Grossi: Wade, Hagg, Kitchen Could Be Roster Victims For Draft Picks

This morning, ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi went through the possible roster casualties in favor of the team’s five draft selections in last week’s NFL Draft. Some of the names could be a little surprising. They include last year’s seventh round pick Trevin Wade, 2011 7th-rounder Eric Hagg, and undrafted free agent Ishmaa’ily Kitchen.
“McFadden’s arrival probably would most imperil the roster status of Trevin Wade. Why? Besides McFadden, the new regime signed free agent cornerbacks Kevin Barnes and Chris Owens. Although low-priced, Barnes and Owens would have to be absolute busts not to stick; each received a cash bonus to sign. The other relevant cornerback is Johnson Bademosi and his roster spot is safe because he is the baddest special teams player on the team now that Josh Cribbs is gone.”
“If so, Slaughter will be given every chance to win the starting free safety job. The incumbent is 2012 undrafted free agent Tashaun Gipson, who was more impressive than 2011 seventh-round draf...

The Cleveland Browns cornerback situation as it exists today

The Browns have a lot of cornerbacks on the roster, believe it or not. Everyone knows about Joe Haden and Buster Skrine at this point, but let’s go over the rest to see just how daunting a task it might or might not be to field a starting backfield with these guys. Remember, the Browns need a starter on the outside opposite Joe Haden and then will need to decide who best fits the needs as depth, nickel and dime coverage situations.
Of course, this is just what’s currently on the roster. There’s still time for free agency, post-draft trades, and also post-draft cuts. The best cuts usually come when a decent player is about to get paid like an elite player and gets cut ahead of a bonus. Not sure which players fall into that category but Browns fans will remember clamoring for the team to sign Eric Winston who was cut loose by the Texans as he was about to be owed $5.5 million in base salary.
Anyway, the here and now includes the following…Leon McFadden – 22 years old – 5 ft 10 in – 19...

The Browns and the First Round: Dee Milliner

We are less than a week from the NFL Draft, also known as the most important day of the year for your Cleveland Browns. With (another) new regime taking over the reigns and new schemes in place on both sides of the ball, it is crucial that Joe Banner, Mike Lombardi, Ray Farmer, Rob Chudzinski and the crew nail these three days. It all starts Thursday night with the primetime First Round.
The Browns currently hold the sixth pick. Will they go with a defensive back? Could they turn to a pass rusher? Would they possible fortify the offensive line? Could they shock everyone and take an additional offensive weapon? Or maybe, just maybe, would they trade the pick to a team that wants to move up and snag one of those top offensive tackles?
From now until Thursday’s first round, a different member of the WFNY staff will take their look at one player in particular and tell you why the Browns, should they choose to, would go in this direction.
The Player:
Name: Dee Milliner
Position: Corner...

Browns list Marecic, Cooper among in actives; Dimitri Patterson returns

The Cleveland Browns have declared wide receiver Josh Cooper, safety Eric Hagg, cornerback Trevin Wade, running back Brandon Jackson, defensive tackle Ronnie Cameron, offensive lineman Jarrod Shaw, and fullback Owen Marecic inactive for Week 14 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
With every player on the team’s injury report listed as probable for this week, every player was a healthy scratch. Running back Trent Richardson had multiple listings this week, falling victim to a finger injury in addition to his chest and ribs. This also signals the return of cornerback Dimitri Patterson who had missed considerable time with an ankle injury.
Earlier this week, Browns head coach Pat Shurmur stated that the team would have “some decisions to make” as to who would play, who would start and of course who comes in in specialty situations.
“Those are good meetings to have as coaches,” said Shurmur. “Then we just let them play out, make a decision and let it roll.”

NFL News: Panthers claim former Browns CB James Dockery

James Dockery was one of the final cuts for the Browns this season as he was presumably beaten out by guys like Trevin Wade, Johnson Bademosi and Tashaun Gipson. It took a little while, but “Dock” has been picked up off of waivers by the Carolina Panthers to take Jon Beason’s roster spot, who was put on injured reserve.
Beason has only played in five games since receiving a five-year, $51.5 million contract extension in 2011 that included $25 million in guaranteed money. He missed 15 games last year with a torn Achilles in his left leg.
The Panthers claimed cornerback James Dockery off waivers from Cleveland to replace Beason on the 53-man roster. Dockery joined the Panthers at practice Wednesday.
Sources have told WFNY that there is a very good chance that Dockery will be active this weekend and could see the field, despite attending his first practice yesterday. The Panthers, with all their injury issues, have only five corners capable of dressing on Sunday.

Brown's young corners to be tested

BEREAThe good news is Joe Haden is back.
The bad news is Dimitri Patterson is most likely out.
In the first game with the Bengals, the Browns did a pretty good job of shutting down the Bengals rushing game. However, they were beaten in the passing game and by an 81-yard punt return by Adam Jones early in the game.
Haden will step in at left cornerback opposite Sheldon Brown on the right side. However , Pattersons ankle injury will likely result in Buster Skrine, Trevin Wade or Johnson Bademosi taking over on the slot receiver. Bademosi has played almost exclusively on special teams leaving the third cornerback to be either Skrine or Wade.
In the first game with the Bengals, premier receiver A.J. Green wasnt the receiver that hurt the Browns the most, but rather the trio of Armon Binns, Andrew Hawkins and Brandon Tate combined for 10 receptions for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Green did have seven catches for 58 yards and a score.
Patterson spent much of the first game on Green. Haden is expected to draw the

Browns’ Young Secondary Still Has Potential Despite Rough Day

There’s no other way to say it than to say that the young guys were overwhelmed yesterday. Trevin Wade got torched. Buster Skrine seemed overmatched and chasing. Eric Hagg played pedestrian when he wasn’t giving up his own touchdown. Look, it’s difficult to lose your top two cornerbacks in between week one and week two of an NFL season.
No matter how much planning you do to miss Joe Haden during a suspension it doesn’t mean you’ll be prepared. People absolutely crush Sheldon Brown, but there’s just no doubting that he’s the man until someone replaces him. Sunday taught us that there’s still some room for the young corners to grow out of his shadow.
None of this is to say that I’m disappointed that the Browns kept Trevin Wade over other players like James Dockery. I liked Dockery too. He played with aggression and spirit while contributing well on special teams. Who knows? Maybe the Browns don’t give up that punt return TD if he’s still on the squad.
The fact is that Wade outplayed e...

Allowing Myself To Think (Some) Good Thoughts About The Browns

It took a second viewing of Thursday night’s blowout victory against the Green Bay Packers for it to sink in, but there were plenty of things to take away in a cautiously optimistic fashion. While I’m on the record (or soon will be) that I don’t think the Browns will be making any drastic moves northward in the standings that will result in making the playoffs or anything like that, I do think the collective processes of drafting good, young players with star potential, developing the current young core further, along with the change in ownership should give the organization and its fans some collective momentum going forward. Here’s a few thoughts as we creep closer to the regular season.

We’ve seen it many times how NFL teams have been able to rebuild almost overnight and rise up from a 5-11 or 6-10 record and make the playoffs the very next year. 1 We saw the Browns drop six games by 7 points or less last season (three by three points or less). That was with a green and all-aro...

Trevin Wade to start for Browns vs. Packers

I would assume this has everything to do with the injury to Dimitri Patterson, but Browns’ rookie Trevin Wade indicated on Twitter that tonight will be his first NFL start.
First NFL start today against one of the best NFL quarterback in the game!!!Browns vs Packers!#ThankYouLord
— Trevin Wade (@TwoStarWade) August 16, 2012

Who knows what this actually means? Is Wade starting in the nickel? What this does seem to indicate is that the Browns currently think highly enough of Trevin Wade to give him a look tonight ahead of Buster Skrine and last year’s undrafted holdover James Dockery.

The AFC North is always tough, and 2011 was no exception. All four teams were in the top 10 in overall defense. They made up half of the AFC playoff teams, going a combined 25-15 outside the division. Even the Browns were an almost respectable 4-6 outside the AFC North.
2012 should be similar. So getting a better look at the rest of the division to see what should be coming our way this year is wise. Let’s begin an examination of the division by looking at the team at the other end of I-71.
