Hurricanes Prospect Update 2/11 - 2/17

Big offensive performances are somewhat common in junior hockey and you'll often see more than a few players record at least a point in every game they played in a given week. We've seen this a few times with the Hurricanes CHL prospects this year as both Ryan Murphy and Brock McGinn have put together some impressive offensive weeks over their career but none of their recent outputs tops the weekend Victor Rask just had. The Canes 2011 second round pick exploded for the Calgary Hitmen this past week with four goals and eight points in only four games, recording a hat trick in one of them. This pushes him to above a point-per-game pace on the season with 29 in 26 games in the top-10 on the team in scoring despite not playing for half of the season.

It's pretty easy to see why the Charlotte Checkers wanted to keep Rask on the team to start the year when you look at how well he is playing with the Hitmen. His play-making skills and willingness to go to the dirty areas ...

Hurricanes Prospect Update 2/3 - 2/10

The playoff races are beginning to heat up in the CHL and the good news for Hurricanes fans is that many of the team's prospects should be in the post-season this spring, which will give everyone a chance to get a closer look at their performance. One team that has already clinched a playoff spot in Keegan Lowe's Edmonton Oil Kings and Lowe himself has played a pretty big role in that. Not only is he the team captain, but he was also forced to play some bigger minutes during late-December and early-January when the Oil Kings lost a couple of their defensemen to the World Junior Championships. Lowe played some very good hockey during that stretch and he continued to do so this week, adding a goal and three assists to his totals. As a third round pick, Lowe's ceiling isn't projected to be very high but he should be an invite to Carolina's training camp at the start of next season.

After the jump, we'll take a closer look at Lowe's performance and the re...

Hurricanes Prospect Update 1/29 - 2/2

Prospects sometimes become a bit of an afterthought when the NHL season gets rolling, but don't think we have forgot about them, as there is still a lot to report on regarding those in Carolina's system. This week wasn't as eventful as the last, but there were a couple big standouts. The most notable one was clearly Phil Di Giuseppe who had five points in two games with the Michigan Wolverines this weekend. We'll talk about him more along with the other NCAA kids but first, let's take a look at what the Hurricanes CHL prospects did this past week.

Hurricanes Prospect Update: 1/21 - 1/28

The prospect reports are going to be presented differently from here on out. Instead of going through each player individually, we're going to go by leagues and note some of the standout performances. The reason for this is because there have often been a lot of cases where there wasn't much to report on for some players because they were either injured, suspended or didn't do much in the previous week. I haven't posted an update on Carolina's NCAA prospects in awhile for exactly that reason. So going through every single prospect every week was getting rather daunting and I thought it would be easier to present everyone's stats and talk about some individual standouts.

There is plenty to talk about on this first installment as Brock McGinn and Ryan Murphy both had tremendous weeks for their respective clubs. We'll talk about them in detail after the jump.

Hurricanes CHL Prospect Update: 1/8 - 1/13

This is an exciting time for many junior hockey players, as a select grouping of them just returned from participating in the World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia. If that wasn't enough, the NHL training camps just started up and there were plenty of junior hockey players invited to join the teams who own their NHL rights for a chance at playing in the big leagues. Even if they only stick around for a couple games, the thrill of playing in the best league in the world has to be quite an experience for these players who are lucky enough to get an invite.

Defenseman Ryan Murphy was the only junior player who Carolina invited to camp, and while I think he is a longshot to make the team, he is going to have the next week to make the best impression he can on the coaching staff so that they may consider giving him a full-time roster spot. I mean, if there is anyway Murphy can erase his lackluster performance at the World Juniors from his mind, it's making the NHL out of...

Hurricanes CHL Prospect Update: 1/1 - 1/7

This was an interesting week for junior hockey, as there were a few teams playing without some of their top players with the World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia. You could consider this a time for some of the "secondary" players on their teams to step up while the stars are out, which it is for some teams like the Niagara Ice Dogs who were missing at least three of their best players this week. Another team missing two of their key players was the Edmonton Oil Kings, who had to spend the last few weeks without defensemen Griffin Reinhart and David Musil due to the WJC. This presented an opportunity for Carolina prospect Keegan Lowe to step up a little bit. Being the captain of the squad, Lowe is already playing a major role on the Oil Kings, but no Reinhart or Musil gave him a chance to play more minutes than usual and he certainly rose to the occasion with two goals in three games, giving him eight total on the season.

A couple of the Hurricanes' prospects al...

Hurricanes Prospect Update: 12/24 -12/31

This is going to be a different update than ones in the past because we are at the part of the year where teams are returning from their holiday break and playing a partial schedule. There are also quite a few teams icing much different lineups due to the World Junior Championships currently going on right now. So, instead of looking at each player individually, I'm going to go over each league and talk about any possible standouts from Carolina's prospect pool since it doesn't make much sense to review each player if they only played one game. We'll also look at how Victor Rask and Ryan Murphy are performing for their respective countries at the WJC in Ufa.

World Junior Championship
Things appear to be going pretty well for Ryan Murphy and Team Canada on paper, as they have won their first three games and outscored their opponents 17-7 but their last two wins didn't come easy. Canada had to battle back from being down 3-1 to Slovakia and were given a run for...

Hurricanes CHL Prospect Update: Murphy continues to improve

The junior hockey season has been an odd one so far, or at least it has for a lot of the teams currently housing Carolina Hurricanes prospects. Take Ryan Murphy's Kitchener Rangers for instance, they were struggling a fair bit at the start of the year but have straited to turn things in the right direction over the past few weeks. They won all three of their games in the last week and are 8-1-1-0 in their last 10 games. Murphy hasn't been the main catalyst for this turnaround but he has been improving a lot after a rough month of October and had another multi-point performance this weekend. The news of both Murphy and the Rangers turning things around is good news for the Canes organization as a whole.
On the other hand, some teams that were flying high early in the year are now going through a rough patch with the current prime suspects being Daniel Altshuller's Oshawa Generals. The Generals were one of the most exciting teams in the OHL during the beginning stages of ...

Hurricanes CHL Prospect Update: Carrick and Altshuller continue to impress

It was a good week for the Carolina Hurricanes 2012 draft class as their three picks playing in the OHL this season had a very solid set of games. Leading the way was defenseman Trevor Carrick with three points in two games as Carolina's 115th overall pick this year continues to improve on his rookie season in the OHL. Carick has been trusted with playing some important minutes on the Mississauga Steelheads this year and he has responded to the challenge well at both ends of the rink by being solid defensively and on-pace for his best offensive season in junior hockey. Carrick's three points over the weekend gives him 9 on the season, which is half of what he had last year with Mississauga and the previous year in the OHJL.
Coming out of the draft, Carrick was billed as a very safe pick for the Hurricanes in the fourth round and he seems to be developing nicely with the Steelheads this year. I still don't think we have a future star here, but I don't think it's ...

Hurricanes Prospect Update: CHL (10/21 - 10/28)

Just about every Hurricanes CHL prospect had an offensive explosion last week and I was very excited and cautiously optimistic to see how they would build off their performances? Why cautiously optimistic you ask? Because while they definitely showed how good they could be last week, the majority of them had been struggling up until that point and this could have been just a flash in the pan. Obviously I don't expect them to have multi-point performances every week, but I do have fairly high expectations for some of these players and they haven't exactly lived up to their billing thus far. I'm not going to drop names but if you have been following any of these prospects, you probably know which players I'm talking about.
Anyway, it turns out that being cautiously optimistic was the best way to go as the six Carolina CHL non-goalie prospects combined to score a total of zero goals and three points over 14 total games. This isn't that big of a deal when you consid...

Hurricanes Prospect Update: CHL (10/15 - 10/22)

Up until last week, the performance of Carolina Hurricanes prospects that are currently playing in the Canadian Hockey League has been a bit underwhelming to say the least. That all changed this past weekend as almost every Carolina prospect had an explosive performance and have finally started to make more of an impact on the scoresheet than they were before. The biggest name in the group is obviously Ryan Murphy, who recorded two goals and eight points in the three games he played over the weekend to guide Kitchener to three straight wins. It's been a slow start for him and the Rangers but he definitely took things to another level this weekend and it could be a sign of him returning to the level of play we are more used to seeing from him.
Expecting Murphy to keep up this kind of pace all season is unreasonable, but he really needed a big performance sooner or later with the way his season has started and he was able to do that this weekend. To make things even better, Murph...

Hurricanes Prospect Update: CHL (10/9 - 10/15)

I am usually not one to panic or jump to irrational conclusions but it's hard not to get a little frustrated when you look at the scoring lines of most of the Hurricanes CHL prospects so far this year. The leader in points is Trevor Carrick with four points in eight games and their top prospect, Ryan Murphy, has only one point in eight games. Adding to that, there have been only two goals scoring by Carolina prospects in the CHL, which might sound bad but it isn't that big of a deal when you consider that every prospect, aside from Brock McGinn, is a defenseman. Still, it's fair to say that more was expected out of these players, especially Murphy who has been pretty disappointing in his first eight games.
With that being said, it's still a bit too early to panic because the season is still less than a month old and there is plenty of hockey left to be played. The time to panic about someone having a poor season should come much later than eight games into the seaso...

Hurricanes Weekend Prospect Update: CHL (10/4-10/8)

The CHL season is only a few weeks old but there have already been a couple surprises, one of which being Hurricanes goaltending prospect Daniel Altshuller arguably being the biggest standout among Carolina prospects in the league. His Oshawa Generals are off to a terrific start this season and while the team's explosive offense is likely a bigger reason for their success, Altshuller is having a fairly solid year so far. I'd like to see him improve his save percentage from the .905 mark he is posting right now before I begin to proclaim him to be something special, though. He may lead the the OHL in wins with six, but that likely has more to do with the strong team in front of him rather than the play of Altshuller himself. Either way, it's good to see that his team is off to a great start and hopefully the Generals can keep it up so we get to see how Altshuller looks in some playoff games.I've talked about Altshuller & the Oshawa Generals quite a bit this year ...
