2009 Rule 5 Draft Preview: Right Handed Pitchers

Today we cap off the preview of the upcoming Rule 5 draft. In case you missed the previous versions, I've covered some options at the catcher, middle infield, and outfield positions, as well as left handed pitchers. Today we'll go over some of the right handed pitchers available in next week's draft. For those of you looking for corner infielders, I apologize. I didn't feel it was worth the time to research this info for two reasons:...

Pirates looking at pitching

Several rumors have been flying around, and from the looks of it, the Pirates are heavily focused on adding pitching going in to the 2010 season. Dejan Kovacevic reported that the Pirates are looking at pitching, and aren't focused as much on adding a position player, due to options like Jeff Clement and Jose Tabata in the upper levels of the minors. Here are the players the Pirates are rumored to be interested in:

Possible Rule 5 Pick: George Kontos

I was just reading through the comments on Vlad's excellent post about potential Rule 5 picks, and I got to thinking that one guy the Pirates might actually consider is George Kontos of the Yankees. This isn't a pick I'm necessarily endorsing--I haven't done enough research yet, but the guy I'm most interested in so far is the Rays' Aneury Rodriguez. But I think the Pirates will think hard about Kontos.
You might recall that Kontos was one...

Would another lefty hitter like Hank Blalock, right, be the best fit for the Pirates?

Straight to the point today: one thing I find a bit strange about the idea of the Pirates pursuing Rick Ankiel and/or Hank Blalock is that both those guys are left-handed, whereas most of the Bucs' other options at first base and right field (Garrett J...

Typical--the Bucs didn't get blown out by San Diego tonight, and they weren't even unambiguously bad, but they still ended up on the wrong side when the game ended. The Pirates rallied from a 6-2 deficit to tie the game against Heath Bell in the ninth, and that inning featured an awesome plate appearance by Steve Pearce, who laid off a number of tough breaki...

by Ed PriceFiled under: Mariners, Pirates, MLB Inside Scoop, MLB Trade DeadlineUpdate: The Mariners have obtained shortstop Jack Wilson and right-hander Ian Snell from the Pirates for infielder Ronny Cedeno, Jeff Clement and three other minor-leaguers.The move indicates Seattle is not in "sell" mode, which was indicated Tuesday as FanHouse reported the M's planned to hold on to Jarrod Washburn.Wilson, 31, is an excellent defender who was batting .267 with four homers and 31 RBI....

Clement: Where there's smoke...

Crazy night tonight. I was trying to write the game story on deadline, track down the Jeff Clement rumor and keep up with the blog. And all with a game that ended in the bottom of the ninth, the toughest kind to write. I'm not whining. It's nights like this that make the job fun. Stressful, but fun.
Sorry about the blog shutdown that seemed to happen between 9 and 9:30 -- right when the Clement story broke. I'm told it had to do with maintenance on the site.
At any rate, I've ...

Even When They Improve Themselves, The Mariners Manage To Hurt Themselves

So today, Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien were called up and now they will become free agents following the 2013 season as opposed to 2014. Incredible.
