Indiana's Oladipo leaving school early

Indiana junior Victor Oladipo is heading to the NBA. Cody Zeller could be next.

Oladipo made his announcement official Tuesday at a news conference inside Assembly Hall. He is the Hoosiers' first underclassmen to leave school early since Eric Gordon and D.J. White departed after the 2007-08 season. Zeller's announcement is expected later this week, possibly Wednesday.

Losing Oladipo was no surprise to those inside the Indiana program who watched the 6-foot-5 guard mature from talented freshmen into a refined star. NBA scouts have been so impressed with Oladipo's progression that many mock drafts now project him to be taken among the top six picks.

With Oladipo expected to graduate May 4, his 21st birthday, and coach Tom Crean collecting information that Oladipo would be a certain lottery pick, it was too much too turn down. Crean said the two would start looking into potential agents soon.

''I swayed back and forth especially throughout the season, but I felt this was best for my famil

Draft watch: Oladipo’s stock on the rise

The last time Indiana had two first round NBA Draft picks was in 2008, which followed one of the most tumultuous seasons in school history. In June of 2008, both Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers) and D.J. White (Detroit Pistons, traded to Oklahoma City Thunder) both had their names called by David Stern.
Could the Hoosiers be on their way to multiple first round picks again this summer? Inside the Hall takes a look at the current stock of IU’s potential draft candidates:
Cody Zeller
ESPN: (5) Draft Express: (3) NBADraft.net: (1)
· Analysis: Despite taking criticism from some in the national media for not being dominant enough through IU’s first 14 games, Zeller’s position is still in the top five of just about every mock draft out there. He’s easily the most effective running big man in college basketball and is incredibly polished for a seven-footer who just turned 20. His numbers may not make the dramatic jump that some were expecting because of IU’s incredible balance on offense...

Sports Illustrated tabs IU No. 1, Zeller on regional cover

Indiana has been selected as the preseason No. 1 by Sports Illustrated and the magazine has selected Cody Zeller for one of its four regional covers for this week’s issue.
Here’s the complete release from Sports Illustrated:
(NEW YORK – Nov. 6, 2012) – This is the season Indiana basketball fans have been waiting for. The talented and experienced Hoosiers begin the season ranked No. 1 in Sports Illustrated’s 2012 College Basketball Preview, on newsstands now. Cody Zeller, who may be the most important recruit to come to Indiana since Isiah Thomas, is set for a dominant sophomore season and is featured on Sports Illustrated’s regional cover. This marks the first time an Indiana Basketball player has been featured on the cover of SI since D.J. White in 2007.
The last five top ranked preseason teams to be featured on SI’s College Basketball preview have all at least reached the Sweet 16:
2012 – Indiana Hoosiers (TBD)
2011 – North Carolina Tar Heels (Elite 8)

RTF Fan Series: Indiana

Next up in our Run the Floor fan series is Nicole Slivensky from Indiana University. Her bio on Twitter pretty much sums things up: "Crimson functions as a neutral in my wardrobe. HOOSIERS, Cubs, Blackhawks, college basketball." She, like Shawn Cunningham who we profiled last week, is a diehard hoops fan, which makes her alright in my book.

I asked her for a brief bio and this is how she describes herself: "I graduated from Indiana University in 2010 with degrees in history, political science, and Spanish (read: unemployment). Currently I live in Chicago but hope to migrate south for the winter. In addition to college basketball, I love Seinfeld, red wine, and being taught how to Dougie."

RTF: What is your favorite memory regarding Indiana hoops?

NS: My favorite memory regarding Indiana basketball is when College Gameday came to Bloomington on February 16, 2008. I mention the date because it was days after the NCAA announced Kelvin Sampson&#39...

Tom Crean Returns Indiana to Glory

Tom Crean Returns Indiana to Glory
It appears after three of the most difficult years in Indiana Hoosier basketball history it’s apparent Coach Tom Crean has brought the Indiana Hoosiers back to glory. As the Final Four weekend approaches I’d like to take a closer look at my choice for National Coach of the Year. Ever since Kelvin Sampson destroyed the Indiana University basketball program through multiple recruiting violations, Hoosier fans have not had much to cheer for until the arrival of highly touted freshman Cody Zeller. Coach Tom Crean did an exceptional job recruiting Cody Zeller by convincing him to say no to the Tar Heels and agreeing to come to Bloomington to revive the IU program. Crean has done an amazing job this season at Indiana and should be in the conversation for the National Coach of the Year award.

Remember when Indiana was 6-25? Tom Crean’s Indiana resurrection

Crean Has Brought Indiana Back
What’s that? You’ve heard this story before? I don’t care. It bears repeating for anyone who’s taken their eye off the college basketball scene for a few decades and assumed that the Indiana Hoosiers appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 is just the same old, same old. It’s not. Not in recent years. In fact, it’s the first time they’ve advanced to the regional semifinals since a surprise run to the NCAA Finals under Mike Davis in 2000-01. Before that, it was Bobby Knight’s 1993-94 edition. Well, Indiana is back and Tom Crean’s at the heart of the story, as well he should be.
You see, Indiana’s college basketball legacy is a storied one. Bobby Knight. National Championships. Alumni Hall. The state loves its basketball and its namesake state university represented that passion in the product on the floor — for decades. Twenty-nine seasons to be exact. Love him or hate him, The General built a program that was lauded for its discipline, a trait that w

Cody Zeller Key to Indiana Hoosiers Rebirth, Undefeated Season

When college basketball season started at Big Ten media day on Oct 27th, you would have been very hard pressed to find any journalist who believed the Indiana Hoosiers would become the final Big Ten team to lose this season.
No one saw this renaissance happening this year, and certainly not in this convincing manner. Their 10-0 record includes a win over then #1 Kentucky, and it’s something IU Coach Tom Crean believes should be a building block:

“I don’t want them to put it behind them. I want them to build on it. I think it can be a springboard to future opportunities. I think it would be very stupid and it wouldn’t make much sense for us to come in here and try to downplay that game or downplay that it happened,” Crean said.
“It wouldn’t make any sense. At the same time, it would be ridiculous as a coach to downplay that there were mistakes made in the game. The old adage in coaching that you don’t accept in victory what you won’t accept in defeat, even when you beat the No. 1 t...

Who’s Their? A Positive Spin on Indiana

When you’re a Kentucky fan that works in downtown Louisville, you work with, commute against, and stare across a murky body of water to the dreary northern shore of the Ohio at Indiana daily. It’s a depressing state and depressing site… but as sad as it is, it isn’t as sad as the historic basketball team.
I’m never one for pessimism so let’s make water out of rain and take a positive spin on Indiana University:
Mascot: Hoosiers. While the origin of the word is unknown, original meaning of “hick” or “white trash” is fully accepted. The definition has evolved to mean all people residing in or native to Indiana, even those aligning themselves with IU basketball. I mean, heck, you can’t say things like like this, this, and this and have a negative reputation can you?
Colors: Cream and Crimson… All I know is that it’s funny but what I really know is that it would be even better if Louisville’s colors were cream and crimson.
Coaches: Bobby Knight, Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson, and Tom

Wins are there, but so are questions

Five games into the season, the 2011-12 Indiana Hoosiers have yet to be challenged.
Four games in Assembly Hall and one at the Ford Center in Evansville have produced five wins by 20 points or more by Indiana. That’s never happened in the history of the program.
Dig into the box scores and you’ll find little to nitpick with the way Tom Crean’s team has dismantled the opposition.
The fouling epidemic, an Achilles’ Heel a season ago, has tempered at least for the time being. The Hoosiers are one of the top shooting teams in the country thanks to unselfish, crisp ball movement and smart shot selection. And there’s an inside scoring threat roaming the paint for IU for the first time since D.J. White’s departure. His name is Cody Zeller and he’s already picked up two Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards.
IU’s 5-0 start feels different then last season, when the Hoosiers didn’t always win convincingly. This year, IU has left little doubt who is the better team. There are high fives, smiles...

Season of Expectations Begins Tonight for Tom Crean, Indiana

There are few days on the sports calendar I look forward to more than the first IU basketball game. And there are few first IU basketball games I have ever looked forward to more than tonight’s home tilt against Stony Brook.
The reason is easy: the Season of Expectations is finally here for the Hoosiers. (As is the first episode of The Assembly Call.)

Because we are on the precipice of finally having the kind of team that IU fans are used to, I am not going to delve at all into the details of what caused the temporary downfall of IU basketball. You know the details, I know them, and they are quickly becoming just a horrid memory. Let’s keep it that way.
But to understand why IU fans like myself are so stoked for the 2011-12 season to begin, the season I am referring to as the Season of Expectations, it is important to understand the progression of the last three years under Tom Crean that has brought us here.
2008-2009 – The Season of Disbelief
