Justin Masterson to be converted into a reliever

Terry Francona announced today that there would be a bit of a change in the Red Sox pitching staff. Justin Masterson, who has spent his season as a starting pitcher, will be converted to a reliever. The reasoning is most likely to keep his inning total low for the rest of the season in hopes that he will still be of use to the club in September. Masterson has been sent down to Pawtucket to get acclimated to the change in his role and IF Jeff Bailey has been called up to take the newly created roster spot.

Taking Masterson's place in the rotation will be Clay Buchholz. Buchholz struggled during the beginning of the year with Boston (5.53 ERA in 42.1 IP) but has put up good numbers since being sent back down to Triple-A Pawtucket (2.47 ERA in 43.2 IP.) The club demoted him so that he could get a chance to work on his fastball and it seems that he has gotten a handle on the pitch. Clay won't be called up for a few more days until Justin Masterson's spot in the rotation comes around again.

Pawtucket Red Sox have five All-Stars

The first-place Pawtucket Red Sox will be sending five players to this year's International League All-Star Game. The game will take place on July 16th in Louisville, KY and this is the first time ever that the Triple-A PawSox have had more than three All-Stars in a season. Impressive.

The cast will consist of:

RF/1B Jeff Bailey - .296 BA, .398 OBP, 22 HR, 58 RBI
DH Chris Carter - .293 BA, 16 HR, 68 RBI
CF Jonathan Van Every - .290 BA, 21 HR, 49 RBI
RHP Charlie Zink - 2.63 ERA (second-lowest in the IL)

Fantasy Rundown: Down Goes Big Papi

It's official: David Oritz is on the DL. While the Boston leader in home runs and RBI is out the Sox will rely even more on Manny Ramirez and will look for contributions from a variety of sources including rookie pitcher Justin Masterson. Elsewhere, John Smoltz had a rough return in the bullpen, Mark Teixeira is scorching hot, and the Dodgers and Prince Fielder showed signs of turning it around.

Daisuke Matsuzaka put on the Disabled List

Daisuke Matsuzaka was put on the disabled list today after an MRI on his shoulder revealed a mild strain of his right rotator cuff. Dice-K tried his hand at arguing the move, saying that he wanted to pitch through the strain. Unfortunately when you still need a translator to complete post-game interviews, the chances of winning an argument with your English speaking manager are pretty slim.

The DL move will be retroactive to Wednesday. Jeff Bailey has been called up to take Daisuke's spot on the roster. The logical move will be for Wakefield to take Daisuke's spot in the rotation this weekend because he will be on normal rest thanks to the day off; however, what will happen after that is anyone's guess.

Newest Red Sox Jeff Bailey loves Gumballs

This is a funny story about being told he was called up to the big club
"I was getting a gumball out of the machine. I put the gumball in my mouth and RJ told me and I told him he was lying to me and walked away. He had to tell me a second time. ... [G]etting to play baseball every day at any level is better than going back to school or working in the paper mill at home."
