Projecting the Indianapolis Colts' Roster

The Indianapolis Colts signed a lot of free agents and added 7 more rookies in the draft. Let's see how I think their roster will look now.
Indianapolis Colts Rookie Minicamp Recap

**Back from a 5 day hiatius**The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their annual rookie minicamp over the weekend, and there were some interesting and surprising things that happened. The first thing that stood out at the minicamp was that Josh Chapman, who didn't play a snap in his rookie season last year, was taking first team reps. It's good to see Chapman healthy, as he's a talented player when he's on the field. Had he been healthy around draft time last year, he would have been a 2nd round pick. Many expect Chapman to be the answer down the line, but imagine if he can start having an impact now?!? That would be a bonus. It's obviously not certain if he will start, and I guarantee you that this was just a test by the coaches, but still, he didn't look bad, and proved that his knee is alright. The nose tackle spot is a very intriguing spot on the Colts.Hugh Thornton is being placed at right guard and looks quite good there. He seemed comfortable and it looks li...

Colts Sign Aubrayo Franklin

The Colts have agreed in principle with nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin.Aubrayo Franklin is a veteran in this league. He's been around for 10 years, and has a lot of experience in this league. He's a big guy, weighing 317 pounds and has pretty good athleticism to go along with his size. Now he's a bit older, so his role should be more of a mentor to guys like Josh Chapman and potential rookies coming in.For now, Franklin should be the starter. McKinney is a backup at best, and Chapman has never played a down in the NFL. They have no real good guy to start at nose tackle. Franklin is that guy, and serves as the perfect short term solution for the Colts. He can help them out from Day 1.This was a good signing for the Colts, as they found their nose tackle for at least the next year, maybe two, and can help that struggling defensive line. The nose tackle spot was easily the weakest position on the Colts' defense last season, as the incumbent (whether it be Johnson, Teveasu...

Colts NT Josh Chapman To Go On Injured Reserve, Season Over

Colts rookie nose tackle Josh Chapman will have to wait until next season to make his long-awaited NFL debut.
Chapman tweeted today the Colts have placed the fifth-round pick on injured reserve to let his surgically repaired left knee heal.
Chapman tweeted late this morning: “Injured Reserve For the rest of the season now it’s just time to get this knee to a 100% so it’s Beast Mode come next season. #COLTSTRONG”
The Colts had not yet announced the move.
The team is expected to fill two roster spots Tuesday after interim coach Bruce Arians announced Monday that defensive end/tackle Fili Moala suffered a season-ending knee injury in Sunday’s 20-13 home win over Buffalo. Source: Indianapolis Star Attached Thumbnails

Colts place Moala, Chapman on IR

Defensive tackle Fili Moala and nose tackle Josh Chapman officially had their 2012 seasons come to an end as the Indianapolis Colts placed both on injured reserve Tuesday. Defensive tackle Kellen Heard, who has played in 23 career NFL games, was signed. He appeared in eight games with the St. Louis Rams this season. Chapman was activated from the physically unable to perform list Nov. 12, but was inactive the past two weeks as the Colts evaluated to see if the rookie from Alabama had recovered enough from a knee injury to play this season. Colts head coach Bruce Arians announced Monday that Moala had suffered a torn ACL in Sunday's victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Moala, 6-4, 310 pounds, started in all eight games he played in this season and recorded 21 tackles (11 solo) and one pass defensed. He was inactive for three games.

Colts activate rookie nose tackle Chapman

Heading into Sunday's highly anticipated road game with the New England Patriots, the Indianapolis Colts announced some major roster moves Monday afternoon. The Colts activated rookie nose tackle Josh Chapman off the team's reserve/non-football injury list and added him to the team's 53-player regular-season roster. Chapman is a 6-foot, 316-pound defensive lineman who was a fifth-round pick by Indianapolis in April. A former All-Southeastern Conference and All-America performer at the University of Alabama, Chapman had been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery in January. He had been hurt in a game with the University of Florida last fall but opted to put off surgery until after the season was over. The Hoover, Ala., native was unable to practice with the Colts last spring, in training camp or when the regular season began. Chapman had shown enough improvement through his rehabilitation process, however, to be cleared three weeks ago to begin limited on-the-fiel...

Indystar Colts Notebook: Starters Near Return as Team Hits Crucial Stretch

It's time for an update on the odds, ends, and injury recovery progress of the Indianapolis Colts, courtesy of Phil Richards and The Indianapolis Star. As they approach their game against the Titans in Nashville, TN, several Colts starters are getting healthier; a very good sign. Richards also updates us on Josh Chapman, Coach Pagano, and the surprising appearance of Andrew Luck on the injury report:
Quarterback Andrew Luck (knee) practiced Wednesday but was listed on the Colts injury report. No details about why he was included on the list were provided. He did go through the full practice.
With the way the offensive line has struggled, it seemed only a matter of time before Luck was nursing some nagging injury. Hopefully, while the team's overall health is improving, the offensive line play will improve as well. If these two things can coincide, we could be in store for some more competitive football.

2012 Indianapolis Colts still coming together

A theme Indianapolis Colts fans have unfortunately become very familiar with over the last six years is missed games to key players during the regular season -- and in the post season. To start out the 2012 season draft pick Josh Chapman was placed on the physically unable to perform list, former starting middle linebacker Pat Angerer suffered a foot injury that kept him out of the first six weeks, Robert Mathis suffered an injury that has kept him out of games, Dwight Freeney has missed time, and Cory Redding was unable to suit up last week.
While not every player on this list is guaranteed significant time on the field when they return healthy, the key players will be worked into the defense and will undoubtedly improve the overall performance of the group. One player who returned against the Browns was the aforementioned Angerer.

What makes Angerer's return all the more exciting for a young Colts defense learning a new system is the performance of Jarrell Freeman -- form...

A little surprised we won't see Donnie Avery although he's had some issues with his left thigh in camp. With the wide receiver race wide open the young guys all have a great shot to show their wares.

Colts Positional Breakdown: Defensive Line

The defensive line is one of the few places on the team that fans should not worry about.

As we switch to the defensive side of the ball, we learnt the offense has a lot of upside, but may not be the greatest going into next year. The defensive side has the ability to be solid right away. The Colts did a lot to help their defensive line this offseason. The coaches decided to switch the defense to a 3-4 defense, and one of the spots that changes the most is the defenslve line. Well, the Colts weren't shy to go get players. They first got Cory Redding, a veteran five tech defensive end who played with Coach Pagano in Baltimore. They then got Brandon McKinney, a backup who also played with Pagano, who never got a shot to play as Haloti Ngata got all the work and the spotlight (and rightfully so). They believed that he could be a "hidden gem." Then, in the draft, they went out and got risky nose tackle Josh Chapman in the 5th round. They already had Fili Moala and Dra...

Colts Officially Announce Josh Chapman Signing

Yesterday, the Colts officially announced the signing of fifth round pick defensive tackle Josh Chapman. Chapman was the first pick of the fifth round and a great value pick for Ryan Grigson and his team.
Chapman projects to be a nose tackle in the new defensive system, and both he and Colts' officials have projected confidence in his ability to become the primary nose tackle for the Colts' defense. He will likely start as a rotational player this season (if he's ready for the season, due to an ACL injury), behind Brandon McKinney.
While it was reported that Chapman had agreed to a deal last week, it wasn't official until this week. The Colts now have six picks signed; only the 1st through 3rd round picks (Luck, Fleener, Allen, and Hilton) are currently unsigned.

Colts sign 5th-round draft pick Josh Chapman

The Indianapolis Colts have signed fifth-round draft pick Josh Chapman, giving them six draft choices under contract.

Chapman is a 6-foot, 316-pound defensive tackle who anchored the middle of Alabama's defensive line last season. He tore the ACL in his left knee on Oct. 1. He continued to play with the injury and did not have surgery until January.

He finished his career with 88 tackles, 44 solo, 2 1/2 sacks, 13 1/2 tackles for loss and two national championship rings.

Indy has now signed all six of its third-day draft picks - Chapman, offensive guard Justin Anderson, running back Vick Ballard, wide receiver LaVon Brazill, linebacker Tim Fugger and quarterback Chandler Harnish - but nobody from the first two days of the draft.

Kuharsky projects AFC South Defenses

Paul Kuharsky takes a hard look at the AFC South in an effort to rank the defenses. No shocker here--the Colts are in the basement:
4.	Indianapolis Colts: The Colts might have the worst defense in the NFL this season. Their run defense was abysmal last season. Indianapolis has nowhere to go but up in this department and additions such as Cory Redding, Brandon McKinney and Josh Chapman should help shore up the run defense at the line of scrimmage. Still, such a drastic scheme change really leaves Indianapolis in a bind on this side of the ball for 2012.
