nate Potter did show some promise in Green Bay.

But we also know this: A good quarterback can mask a lot of offensive deficiencies. Take Sundays opponent, for example. The Packers dont run the ball well -- at least they didnt before Sundays game. Before facing the Cardinals, the Packers were 26th in the league in rushing offense (90.1 yard per game) and yards per carry (3.7).

They also dont protect QB Aaron Rodgers part
