Dontez Ford Shows Pitt Inching into ACC

When Pitt formally announced the early signings of Soto, Orndoff, Chapman and Jarrett to the football program, there was a curious fifth.
In addition to the freshmen enrollees, Chryst announced that redshirt freshman Dontez Ford, a native of McKees Rocks, Pa., and graduate of Sto-Rox High, has transferred to Pitt from Syracuse. Ford will work at wide receiver this spring.
Ford had made it known he was transferring before Doug Marrone took the Buffalo Bills job, so the two are unrelated.
Now, in the Big East transfers between conference schools is prohibited. So, what gives?
ACC rules.

The ACC allows in-conference transfers. The restriction is that for the first year, the player has to be a walk-on. Dontez Ford will be classified as a walk-on this coming season as he sits out per the regular transfer rules. Now that the season is over, Pitt football gets to follow ACC rules rather than the Big East’s. One step closer.
Ford redshirted at Syracuse, and worked on the defensive side as a safety, but is now movi

JuCo Junction: Syracuse Adding Slew of Players to Compete in ACC ASAP

Doug Marrone has been grabbing JuCo prospects like he’s holiday shopping. Syracuse has brought in over a number of junior college athletes over the last few weeks. Two-star MLB Luke Arciniega committed yesterday after a terrific visit on the Hill last weekend, making it five pledges in the last ten days for the Orange. The last commitment before this recent fantastic group was Augustus Edwards… five months ago.
Arciniega’s commitment makes it 13 for this class, with six being junior college transfers. Whether the class abides by Greg Adkins’ 16 recruit cap, at least a third of it will be JuCos. This isn’t a bad thing, and it says Marrone is serious about winning in the ACC. Not in a few years, but right now. The Orange is trying to avoid that 4-5 win “get-your-feet-wet” season. If you bring in the size and athletic maturity Marrone has nabbed over the last few weeks, it shows SU wants a successful ACC debut.
This class was going to be small anyway. SU will probably be in the high te...

Why Did Dontez Ford Leave Syracuse & How Will Marrone Fix Safety Depth?

Rumors had swirled late last week that Syracuse freshman safety Dontez Ford would transfer, and the school has made it official. The Fizz tried to contact him on the decision, but he’s not speaking publicly right now. He tweeted:
“Not answering any questions about transferring, especially over twitter. If you got my number, text me, maybe I’ll respond. *shrugs*”
The Fizz did indeed reach out via text, but he did not respond. Sounds like he might be getting some heat from Orange Nation. He tweeted:
“Someone said they thought I was a good kid… So I’m not a good kid because I didn’t want to go to your school?”
This tweet wasn’t specifically addressed at anyone, nor was it part of a Twitter conversation. It’s probably just a response to a disappointed fan, and not targeted at the coaching staff. Doug Marrone’s crew has a very strong reputation, so that’s highly doubtful anyway. Scout.com’s Pittsburgh affiliate told CuseNation.com’s Mike McAllister that people inside the Pitt program

Safety Shu Mungwa Walks, Can Syracuse Fix the Questionable Secondary?

With less than two weeks until kickoff of Syracuse’s season opener, the Orange still isn’t firm on who will start at free safety. Shu Mungwa was a top candidate to wear Phillip Thomas’ old shoes and play opposite Shamarko Thomas this year, but it appears Mungwa is one of three players not on the 2012 roster published in the media guide earlier this month.
Also missing from the roster is nose tackle Cory Boatman and walk-on kicker Riley Dixon. Boatman was a 5th year senior who played in 12 games last year, starting one. Dixon did not see the field at all.
Mungwa, however, was a promising safety coming off a year of being injured who The Fizz thought may fill the open gap at free safety position. Now, the SU Football Office simply states he’s “no longer with the football program.” Per usual, Marrone won’t comment on a player not on the roster, nor why the up-and-coming zone defender split ways with the Orange.
Scout’s John Garcia caught up with Mungwa who simply said, ”It wasn’t the righ
