De La Cruz has a job -- Cliff Floyd not so much

In former Marlins news, the Padres will retain the services of Eulogio De La Cruz but sent Cliff Floyd packing.

The San Diego Padres on Thursday selected the contract of righty Eulogio De La Cruz, and requested unconditional release waivers on righties Cha Seung Baek and Shawn Hill, and outfielder Cliff Floyd.
The 25-year-old De La Cruz made three appearances for the Padres this season and posted a 5.40 ERA. He spent the rest of the year at Triple-A Portland, where he went 2-6...

Should The Rays Bring Back Cliff Floyd?

According to Padres.com, Cliff Floyd, the former Ray known for his clutch hits and being a great guy in the clubhouse in the magical 2008 season, is one of three players that the Padres have waived. That means he is now a free agent. A lot of people give Floyd a lot of credit for [...]

Is Ryan Church getting the Cliff Floyd treatment...

I like Ryan Church, and think he has the potential to be a staple on this team, for years to come. It's hard to find outfielders with great range, an incredible arm, decent speed and a solid bat. Church is also relatively inexpensive, he's still arbitration eligible for the next three years, before he can land a big free agent contract.I've also been one of those who believes, Jerry Manuel has unfairly singled him out and has been ruining his season. Whether it was a personality c...

“You can’t measure the intangibles”

This is a line we often hear. Announcers and fans and even coaches and general managers will say this. I’m not really sure what the intangibles are (they seem to change in order to fit one’s argument) and don’t care as the quote is mostly ridiculous, but Tango had one of the best comments I’ve read in response to this comment:

When people say that you can’t measure the intangibles, remind them that those intangibles are being paid for with tangible dollars. ...

Padres Trying to Trade Ex-Top Pick Matt Bush

Though the Padres always respected former No. 1 pick Matt Bush's ability to throw a strike from shortstop to first base, his conversion to pitcher so far had been a virtual failure, thus complicating the prospect of trading him. Even if the team fails to find someone willing to take him, Bush is ...

BJ Upton wets himself due to lack of hustle

TAMPA BAY, FL — Tampa Bay Rays second baseman had an embarrassing moment Monday when he micterated in his pants in the middle of the fourth inning.
Upton, who has been benched twice this month for lack of hustle, was simply sitting in the clubhouse before the game when he felt the need to urinate.

Close to Gone: Jacque Jones

Talks of Jacque Jones leaving Chicago are on fire of late. It's been no secret the Cubs have had Jones in the front of the garage sale with a "Best Offer Accepted" tag around his neck. The 32 year old lefty outfielder is coming off his best year since 2002, still he's found himself in Lou's doghouse. And it's evident by now that if you are NOT with Lou then you are out of here.

Robbing Peter to Pay Paul (A look at the Cubs Payroll 2007 & Beyond)

Recently I've been rubbing it in my Mariner friend's face that his team has somehow managed to spend around $110MM on their team's salary this year and they are still odds on favorites to finish in the cellar of the AL West. He then brought up that if Seattle spent 110MM in 2007 then the Cubs must have a salary of plus 120MM for their talent this season. As I pointed out to him, that could be nothing but further from the truth, as the Cubs Opening Day salary is slightly less than 100MM, not including signing/preformance bonuses. He was shocked, and he pointed out that you're GM must be robbing Peter to pay Paul, as that is very creative financial structuring. It was a curious statement, and the more digging I've done the more it seems true.

Here's a look at the Cubs 2007 salaries including bonuses:
