Updated Louisville Football Roster

An updated Louisville football roster was published at GoCards.com earlier this afternoon. There aren’t a whole lot of surprises on the updated roster, but here are a few takeaways.

I reported last month that running back Jeremy Wright was not expected to be back for his senior season. There still hasn’t’ been an official release about Wright, but he is no longer on the Louisville roster. From what I’ve been told, he will attempt to enter the NFL draft.

Zeke Pike was no longer with the team towards the end of the season and was removed from the roster, but has since been reinstated.

One notable name among the list of walk-ons is linebacker Leroy Kelson. He was at one time a highly regarded prospect in Palm Beach Gardens, FL., in 2011, but never signed with a school. Kelson is the half-brother of 2013 Louisville signee Donel Elam.

It could be a mistake, but tight end Chris White and defense back Jordan Paschal are no longer listed on the roster.

Louisville signs small but strong 2013 class

Louisville’s recruiting class came in at second in the Big East and not very highly rated as far as national polls. But with so many young players already on the roster…the Cardinals really just needed to adresss certain aspects of the team.
Strong implied that the class he has coming to Louisville is one that will play a major role in the success of this program. Strong seemed particularly happy about James Quick, saying “We got the one receiver we wanted.”
Here is a list of the 2013 Louisville Football Signees…

Florida safety transferring to Louisville

Charlie Strong has landed another transfer from his former school. Former three-star safety Willie Bailey joins cornerback Adrian Bushell, tight end Gerald Christian, and receiver Robert Clark as former Gators who are leaving Gainesville for Louisville. The 6-2, 175-lb Bailey is originally from Hallandale, Florida and was rated the 33rd best safety nationally in the 2012 class by Scout.com. He left Florida in December and has reportedly already enrolled at UofL.
This is a big addition in my opinion. Bailey has the size and physicality of a safety, but according to folks down in Florida he can cover as well so it would not be out of the question to see him line up at cornerback. If he can in fact play cornerback, having a 6-2 cornerback could pose problems for the receivers lining up opposite him, but we’ll let the Louisville coaches figure that out.
Bailey must sit out per transfer rules, but will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Charlie Strong Lands Another Florida Transfer

Willie Bailey, a 6-foot 172-pound former Florida safety will reportedly transfer to Louisville. Bailey was a redshirt freshman for the Gators in 2012 and decided to transfer from the school immediately after the season ended.
Bailey, a Hallandale, FL., native will be forced to sit out in 2013 due to the NCAA’s transfer rule. He’ll have four years of eligibility starting in 2014.
Bailey is the fourth player to transfer from Florida to Louisville since Charlie Strong took over the Cardinal program in 2010. Tight end Gerald Christian and wide receiver Robert Clark both transferred to Louisville from Florida last year and will be eligible to play in 2013.
Bailey was a 3-star prospect coming out of high school and chose Florida over Miami, North Carolina and Tennessee. He was rated as the 33rd best safety in the 2012 class.

Bowl practice gives UF players chance to shine

GAINESVILLE, Fla. This is the time of year Gators coach Will Muschamp has one eye focused on the present and one on the future.

It was that way a year ago as Florida prepared to face Ohio State in the Gator Bowl. Beating the Buckeyes was important Florida won 24-17 but so was determining which young players were most ready to contribute in the future.

Cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy opened the most eyes during those Gator Bowl practices, and not only did he receive significant playing time against Ohio State, he also entered his sophomore season as one of the underclassmen Floridas coaches trusted.

Purifoy started 11 games this season and delivered the goods by finishing fourth on the team with 51 tackles with a team-high three forced fumbles and two blocked kicks.

Muschamp reminded the team about Purifoys rise during last years bowl practice prior to the Gators starting to prepare for their Jan. 2 matchup against Louisville in the Sugar Bowl.

Transfer: CB Willie Bailey To Leave Florida Gators After Falling On Depth Chart

Freshman cornerback Willie Bailey will transfer after one season with the Florida Gators during which he saw no action on the field. Bailey was to receive a redshirt after not getting on the field during the 2012 season. Despite coming back in 2013 with four full years of eligibility remaining, Bailey decided to look for playing time elsewhere.
A three-star recruit out of Hallandale, FL (Hallandale), Bailey was one of the top 100 players in the state of Florida coming out of high school according to 247Sports. He was considered one of those fly-under-the-radar types and committed to Florida over Miami. He had an uphill battle to crack the depth chart, but he enrolled early and by all accounts had a productive spring. Throughout the 2012 season, Bailey reportedly fell back though. Not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel in terms of cracking the depth chart, he decided it was time to move on. No word yet and where Bailey will resurface.
