Around the state: Each team loses

The Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced future Hall of Fame quarterbacks on Sunday.

Peyton Manning was good. Tom Brady was good enough. Both were victorious.

Brady and the New England Patriots were held well below their 37-point scoring average, but they still defeated the Dolphins 23-16 at Sun Life Stadium. The loss was Miamis fourth in five games and virtually ended any hopes of what already had been an unlikely playoff berth.

Manning threw for three touchdowns to lead the Broncos past visiting Tampa Bay 31-23. It was the Bucs second consecutive loss to a division champion Atlanta beat them the previous week dropping them a game back of Seattle for the NFCs last wild-card spot.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made it 0-3 for the state of Florida on Sunday. The Jags lost at Buffalo 34-18.

Heres a more in-depth look at Week 13 around the state:

Miami Dolphins: Week 10 NFL Power Rankings (#12)

Last week: 12 (-2)
Record: 4-4
In spite of a close road loss in a previously underrated Colts team, the Dolphins are still legitimate playoff contenders and if history is any indication, they’re more likely to make it than some other borderline playoff teams in the AFC right now, other than San Diego. Every year, 5 new playoff teams make the playoffs that didn’t make it the year before, dating back 17 straight years. I use this in my Power Rankings every week.
Right now, Chicago, who didn’t make the playoffs last year, looks like a lock to make it this year. Meanwhile, Cincinnati and New Orleans, two playoff teams from a year ago, look very unlikely to make it this year. Indianapolis, sitting at 5-3, is another solid bet to make the playoffs after missing it last year. Detroit, at 4-4, probably has to go 6-2 the rest of the way to make the playoffs, against a brutal schedule, so they’re probably out. Other than that, not much is set in stone.
Miami, San Diego, Minnesota, Seattle, an...

Know Your Opponent: With DolFans NYC

The NFL season is upon us and we open with the first installment of Know Your Opponent where we will spend some time focusing on the Texans’ weekly adversary. This week, we get a few questions in with DolFans NYC and will touch on the Dolphins’ experience with Hard Knocks, first-year coach Joe Philbin, rookie QB Ryan Tannehill, plus a myriad of other players and issues.

What, if any, effect does the Miami Dolphins participation in Hard Knocks seem to have had on the team? Do you get the feeling the experience was a positive one?
I doubt it had much of an effect but I know some of the players who got called out on the show seemed to step it up and play better after their public embarrassment, so I would say that was positive. I think Hard Knocks would have been a much better experience for the Dolphins if they weren’t such a disaster right now. It was just week after week of pain but if it were up to me, the Dolphins would do the show every year.

Which rookies hav...

Miami Dolphins Final Roster Analysis

Quarterbacks
Possibly the most surprising developmental of the Dolphins’ final cuts was that they kept 4 quarterbacks. Not only does that almost never happen, the Dolphins were assumed to be keeping 2, Ryan Tannehill and either Matt Moore or David Garrard as a veteran backup. If they kept 3, it was assumed that the 3rd one would be Pat Devlin, a developmental 2011 undrafted free agent, because of his upside and because of Moore’s and Garrard’ salaries.
However, the Dolphins kept all 4. This is likely in an effort to try to trade one of the veterans to a team needing a veteran backup for a late round pick. Neither of their salaries is guaranteed until September 6th. Green Bay is looking for an upgrade over Graham Harrell and if they don’t like any of the quarterbacks cut like Mike Kafka or Brian Hoyer, they could send Miami a late round pick for Moore or Garrard. Whoever is not traded will stick around as the primary backup to Tannehill, while Devlin as a developmental 3rd quarterbac...

2012 Training Camp Preview: Miami Dolphins

Dolphins training camp previewTRAINING CAMP GOALS 1. Settle the quarterback conundrum. The Dolphins have been stuck in a quarterback abyss ever since Dan Marino retired in 1999. While there are some decent arms on the roster, there is no guarantee relief comes in 2012. David Garrard, a 34-year-old veteran, appears to be the front-runner based on his seamless fit into the west coast offense. But incumbent starter Matt Moore showed promise last season, and is younger. And Ryan Tannehill represents the future of the franchise, but considering he's only had 19 college starts at Texas A&M, it is likely that the Dolphins' first-round pick will need time to adjust to the speed of the NFL game. Whichever veteran does end up starting the season opener will need to produce wins to keep Miami from investing playing time in Tannehill late in the season. 2. Get comfortable with the new systems. The Dolphins have spent all offseason breaking in a new coaching staff, and trying...
