ACC notebook: Terps' Petty moves back to linebacker

Shawn Petty was a scout team linebacker for Maryland when last season kicked off. A true freshman, the 6-foot-1, 235-pounder from Greenbelt, Md., was just trying to get into a groove in college and get accustomed to the differences in speed and intensity of the college game.

By November, he was the Terrapins starting quarterback.
Injuries to four other signal callers forced second-year coach Randy Edsall to not only take the redshirt off of Petty, but to move him to his old position in high school.

The Terps lost the four games Petty played, but his numbers werent as bad as one might expect. He completed 39 of his 84 attempts for 500 yards, six touchdowns and only two interceptions. He also ran for a score.

With Marylands quarterback situation improving, as C.J. Brown, Perry Hills and Caleb Rowe are once again healthy, Petty was moved back to linebacker this spring. He is currently listed as the third-team inside linebacker behind junior Cole Farrand and senior Bradley Johnson.

What he had to do is just

Spring lookahead: Maryland Terrapins

2012 record: 4-8 overall, 2-6 ACC
Spring Practice opens: March 2
Spring game date: April 12

2012 in review: The Terps started the season 4-2 and looked like the ACCs biggest positive surprise when their quarterbacks all went down with injuries, eventually forcing coach Randy Edsall to use freshman linebacker Shawn Petty under center. Maryland lost its last six games to destroy the good will it built up with those early season wins. The mood in the program isnt what it should be.

Biggest hole to fill: There is no way Maryland can replace defensive tackle Joe Vellano. He may have been the best at his position in the ACC, and was one of the top DTs in the nation. Hes a true football player to the core. His father played and raised his son to be a stud linemen and he is. Second-team All-ACC as a sophomore, first-team as a junior and an honorable mention All-American, and this past season was all-everything again. He was in on 61 tackles as a senior, 14 for a loss of yardage, had six sacks, intercepted a pass, f

No. 11 Clemson defense tightening up

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables knew he had talented players, even if they hadn't always shown that early on. Now, the Tigers are showing they can play a little defense, too.

No. 11 Clemson put on its best defensive showing of the season, holding Maryland to 180 yards in a 45-10 victory on Saturday. The Tigers (9-1, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) have been fueled all season by a record-setting offense that's scored 45 points a game during its six-game win streak. These days, the high-flying offense is backed up by a defense that seemed a lost cause earlier in the year.

Venables is the first year coordinator brought in to tighten and toughen a group that gave up a bowl-record 70 points in losing to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl. Venables understands the Terrapins (4-6, 2-4) are in an injury-induced free-fall, using linebacker Shawn Petty at quarterback and without star receiver Stefon Diggs because of ankle problems.

Still, there's no hiding that Clemson's finding its defensi

Terps lose 4th straight, 45-10 to No. 10 Clemson

Maryland coach Randy Edsall has the postgame speech down pat, sounding the same note to the Terrapins loss after loss, season-ending injury after injury.

The Terps (4-6, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) dropped their fourth straight game and their second with linebacker Shawn Petty at quarterback due to injuries to four others at the position, falling 45-10 at No. 10 Clemson on Saturday.

This time, Maryland was also without leading tackler Demetrius Hartsfield and star freshman receiver Stefon Diggs.

Petty struggled at moving the offense and Maryland struggled slowing down one of the country's top offenses. Edsall acknowledged the difficulty of keeping his players sharp and invigorated when there's so much going against them this season.

''It's tough,'' Edsall said. ''It's really all about pride. One of the things we talk about all the time is just play every play as hard as you can for 60 minutes and play it like it's the last play you're ever going to play.&

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Orwin Smith ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, and Georgia Tech stymied a Maryland offense led by linebacker-turned-quarterback Shawn Petty in a 33-13 rout Saturday. The Yellow Jackets (4-5, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 20-0 at halftime and 27-0 late in the third quarter before Maryland finally scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Petty to Stefon Diggs. Petty also threw a 23-yard TD pass to Diggs on the game's final play, but the injury-depleted Terrapins (4-5, 2-3) dropped their third straight.
Desperate Terrapins Look for Answers at Quaterback Position

Desperate Terrapins Look for Answers at Quaterback PositionIt’s hard to imagine a program that has been hindered by injury more than the University of Maryland.
As the Terrapins get ready to take on Georgia Tech this Saturday, they’ll be preparing with true freshman quarterback Shawn Petty. For those who aren’t familiar with Petty, he’s not exactly known for his stellar arm strength or his pinpoint precision.
He isn’t known for these strengths, though, because he isn’t even a quarterback. He’s one of the team’s linebackers.
The Terrapins have been absolutely devastated at the quarterback position starting in the offseason when senior C.J. Brown tore his ACL. Then on October 20th, against North Carolina State, quarterbacks Perry Hills and Devin Burns both suffered injuries. As if matters couldn’t get any worse, freshman quarterback Caleb Rowe tore his ACL during last week’s game against Boston College, leaving the Terrapins searching for answers at the quarterback position.

After injuries, Maryland forced to start true freshman LINEBACKER at quarterback

Maybe it’s all just karma for the way which he left UConn, but whatever the case, there’s no doubt that Randy Edsall’s time at Maryland has been cursed. Beyond a near revolt from the local media after last year’s 2-10 campaign, and beyond any number of high-level players leaving the program via transfer, of the few who’ve stuck around College Park none can seem to stay healthy and on the field.

No place is that more true than at the quarterback position, where entering Saturday’s matchup with Georgia Tech, the Terrapins are left with no choice but to start true freshman Shawn Petty under center.

Only Petty isn’t your traditional true freshman quarterback. Not in the least bit.

That’s because not only has Petty not thrown a pass as a true freshman this year, but well, he wasn’t recruited to play quarterback at all. Petty actually came to College Park to play linebacker.

And Then There Was None, Maryland's Rowe Out For The Year

We've now officially entered unchartered territory as Maryland has lost an unprecedented 4th QB to a season-ending injury. The new QB is rumored to freshman Linebacker, Shawn Petty, who quarterbacked Greenbelt's Eleanor Roosevelt High School last year. If Petty goes down, which at this point you need to prepare for, Brian McMahon a freshman TE who powered little Atholton High School to an 11-1 record last season would step in.

Petty and McMahon are borderline D-I talents at their current positions (LB and TE respectively) let alone at QB. This is would be comical if it didn't involve serious injuries to four young men and an entire University's football season. It's safe to say, that the Terps will be hard-pressed to run an effective offense during any of our remaining games. A win in any of them would be a huge upset. The Terps biggest offensive play will be Stephon Diggs' kickoff returns.

As for our moron game coach, Edsall will officially get a free pass
