Saints’ Roman Harper understands why the team drated Kenny Vaccaro

This upcoming NFL season will be Roman Harper’s 8th of his career. Couple that with the fact that the Saints gave up a NFL record high 7,042 yards last season it came as no surprise when the team drafted safety Kenny Vaccaro in the first round this year. Apparently, it wasn’t a surprise to Harper either. In fact, Harper “welcomes” the competition.
Of course (I welcome the competition). And the biggest thing is, we needed to draft a safety at some point this year. I’m what, Year 8? Malcolm (Jenkins) is in the last year of his deal. It’s part of the business. If you don’t think that’s gonna happen, you’re wrong
With a $5.25 price tag, half of which has been paid out, Harper has to consider himself lucky to still be on the team. If the team decides to keep Harper on for the season, new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will have a nice three man rotation at safety. After a disastrous last year, Saints fans should have some optimism headed into this year.

Saints Nation: Time for Saints to Start Anew at Safety

I've been done with the Malcolm Jenkins/Roman Harper back end experiment for a while and I've made no secret of this. I blame them as much as anyone for how pathetically horrible the Saints were on defense last year. Further, I blame those two players most specifically for the last two postseason exits. Of 88 qualifying graded safeties last year on Pro Football Focus, Harper was 87th and Jenkins was 88th. Yep, that's right, the Saints' starters ranked as the two absolute worst in the entire league last year. If that's not a good enough reason for change, then nothing will convince you.

I like the Kenny Vaccaro pick. When the Saints were on the board at 15 I was heartbroken by Star Lotulelei being picked by the Panthers with the pick before. I know there's some whacky reason why they picked before the Saints, but why are they doing that when they swept the Saints anyway and the teams had the same record? I am so bitter about that. But Star isn't a Sa...

The New Orleans Saints bolster the middle of their secondary add S Kenny Vaccaro

The New Orleans Saints overhaul the back-end of their defense by selecting with the 15th overall pick Kenny Vaccaro the star safety out of Texas. He is an excellent tackler with strong closing speed that head coach Sean Payton loves . One of the best all-around athletes at the position and has the game tape to prove it. Vaccaro, who ran a 4.63 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, could play either safety spot in the NFL. Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins both were completely inconsistent and looked clumsy at times in coverage this past season. Vaccaro will give the team the much needed upgrade at the safety position . As a junior at Texas, Vaccaro emerged as a big-time prospect, posting 82 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, eight passes broken up and two interceptions. Last year as a senior, Vaccaro had a career-high 107 stops, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Oren Shiri is the Creative Director and an analyst at GridironGrit and Founder...

Roman Harper: Let There Be Hope

Instead of focusing my energies on the sad reality that the Saints have under a week to reach a contract deal with quarterback Drew Brees, and that the guy who should be getting them ready for preseason is getting his freak on in the Bahamas, I’ll allow myself to saunter off into a much healthier space. This week, my happy place is moving away from the Big Easy to, of all places, Montgomery, Alabama. That’s where Saints Safety Roman Harper will help make the hurt go away.
Harper is hosting his 3rd annual “Sainted Weekend: Mentoring Youth to Strengthen Families”. The weekend will feature a Kid’s Fun Day, Youth Leadership Dinner, Celebrity Cocktail Reception & Silent Auction and Celebrity Golf Tournament. He’s invited a whole army of NFL players to take part in the events. That means disadvantaged kids, many of whom are from single parent homes, will get a chance to hob nob with the guys they call their idols.
These annual events are put on by the Harper’s Hope 41 Foundation. ...

Roman Harper tweeted DJ made a shout to the “New Orleans bounty hunters”

New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper mentioned on Twitter that a DJ at a club on Saturday night made a special shout out to all of the “New Orleans bounty hunters.”
How cool is this? Last night in a club the DJ shout outs “what up to all my New Orleans Bounty Hunters out there” wow! The life I live
— Roman Harper (@Harp41) June 10, 2012
I’m not sure if the club Harper is referring to is in New Orleans or in another state. But if it’s in the same town as the beloved Saints, that would be pretty disrespectful thing to say by a home town DJ.

Roman Harper: I Didn't Get Paid for "Whacks"

Several New Orleans Saints players have admitted for "whacks," on other NFL players -- and getting paid for them as well. Not Roman Harper. He tells ESPN Radio's Hill & Schlereth: “I did not get any money for it. I don’t understand. A ‘whack’ is just tackle, it’s a legal tackle. And it’s just a term we use for a certain tackle. It’s like, you hit a guy and I guess like you hit him low, below the belt, and his upper body lands before his lower body.”Harper then got a little agitated, saying, “I got nothing. I got nothing. I just play football, man. I didn’t get anything,” Harper said. “Where is all this coming from, anyway? Where did all this happen? Like, I don’t even understand.”Interesting stuff.H/T PFT Josh Dhani is the founder of FootBasket.
New Orleans Saints Week 10 Recap: Saints @Falcons, 26-23 in OT

Well, it was indeed a close one in Atlanta between the Saints and the Falcons with it going into overtime before finally being decided by a FG kick by New Orleans Saints’ K John Kasay 2. The Saints win it 26-23 in overtime to improve to 7-3 with a big lead in the NFC South!

The Saints defense stood up when it counted the most, on 4th and inches at their own 30-yard line, with the Saints’ D-line surging against the Falcons’ O-line to stop Michael Turner well behind the line of scrimmage.
Saints SS Roman Harper 41 gets my game ball for the MVP on defense, while WR Marques Colston 12 gets it on offense for his key catches on third downs and 8 catches for 113 total yards to lead all Saints receivers on the day.

Harper: Fine for hitting Smith was worth it

Saints safety Roman Harper says he does not regret a late hit on Carolina receiver Steve Smith that drew a $15,000 fine from the NFL this week.

Harper says the fine was worth it and that his decision to shove Smith as the receiver slowly crossed the goal line last Sunday was good for his team and got his point across.

Harper had said after Sunday's 30-27 Saints victory that if a player is going to score on the Saints, he's not going allow anyone to just ''walk it in'' the end zone.

Smith says he slowed down not to disrespect anyone, but because he wanted to decelerate comfortably without concerning himself with padded walls surrounding the end zone.

Harper's shove incited a brief scrum between the two teams.

Video: Steve Smith TD, Roman Harper Cheap Shot & Mini Brawl Saints vs. Panthers

Steve Smith is not the guy you want to get into a fight with regardless of your size.
Smith is only 5’9″ but he has laid out teammates and opponents with straight right hands. Great play by Cameron avoiding the rush, better catch by Steve Smith and then the cheap shot by Roman Harper.
The mini Brawl starts and Steve Smith punks Michael Jenkins.
Good times had by all.

Saints, Panthers brawl over late hit

The Cam Newton to Steve Smith connection in Carolina continues to be in good standing. Check out the below video of a 1st quarter TD pass from Cam to Steve Smith which could be their best yet this season. The 5 foot 9 Smith snagged this one out of the air over a defender for a pretty amazing 6 points and 54 yards. Roman Harper came in late with a cheap shot which Steve took exception to, with good reason and the two teams mixed it up in the end zone for a short while. Notice Cam Newton right in the middle of the skirmish.
