Nationals News: 30 Losses Too Many Edition

Nationals News
The Nationals lost their 100th game, but the Nats 'have to make a jump next year,' according to Mike MacDougal. Sort of like the jump to this year, right Mike?
Sean Burnett's thumb injury is still keeping him out of games. Jim Riggleman wants to keep it that way, which is good, because the Nationals don't have anything to compete for. Chico also runs down the Nats' injuries.
Any combination of Nationals losses & Pirates wins t...

Thumb injury a burden for Nationals' Burnett

When Washington Nationals reliever Sean Burnett took a comebacker off his left thumb against the Milwaukee Brewers on Aug. 23, he was settling into a role as one of the team's late-inning fixtures. Burnett had made six of his previous nine appearances with the game tied or the Nationals ahead by three or less, and eight of those nine appearances had come in the seventh inning or later. He was on track to take over at least part of the setup role Joe Beimel vacated when he was traded Jul...

Sean Burnett: Washington’s True Phenom

We’ve all joked about the faults and futility of the Pittsburgh Pirates over the years but, when credit is due, we must award it to those who are deserving.
As you can see in the graphic below, Pittsburgh’s advanced scouting and high-tech futuristic genetic testing are second only to China’s Olympic gymnastics program, and is well ahead of that of any other team in professional sports.
Of course Neal Huntington went on to trade Burnett just as he was learning to tie his own cleats, but Pittsburgh’s loss will be Washington’s gain.
And let’s give credit to Burnett as well. While the baseball world marvels at the 100 mph fastball Stephen Strasburg possesses, let’s remember that it took him nearly 21 years to be...

Jordan Zimmerman's Elbow and the Future Rotation

(by Jeff Bergin) Yesterday, Jordan Zimmermann had Tommy John surgery, and according to players like Sean Burnett, JZ should come back stronger and ready to roll at about a year, barring any other setbacks. The reason that JZ's surgery and more importantly, his recovery is a big deal, is that with JZ coming back and Strasburg now officially within the Nationals control for 6 years, the Nationals could develop one of the best young rotations in baseball.

I don't really even want to talk about this, but I guess I can't ignore, Sean Burnett's comments about the Pirates' rebuilding process:
"It's funny, but Nyjer and I knew this was going to happen," Burnett said last night from Milwaukee, shortly after hearing that the Pirates continued their trading binge by sending away John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny. "They're the laughingstock of baseball right now. They've gotten rid of everybody

Firesale to continue? Pirates exploring trades for Sanchez, LaRoche

In recent weeks, the last place Pirates have already traded away popular centerfielder Nate McLouth to the Braves, and speedy outfielder Nyjer Morgan, backup fielder Eric Hinske and reliever Sean Burnett to the Nationals. And despite some Bucs players (ahem, Jack Wilson) being critical of the front office’s shrewd moves, more might be coming.

Pittsburgh Pirates Live Up to Name, Rob Washington Nationals

Active day for Neal Huntington and company. They send Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett to D.C. for Lastings Milledge and Joel Hanrahan. I'm not sure I understand this from the Nationals perspective. Yes, they need defense, but Morgan is basically Ryan Langerhans - a guy they just valued equal to that of Mike Morse - and they have about a dozen outfielders hanging around already. Burnett is nothing special. His 3.06 ERA is shiny out of a relief role, but his FIP is 4.5, his BABIP against is ...

Walkoff Walk Officially Apologizes to Sean Burnett and Jesse Chavez

Two weeks ago, Mr. Liakos implied that the Pirates players were insane for holding a seance in honor or recently departed teammate Nate McLouth. We got our information from ESPN, normally a bastion of honest reporting and never, ever, ever a source of chicanery in journalism.

Well, it turns out the ESPN folks were dead wrong about the candle, candle burning bright in McLouth's locker, so we'd like to offer up our mea culpa:
