Syracuse wraps up spring; Hunt tops the QBs

After watching his first spring football game as a rookie head coach, Syracuse's Scott Shafer wasn't about to ruffle any feathers after just 15 practices.

''I thought there was some good effort out there,'' Shafer said Saturday after his White team easily handled the Blue team 27-7. ''We've got a lot of things to clean up. I liked the effort by the kids. I'm looking forward to seeing the videotape.''

There was a normal turnout - a modest crowd of 3,822 - to watch the scrimmage in the Carrier Dome on a day that started with a windblown snow shower, and most eyes were on the quarterbacks as Shafer and his staff try to figure out who will replace record-setting Ryan Nassib in the fall.

On this day, the squad led by junior Terrel Hunt ruled. Hunt was 19 of 29 for 209 yards and two scores, hitting Jarrod West in stride for a 49-yard TD, and generally was the most effective, ahead of fifth-year senior Charley Loeb (3 of 8 for 9 yards) and senior John Kinder (8 of 1

Why Did Dontez Ford Leave Syracuse & How Will Marrone Fix Safety Depth?

Rumors had swirled late last week that Syracuse freshman safety Dontez Ford would transfer, and the school has made it official. The Fizz tried to contact him on the decision, but he’s not speaking publicly right now. He tweeted:
“Not answering any questions about transferring, especially over twitter. If you got my number, text me, maybe I’ll respond. *shrugs*”
The Fizz did indeed reach out via text, but he did not respond. Sounds like he might be getting some heat from Orange Nation. He tweeted:
“Someone said they thought I was a good kid… So I’m not a good kid because I didn’t want to go to your school?”
This tweet wasn’t specifically addressed at anyone, nor was it part of a Twitter conversation. It’s probably just a response to a disappointed fan, and not targeted at the coaching staff. Doug Marrone’s crew has a very strong reputation, so that’s highly doubtful anyway. Scout.com’s Pittsburgh affiliate told CuseNation.com’s Mike McAllister that people inside the Pitt program

Syracuse’s Fantastic Five: The Top 5 Orange Targets Left for NSD 2013

247 Sports/Rivals
Less than three months until National Signing Day 2013, and Syracuse hasn’t picked up a commitment since July. News will start to heat up now that high school seasons are coming to a close, so The Fizz has compiled the top 5 available recruits for SU. It features a lot of size and athleticism, popular traits of Doug Marrone’s targets. The Orange is playing its best football of the season at an opportune time, but there are plenty of needs to fill on the roster.
Here’s our top 5 Class of 2013:
5. DT Rakim Peters
3-star 6’3”, 230 lbs Winder, GA (Apalachee HS)
The Georgia D-Lineman has spent his senior year focused on a state championship. Peters told The Fizz over the summer he wouldn’t focus on the recruiting noise until after the season because of how dedicated he was to the task at hand. Although the Wildcats finished 5-5, Rakim still had a splendid season. He’s a superb pass rusher and his top schools include Syracus

Fearless Five: The Fizz’s Predictions for Syracuse’s 2012 Football Season

With the football opener against Northwestern just 48 hours away, here are five predictions for the upcoming season.

Prince-Tyson Gulley will become king of the running backs

Gulley tragically broke his collarbone immediately following a career game against Toledo last season in which he carried the ball 10 times for 66 yards. If he had stayed healthy, he may have competed with Antwon Bailey for the starting job by the time 2011 drew to its end. He was the best all-around back on the team last year, and is again this year.
Kudos to Jerome Smith for having an excellent offseason and earning praise from his teammates and coaches for the strides he’s taken, but he still doesn’t have the big-play ability of Gulley. By the end of Week 3, Gulley’s playmaking will be impossible to ignore, and he’ll have won the lion’s share of the carries along with the starting job. Smith will be able to serve as a bruising change of pace and short yardage back.

Marcus Sales will be inconsistent

Syracuse Football’s Top 5 Questions Heading into Next Week’s Season Opener

B/R
What are the 5 most important questions facing Syracuse football? Just over a week away before the floodgates open to the Carrier Dome and the season kicks off. Doug Marrone and his squad have prepared for a bounce-back season after ending last year’s with a 5-game debacle. One definite fallout from the losing skid was training camp at Fort Drum in Jefferson County. Injuries and position battles have kept SU on its toes this pre-season, and heading into year four Marrone feels pressure to produce a winning season. Perhaps his grumpy mood at Big East Media Day just speaks to his focus on the upcoming challenges ahead.
All of the hype for the season even has Darryl Gross anxious. He says that he has the utmost trust in The Dougie.
“I want you to know we have complete confidence in Doug Marrone’s leadership and vision. He knows what we need to have success and we are getting closer. Have we had challenges? Of course. Will we have more challenges? Yes, it’s part of the deal. Will we...
