Players A to Z, Homer Bailey

Homer Bailey pitches as a starter for the Cincinnati Reds. He just finished his third season with experience in the majors at the age of 23. So far, however, his major league performance failed to live up to the hype surrounding him. He currently owns a 12-13 career record with a 5.45 [...]

Late Season NLPOTW

Moving backward through my inbox, I discovered an email from October 8 that announced that the Reds had two consecutive weeks of players being named the NL Player of the Week. It was Joey Votto for the week ending September 27 and Homer Bailey for the next week. From the email:

Baseball-Intellect Looks at Homer Bailey's Mechanics

We've heard a lot about Homer Bailey's improved mechanics, and the evidence is definitely there in the results that we saw during the season. Bailey chalks a lot of the improvement up to work that he did with Skip Johnson, pitching coach with the University of Texas:

"So I went for one bullpen (session) and he was telling me try this and try that," said Bailey, who tossed eight scoreless innings Friday, Aug. 28, in beating the Dodgers. "The whole time I&rsq...

Bailey and Bruce

I’ve pretty much given up on the Titanic Struggle Recaps at this point, but last night’s win over the Cardinals was pretty much what all of us have been looking forward to for a few years. Homer Bailey on the mound, going 7 innings, giving up just one run while striking out 7. Jay Bruce hitting two homers and driving in 5 runs. (That’s not even to mention Joey Votto’s homer.)
These numbers make me happy:
Homer Bailey (since August 23): 4-1 in 7 starts, 1.99 ERA.

The Future: Bailey and Votto

The Reds have had an impressive late kick. From Baseball Prospectus:
The Late Show: Winners of eight out of 10 and 21 out of 31, the Reds continue their attempt to salvage some dignity. Leading the way is Joey Votto, who collects 18 hits and scores 12 runs over that 10-game span while hitting .500/.571/.833. His .321 EqA not only ranks eighth in the league, it’s the highest among any Red with 400 plate appearances since Barry Larkin in 1996. Also making a solid September push is Homer B...

It’s yet another thrill-packed edition of the Redleg Nation Radio podcast.

More on Homer Bailey

This weekend, we had a post on Homer Bailey. He credits the return of his outstanding velocity to a workout with the pitching coach at the University of Texas (Bailey visited him on the advice of his agent, not the Reds). Within three pitches, Bailey’s velocity was back.
The problem was one-hundred percent mechanics, Bailey says.
Many of you had the same reaction: why are the Reds paying pitching coaches if they couldn’t detect this flaw? Isn’t this Dick Pole’s job? Th...

Based on the timing and his recent performances, it really couldn’t have been anyone else.
Not only was Bailey’s next turn for Louisville to be Saturday, he’s been its hottest starter. The 23-year-old is 4-0 with a 0.47 ERA in his last five starts, with three of them lasting at least eight inni...
