All Quiet On The Bosox Front, For Now

Things have been relatively quiet with the Red Sox this offseason, so there hasn't been much to report. One trade, no free agent signings as of yet. But once the first big free agent makes a deal (and that should be around the time of the Winter Meetings next month), things will get cooking.I don't get into all the rumor stuff, as you just don't know who to believe when it comes to that. But the Sox did promote third base coach DeMarlo Hale to bench coach, replacing Brad (not Brian...

Community Projections: Y'all Under Estimated Jacoby Ellsbury

It's not an over statement that the Over The Monster community under estimated what Jacoby Ellsbury would do this season.
Nobody was really that close at all. Only one guess was actually over his batting average this season and the closest guess for stolen bases was still 14 off. Rough.

The categories for Ellsbury were: AB, HR, BA, OBP, SLG and SB. His actual stats:

1. Jacoby Ellsbury- It's time to compare players!
Player A (2009): 606 ABs, 15 HR, 96 R, 68 RBI, 60 SB, .305, .816 OPS
Player B (2009): 624 ABs, 8 HR, 94 R, 60 RBI, 70 SB, .301, .770 OPS
Pretty close, eh? What if I told you that player A will likely be drafted as a top three outfielder in 2010, while player B could be drafted near the third round in drafts....

Jacoby Ellsbury - A Slightly Closer Look

One of the most notable events of the 2009 season was the emergence of Jacoby Ellsbury into a solid leadoff hitter. While Ellsbury is still (and likely never will be) a superstar he seemed to solidify his place at the top of the order less than a year after being benched for the playoffs due to poor performance. With that in mind I wanted to take a look at some areas where Ellsbury did or did not improve and see what that may portend for the future;Plate DisciplineA key for any leadoff hitter ...

The Wonderful Year of Jacoby Ellsbury

Jacoby Ellsbury is having just about the type of offensive year that most projection systems expected him to have. His slash line of .304/.356/.423 is just about what ZIPS, James, and company had him for coming into the year. Yet, somehow, I’m very happily surprised at his success. Perhaps it was his mediocre start to the year or his stellar 63/10 SB/CS ratio. But whatever it is, he’s been a lot of fun to watch.

What is baffling about this year is how horrible Fangraphs’ ...

Thank You Sir May I Have Another

I can only hope that, after last night's win in the Helldome, Hideki Okajima and Paps took Jacoby Ellsbury out on the town for prime rib and hookers. Because the young man's otherwordly snag of a sinking pop fly with one out and the bases loaded and the Sox clinging to a 7-4 lead, was a game-saving thing of awkward beauty. Watching the replays, I still can't comprehend exactly how he ended up with the ball in his hands when all was said and done. But I know that if it got by him, ...

Jacoby Ellsbury Makes His Mark

Jacoby Ellsbury has made Beantown history this evening, becoming the first Boston Red Sox player ever to steal 55 bases in a single season. The centerfielder doubled and stole third in the first inning against the Chicago White Sox to pass Tommy Harper, who snagged 54 bags back in 1973. This should come as no surprise, since Ellsbury swiped 50 bases last season, when he was still a big league baby.Let us not forget he was also responsible for giving everyone in the country a free taco during t...
