Chargers lose two more players to injuries

Defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin and safety Brandon Taylor joined a long list of San Diego players on injured reserve Wednesday. Franklin has missed three of the Chargers' past six games because of a knee injury. He started eight of the team's first nine games this season. Taylor, a rookie, suffered a knee injury in his first career start last Sunday in the win over the New York Jets. The Chargers now have have 17 players on injured reserve. Assigned to the active roster from the practice squad were rookie safety Sean Cattouse and rookie cornerback Greg Gatson for the final regular-season game Sunday against Oakland. The Chargers also added rookie cornerback Arthur Hobbs and rookie tight end Anthony Miller to the practice squad after losing fullback Jamie McCoy, who was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers' active roster.

Chargers place Bigby on IR, sign Bird

Veteran safety Atari Bigby was placed on season-ending injured reserve, the San Diego Chargers announced Tuesday. The seventh-year player, who injured a groin muscle in Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens, was second on the team with 68 tackles. To take his roster spot, the Chargers re-signed linebacker Bront Bird, who was with the Chargers last season. The undrafted free agent had seven tackles in nine games. Also, the Chargers signed safety Sean Cattouse to the practice squad. He filled the practice squad spot that opened up when the team promoted offensive tackle Kevin Haslem to the active roster last weekend.

Chargers lose S Bigby for season with groin injury

The San Diego Chargers placed strong safety Atari Bigby on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday because of a groin injury and signed linebacker Bront Bird.

Bigby, who started all 11 games, was hurt in the first half Sunday in a 16-13 overtime loss to Baltimore.

Bird played in nine games with the Chargers in 2011 after making the squad as an undrafted rookie from Texas Tech. He was released during final roster cuts in August.

The Chargers also filled a vacancy on their practice squad by signing safety Sean Cattouse, an undrafted rookie from California.

Also Tuesday, it appeared the Chargers are headed for their second straight local TV blackout and third this season. The team says nearly 12,000 tickets need to be sold by 1:25 p.m. Thursday or the game will be blacked out in Southern California.

Cesaire, Hester let go by Chargers

Defensive end Jacques Cesaire and fullback Jacob Hester were among the 22 players released or re-designated as the San Diego Chargers reached the 53-player roster limit for the regular season.

Cesaire, signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003, was the leader of a defensive line for the only team he has played for. Cesaire became expendable because of a youth movement along the line.

Hester was a special teams captain, who played 62 games since being drafted by the team in 2007.

''With guys like that, they feel like family,'' Chargers coach Norv Turner said. ''But you have to make some tough decisions in this business, and we believe we've constructed a solid roster designed to win football games.''

San Diego Chargers 2012 Roster Prediction

Can Phillip Rivers lead the Chargers back to the Playoffs in 2012?
The 2011 season was not kind to the San Diego Chargers as the team fell flat on their faces after a tremendous 4-1 start to the season, losing at one point six straight games on their way to an 8-8 season, causing them to miss the postseason for the second consecutive year.
However, with Phillip Rivers at quarterback, the Chargers will always have a chance and despite some key losses like Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson heading to Tampa Bay and running back Mike Tolbert going to Carolina, not to mention the retirement of long-time center Nick Hardwick; the Chargers have the talent to make noise in the AFC West in 2012.
Now that the Chargers have made what is likely their last player acquisition before the start of training camp, here is how I see the position battles ending up. I will include the 45 man active gameday roster, the 53 man team roster, and the 8 practice squad members. Also included is...

Now that the Chargers have made what is likely their last player acquisition before the start of training camp, here is how I see the position battles ending up. I will include the 45 man active gameday roster, the 53 man team roster, and the 8 practice squad members. Also included is the first member of the usually crowded Chargers IR roster, 5th round draft pick OG Jonnie Troutman. Obviously based on injuries and game plan, there will be slight changes to this list, but this will be the baseline.

45 Man Gameday Roster:

Offense – 21 Players

Quarterback: Philip Rivers, Charlie Whitehurst.

Rivers is probably the most obvious player on the roster. He is the leader of the offense and frankly the whole team. He is tough as nails, as he showed playing on a torn ACL during the 2009 playoffs. In my...
